Sacral and Ischial Pressure Ulcer Management With Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy With Instillation and Dwell.

BACKGROUND: The addition of topical fluid instillation, a programmable "dwell" time and a novel foam-wound interface to the established wound healing benefits of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) works synergistically to benefit patients with complex wounds. This engineering breakthrough for wound care has been termed NPWT with instillation and dwell (NPWTi-d), and the new foam dressings are reticulated open cell foam dressings specifically designed for use with NPWTi-d. This combined technology has shown promise in chronic, complex wounds and has potential for the management of sacral an

Electrochemical Deoxygenative Thiolation of Preactivated Alcohols and Ketones.

This work describes an electrochemically promoted nickel-catalyzed deoxygenative thiolation of alcohols and ketones under mild conditions. Excellent substrate tolerance and good chemical yields can be achieved by graphene/nickel foam electrodes in an undivided cell. Further study to gain mechanistic insight into this electrochemical cross-coupling has been carried out.

Pathophysiology of native coronary, vein graft, and in-stent atherosclerosis.

Plaque rupture, usually of a precursor lesion known as a 'vulnerable plaque' or 'thin-cap fibroatheroma', is the leading cause of thrombosis … ase to develop. Morphological identifiers of accelerated atherosclerosis include macrophage-derived foam cells, intraplaque haemorrhage, and thin fibrous cap. Foam-cell infiltration can be observed within 1 year of a saphenous vein graft implantation, with subsequent necrotic core formation and rupture ensuing after 7 years in over one-third of patients. Neo …

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis Associated with Essential Thrombocythemia.

A 72-year-old man was admitted for examination of proteinuria (9.14 g/day) and leg edema. Essential thrombocythemia (ET) was diagnosed because of thrombocytosis (platelet count, 57.9×104/μL), elevated megakaryocytes in bone marrow biopsy, and JAK2 V617 mutation. Kidney biopsy led to a diagnosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) cellular variant (characterized by glomerular capillaries filled with swollen endothelial cells containing foam cells) in 6 glomeruli, FSGS tip variant in 5 glomeruli, and additional FSGS variants in other glomeruli. Affected glomeruli had anti-CD61 antibody …

Glycoxidation and lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoprotein can synergistically enhance atherogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the role of glycoxidation and lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in ath … ation of LDL. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that CML and MDA accumulated mainly in macrophage/foam cells, while pyrraline, a non-oxidative product of glycation, and apolipoprotein B were localized in the extracellular matrix in atherosclerotic lesions. Atheromas were positive for CML and MDA, but negative for pyrraline. Macrophage/foam cells in atheros …

Biotransformations of rifamycins: process possibilities.

Rifampicin, an important antibiotic, is manufactured by chemical conversion of rifamycin S which is obtained by the chemical modification of rifamycin B. Rifamycin B is a product of Nocardia mediterranei fermentations. The chemical conversion of rifamycin B to rifamycin S has many disadvantages: Strong acidic conditions are required, heavy foam formation accompanies transformation and the yields are low. This review highlights the developments in alternative, biochemical transformations using enzymes and cells; the main focus is on transformations carried out by rifamycin oxidase.

Closure of large orocutaneous fistulas in end-stage malignant disease.

Expanding Silastic foam was used to close and dress a large orocutaneous salivary fistula secondary to a massive local recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma. The technique is simple, rapid, and effective. The patient found the dressing superior in every way to the traditional absorbent dressings previously supplied. We recommend this technique for the closure of large defects in the head and neck.

Toll-like receptor 4 signaling links cytoskeletal remodeling to lipid accumulation in macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Macrophage lipid accumulation is a hallmark of atherosclerosis and other metabolic diseases. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling and cytoskeletal remodeling have each been implicated in this process, yet the mechanistic connections among these three elements remain incompletely defined. MAIN BODY: This review synthesizes current evidence for pathways in which TLR4 activation, via bifurcated signaling through MyD88/TRAM, SYK/Src, and integrins, engages small GTPases (Rac, Cdc42, Rho) and downstream effectors including cofilin and paxillin to drive cytoskeletal remodeling. These c

Biomimetic Macrophages Inhibit Atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- Mice through Inducing Macrophages Autophagy.

Inflammation is an outstanding of countless deadly diseases such as atherosclerosis, triggered by chronic inflammation within the artery walls, which underlie a range of critical cardiovascular diseases. There is considerable evidence that defective autophagy and excessive production of reactive oxygen species are closely involved in the initiation and development of atherosclerosis. Reactive oxygen species-initiated autophagy dysfunction induces conspicuous cell apoptosis and causes the increase of foam macrophages. The treatment of atherosclerosis is majorly aimed at decreasing the cholester

[Cytological changes in breast carcinoma in situ].

Certain preinvasive stages precede invasive carcinoma of the breast. Our knowledge about diagnostics, development and prognosis of such preinvasive forms is poor, for it is not possible to observe them directly and continuously. Analysis of the fine needle aspirates of carcinomata in situ of the breast show suspicious apocrine metaplastic cells with nucleoli in 92% and foam cells in 75%, being in contrast to cytological findings on benign lesions. Those peculiarities are more obvious with CLIS than with intraductal CIS lesions. They can be interpreted as particular signs of increased cell prol…

Sirt6 deletion in bone marrow-derived cells increases atherosclerosis - Central role of macrophage scavenger receptor 1.

AIMS: Sirtuin 6 (Sirt6) is a NAD+-dependent deacetylase that plays a key role in DNA repair, inflammation and lipid regulation. Sirt6-null mice show severe metabolic defects and accelerated aging. Macrophage-foam cell formation via scavenger receptors is a key step in atherogenesis. We determined the effects of bone marrow-restricted Sirt6 deletion on foam cell formation and atherogenesis using a mouse model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sirt6 deletion in bone marrow-derived cells increased aortic plaques, lipid content and macrophage numbers in recipient Apoe-/- mice fed a high-cholesterol diet for

Macrophage-Specific Expression of IL-37 in Hyperlipidemic Mice Attenuates Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis, the progressive buildup of plaque within arterial blood vessels, can lead to fatal downstream events, such as heart attack or stroke. A key event contributing to the development of atherosclerosis is the infiltration of monocytes and its associated inflammation, as well as the formation of lipid-laden macrophage foam cells within the vessel wall. IL-37 is recognized as an important anti-inflammatory cytokine expressed especially by immune cells. This study was undertaken to elucidate the role of macrophage-expressed IL-37 in reducing the production and effects of proinflammato…

Homeostatic pressure of a proliferating multicellular foam with hydromechanical volume regulation.

The dynamics of tumor growth and its competition with host tissue depend not only on proliferation rates but also on the mechanical properties of individual cells. Here, we present a hydromechanical model that couples osmotic volume regulation to tissue mechanics, representing multicellular aggregates as a proliferating foam of interacting cells. In confined conditions, we simulate multicellular growth until reaching a hydromechanical steady-state with a compressive multicellular stress. Next, we show that both increased adhesive tension and reduced surface tension increase the homeostatic pre

Cellulose Nanocrystals as Nucleating Agents in Lignin-Based Rigid Polyurethane Foams.

This study investigates the incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) into rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) derived from lignin polyol. CNC promoted cellular refinement consistent with a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism, reducing average cell size by up to 18% and improving cellular uniformity, particularly at 0.2% and 0.4% concentrations. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed hydrogen bonding between CNC hydroxyl groups and the polyurethane matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a shift in the temperature at 10% mass loss from 272 °C (control) to 282-285 °C (0.2-0

A novel therapeutic strategy for atherosclerosis: autophagy-dependent cholesterol efflux.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by abnormal lipid metabolism. Foam cell formation is also known as an early event of AS. Cholesterol efflux is a process whereby cholesterol is excreted from foam cells through transporters, which serves as one of the effective regulatory mechanisms to prevent AS. Autophagy is a biodegradable mechanism, and lipophagy is a special form of autophagy that selectively degrades lipids. Cholesterol efflux is regulated by several mechanisms. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that autophagy is also process whereby cholesterol eff…
