Survivorship and fecundity of Culex pipiens pallens feeding on flowering plants and seed pods with differential preferences.

Adult mosquitoes rely on ingestion of sugar from plants to survive, swarm and mate. Culex pipiens pallens Coguillett is the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis and epidemic encephalitis. Little is known about the effect of feeding on different sugar sources on the survivorship and fecundity of Cx. pipiens pallens. In the present study, newly emerged mosquitoes were exposed to several flowering plant and seed pod species with different olfactory preferences, and the survival times of mosquitoes exposed to these sugar sources were determined. The proportions of mosquitoes that ingested sugar

Morphogenesis, Flowering, and Gene Expression of Dendranthema grandiflorum in Response to Shift in Light Quality of Night Interruption.

The impact of shifts in the spectral quality of light on morphogenesis, flowering, and photoperiodic gene expression during exposure to light quality of night interruption (NI) was investigated in Dendranthema grandiflorum. The circadian rhythms of plants grown in a closed walk-in growth chamber were interrupted at night for a total of 4 h, using light-emitting diodes with an intensity of 10 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPF. The light quality of the NI was shifted from one wavelength to another after the first 2 h. Light treatments consisting of all possible pairings of blue (B), red (R), far-red (Fr), and wh

Comparison of direct and indirect sampling methods for tarnished plant bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) in flowering cotton.

A complex of hemipterans, especially the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) (Hemiptera: Miridae), has become a major target of insecticides in flowering cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., in the mid-southern United States. Sampling protocols for this complex during this period of cotton development are poorly established, resulting in uncertainty about when infestations warrant treatment. Nine direct and indirect sampling methods were evaluated for bias, precision, and efficiency in cotton throughout the Mid-South during 2005 and 2006. The tarnished plant bug represented 9

Spasmolytic effect of aqueous extract of Tagetes erecta L. flowers is mediated through calcium channel blockade on the guinea-pig ileum.

This study provides pharmacological evidence on the spasmolytic activity of Tagetes erecta L. (marigold or cempasúchil) on the guinea-pig ileum and presents data on its mechanism of action. The relaxant effect on KCl contractions was more marked with aqueous (AqEx) than with ethanol extracts (EtEx) of T. erecta flowers (55.6 ± 11.0 vs 21.1 ± 4.4%, respectively). In addition, the aqueous extract antagonized contractions elicited by EFS, but not by acetylcholine (73.5 ± 1.9 vs 14.5 ± 5.3%, respectively). These effects were not diminished by hexamethonium or L-NAME, but this extract caused a righ…

Anti-biofilm activity of essential oils from Salvia abrotanoides leaves and flowers against extensively drug-resistant and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a formidable nosocomial pathogen whose biofilm production is a key contributor to its multidrug resistance. This study reveals the significant antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of Salvia abrotanoides essential oils (EOs) against MDR and XDR A. baumannii. GC-MS analysis identified 19 novel compounds within the leaf (L-EO) and flower (F-EO) extracts. F-EO exhibited greater potency, inhibiting bacterial growth and biofilm formation at 1.75 mg/mL and 0.9 mg/mL, respectively. At sub-inhibitory concentrations, both EOs caused substantial downregulation (>84%) of the

(Hyper)bioaccumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the flowers and pollen of wild plants: a potential pollinator exposure pathway.

Pollinator decline is a well-documented global trend that threatens the stability of both natural and agricultural systems, prompting further investigation into its causes. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are globally detected contaminants known to be toxic to animals, including pollinators, and accumulate in plant tissues from contaminated media. The partitioning of PFAS to flowers and pollen is a major gap in our understanding of the chemicals' fate in terrestrial systems. Thus, we conducted a preliminary survey examining the concentrations of PFAS in the soil, leaves, pollen, and…
