Increased fluorodeoxyglucose-uptake in positron emission tomography with an endobronchial schwannoma occluding the left main stem bronchus.

A 48-year-old woman suffering from left-side back pain and a 3-year history of coughing was found to have a submucosal lesion occluding the left main bronchus by chest computed tomographic scanning and bronchoscopy. The lesion showed a high standardized uptake value of 3.9 in positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 labeled fluorodeoxyglucose scanning (FDG-PET). The tumor was resected with the posterior wall of the left main bronchus through a postrolateral thoracotomy, and a large defect in the membranous portion was reconstructed in the manner of wedge bronchoplasty, preserving the lung

[A case of polymyalgia rheumatica where a complication of large-vessel vasculitis was diagnosed by FDG-PET].

The patient was a 74-year-old female presenting with abrupt onset of fever and proximal muscle pains. She had been diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). On physical examination, there was no tenderness or dilatation of the temporal artery and ocular fundi were normal. 18F-FDG-PET revealed accumulation of FDG in the aorta as well as in the bilateral subclavian arteries, which strongly suggested inflammation of the large blood vessels. Magnetic resonance angiography disclosed stenosis of the bilateral subclavian arteries, which was consistent with angitis. This case was considered to have

Abnormal accumulation of [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose in the aortic wall related to inflammatory changes: three case reports.

We present 3 cases with abnormal accumulation of FDG in the aortic wall. Their clinical manifestations were vague or asymptomatic, and laboratory data were consistent with inflammatory reaction. These 3 patients were diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis, inflammatory aortic aneurysm (IAA), and retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF), respectively. FDG-PET and CT images showed the intense FDG uptake corresponding to the arterial walls and/or the soft tissue density surrounding the artery. It was deduced that FDG was probably taken up by inflammatory cells which infiltrated the arterial walls and/or the soft

Interest of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in the evaluation of vaginal malignant melanoma.

BACKGROUND: This is the first report of FDG-PET findings in a case of vaginal melanoma. CASE: The tumor arose from the anterior wall of the vaginal canal. As the tumor was limited to the vaginal wall and as there was no evidence of distant metastases, the disease was staged as IIC (AJCC 2002). PET-CT images showed two mediastinal foci localized to the left highest mediastinal and subcarinal nodes on fusion PET/CT images. As it was metastatic, the disease was staged IV (AJCC 2002). CONCLUSION: In comparison to conventional imaging, FDG-PET provides a more accurate assessment of the extent of

Detection of atherosclerosis using a novel positron-sensitive probe and 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG).

Inflammation contributes to atherosclerotic plaque remodeling, enlargement and rupture. Non-invasive imaging of coronary artery inflammation could help target therapy to 'vulnerable' atheromata, but is limited because of small tissue mass and arterial motion. Local radiopharmaceutical imaging may overcome some of these limitations. We used a positron-sensitive fiberoptic probe, which can distinguish positron emissions from annihilation photons, to identify diseased from healthy endothelium in an atherosclerotic model. New Zealand White rabbits underwent Fogarty-catheter injury of an iliac arte

The Role of SPECT/CT and PET/CT Hybrid Imaging in the Management of Ectopic Thyroid Carcinoma-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Thyroid ectopy represents a rare disease with an incidence of 0.3-1/100,000. It occurs due to the defective embryological process of the thyroid gland development. The thyroid ectopic tissue may suffer malignant transformation. This review aims to shed light on the roles that I-131 SPECT/CT (radioiodine 131 single-photon emission tomography fused with computed tomography) and F-18 PET/CT (fluorodeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography fused with computer tomography) may play in managing patients with ectopic thyroid carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total num…

Occult mediastinal lymph node metastasis in NSCLC patients diagnosed as clinical N0-1 by preoperative integrated FDG-PET/CT and CT: Risk factors, pattern, and histopathological study.

BACKGROUND: Integrated F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) is widely used for mediastinal lymph node (MLN) staging in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, FDG-PET/CT has certain limitations. Prediction of occult MLN metastasis could allow selection of candidates for preoperative cervical mediastinoscopy or endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration. This study defined risk factors for occult MLN metastasis in patients with NSCLC patients who were diagnosed as clinical N0-1 by preoperative integrated FD

Prognostic significance of pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT in hepatocellular carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) is not routinely recommended for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis or surveillance, and its prognostic role in patients with HCC remains unclear. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the prognostic significance of 18F-FDG PET/CT in HCC. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted until August 2024 to identify studies evaluating the prognostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with HCC. Studies were included if they reported an association between pre-treatment PET/CT a

"Hot Liver" in Hepar Lobatum Carcinomatosum on [ 18 F]FDG PET-CT.

A 54-year-old woman underwent [ 18 F] FDG PET/CT for assessment of a voluminous ascites with an infiltrating lesion on the left breast at clinical examination. PET-CT revealed a large left breast lesion with homolateral axillary lymph nodes and a left iliac lytic bone lesion, but also hepatomegaly with diffuse and extensive uptake with brain and renal hypometabolism. The result suggest an hepar lobatum carcinomatosum with sequestration of the radiotracer in the liver with a reduction of the background physiological activity. This "hot liver aspect" means being cautious about the risk of a fals

18 F-FDG PET/CT in a Patient With Bilateral Perinephric Myxoid Pseudotumor of Fat.

A 62-year-old man with an 18-month history of nephrotic syndrome secondary to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis presented with bilateral perirenal masses. Contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed the large perirenal lesions encasing both kidneys and extending into the renal sinuses, with mild progressive enhancement and no cortical invasion. PET/CT showed a mild to moderate 18 F-FDG avidity. Core needle biopsy of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of perinephric myxoid pseudotumor of fat.

FDG PET/CT in Duodenal Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the duodenum is extremely rare. We describe the contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case of duodenal FDCS. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a large, irregular mass originating from the horizontal portion of the duodenum. The mass demonstrated heterogeneous enhancement, with internal areas of low-attenuation necrosis and coarse calcifications. The mass showed significantly increased FDG uptake. The patient underwent surgical resection, and histopathologic examination revealed a spindle cell tumor positive for CD21 and CD35, confirming the d

Rare Subcutaneous Manifestation of Rosai-Dorfman Disease on FDG PET/CT in an Adolescent.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) most commonly presents as painless, massive cervical lymphadenopathy. In this case, a 17-year-old girl presented with a progressively enlarging, painful mass on her back. Ultrasound revealed subcutaneous soft tissue lesions in the posterior trunk, and FDG PET/CT demonstrated hypermetabolic activity within these lesions as well as in an enlarged left inguinal lymph node. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease. This case underscores the importance of including RDD in the differential diagnosis of atypical subcutaneous masses, part

FDG PET/CT in vascular graft infection: a pictorial review.

Vascular graft infections (VGI) are rare but severe complications following vascular surgery, with significant morbidity and mortality. Diagnosing VGI requires a multidisciplinary approach combining clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings. While CTA remains the first-line imaging modality, its limitations in detecting chronic or low-grade infections highlight the value of advanced nuclear medicine techniques, particularly [18F]FDG PET/CT. In this review, we discuss the role of [18F]FDG PET/CT in diagnosing VGI, emphasizing its high sensitivity and negative predictive value, which are critic

[ 18 F]FDG PET/CT in Primary Angiosarcoma of the Thyroid.

Thyroid angiosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive malignancy, comprising <1% of thyroid cancers. We present the case of a 58-year-old man with symptoms of cervical lymphadenopathy, hemoptysis, and dysphagia. [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT revealed a hypermetabolic, centrally necrotic mass in the thyroid, with extensive metastases to the lungs, mediastinal and cervical lymph nodes, as well as the adrenals. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration identified a spindle-shaped neoplasm, initially suspected as thyroid carcinoma. Histopathologic analysis confirmed poorly differentiated angiosarcoma with s

Role and applications of [18F]FDG PET/CT in the assessment of osteoarticular infection and inflammation - Part II.

[18F]FDG PET/TC is an emerging tool in the evaluation of inflammatory arthropathies, characterised by their insidious course and clinical overlap. It allows detection of subclinical inflammation, assessment of systemic involvement and quantification of metabolic parameters useful in early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. In rheumatoid arthritis, it correlates with clinical indices (Disease Activity Score), serological markers (CRP, anti-citrullinated protein antibodies) and ultrasound findings, and facilitates the identification of complications such as cardiovascular and pulmonary involv

Unsuspected Spondylolysis on FDG PET/CT in a Pediatric Patient With Osteosarcoma.

Lumbar spondylolysis can be asymptomatic but is a common cause of low back pain in adolescent athletes. We report a rare case of focal increased FDG uptake at the left pars interarticularis of L5 vertebra, along with an associated transverse fracture line on 18F-FDG PET/CT, in a 15-year-old boy with newly diagnosed osteosarcoma. This led to the incidental diagnosis of L5 spondylolysis. Attention to CT findings and history-taking is prerequisite to avoid misinterpretation of the FDG PET/CT in this clinical setting.
