Nanozyme-based biosensing strategies for aflatoxin detection: Recent advances and perspectives.

Aflatoxins (AFs) are among the most toxic mycotoxins, with a profound impact on food safety and health. Consequently, trace-level detection is required, as exemplified by 2 μg/kg for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in cereals under European Union guidelines. Although traditional chromatography and immunoassay-based detection methods are reliable, they are often time-consuming and require specialized expertise. Nanozyme-based biosensors have attracted increasing attention because nanozymes provide stable, engineerable, enzyme-mimicking catalytic amplification. In this article, we introduce major AFs, diffe

Microplastics in poultry: Sources, bioaccumulation and human health consequences.

The widespread use and environmental persistence of plastics have led to growing concerns about microplastic (MP) contamination across food systems including poultry production. This review summarizes current knowledge on the sources, pathways of transmission and impacts of MPs in poultry, highlighting their potential risks to animal and human health. Poultry are highly exposed to MPs through contaminated feed ingredients, drinking water, litter and the surrounding environment. Plastic residues from feed packaging, degraded farm equipment and atmospheric deposition contribute further to contam

Natural occurrence of ustiloxin A and D in rice in China.

Rice, a staple food for more than half of the global population, undergoes multiple processing stages-such as harvesting, dehulling, milling, and polishing-before it reaches consumers. However, these processes not only alter the physical and nutritional characteristics of rice but may also affect the distribution and concentration of contaminants, thereby posing potential safety and quality risks. In this study, a total of 231 unhusked rice samples were collected from three provinces(Jiangsu, Anhui, and Fujian)in China between 2016 and 2018, along with 11 white rice samples purchased from supe

A Systematic Review of Spectroscopic Techniques for Detecting Milk Adulteration.

Milk adulteration is a crucial worldwide concern that endangers food safety and public health, as it involves the deliberate tampering with milk by adding foreign substances or removing essential nutrients, often to boost profits or hinder microbial growth. Traditional detection methods frequently lack the sensitivity and speed required to identify adulterants within milk's complex matrix. This systematic review critically examines the application of spectroscopic techniques for detecting milk adulteration, focusing on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy, Raman Spectro

Systematic Approach to Reducing Errors in Deoxynivalenol Quantification: Insights from Bulk Wheat Sampling and Sample Preparation.

Accurate quantification of Deoxynovalienol (DON) in wheat is critical for food safety, but current methods suffer from poor reproducibility due to inconsistent operational parameters across the sampling and analysis workflow. To address this issue, this study focused on truck-loaded bulk wheat and conducted a comprehensive analysis covering the entire process from sampling to laboratory testing. By examining parameters at each stage-test portion, laboratory sample, composite sample, and primary sample-and applying the Monte Carlo simple random sampling principle, the variability associated wit

The German Metabolite Project - A Review.

New complex residue definitions for plant protection products are constantly being defined by the European Commission. In terms of consumer protection, the maximum residue levels of these definitions must be monitored. However, many complex residue definitions have not been fully covered during monitoring. The main challenges for the official control laboratories are the identification of "relevant" metabolites, the availability of analytical reference standards with defined purity for specific metabolites, and the lack of method information. Therefore, the German government control laboratori

Optimized methods for the investigation of changes in levels of pesticide residues and their transformation products in iceberg lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce is one of the most consumed leafy vegetables, which is often treated by different pesticides against pests and diseases. The aim of this study was to describe the fate of 25 pesticides (16 fungicides, 7 insecticides and 2 herbicides) based on quantitative analysis of the parent compounds and targeted screening of their (bio)transformation products. Mathematical models describing a decrease in pesticide residue levels were proposed for 24 pesticides using a first-order kinetic equation. These models provide the data needed to predict consumer exposure associated with the consump

State of the art: Lateral flow assays toward the point-of-care foodborne pathogenic bacteria detection in food samples.

Diverse chemicals and some physical phenomena recently introduced in nanotechnology have enabled scientists to develop useful devices in the field of food sciences. Concerning such developments, detecting foodborne pathogenic bacteria is now an important issue. These kinds of bacteria species have demonstrated severe health effects after consuming foods and high mortality related to acute cases. The most leading path of intoxication and infection has been through food matrices. Hence, quick recognition of foodborne bacteria agents at low concentrations has been required in current diagnostics.

Botulism as a food poisoning: what is it?

Botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening neuroparalytic syndrome resulting from the action of a neurotoxin elaborated by the microorganism Clostridium botulinum. This disease has a lengthy history; the first investigation of botulism occurred in the 1820s with a case report on hundreds of patients with "sausage poisoning" in a southern German town. Several decades later in Belgium, the association was demonstrated between a neuromuscular paralysis and ham infected by a spore forming bacillus that was isolated from the ham. The organism was named Bacillus botulinus after the Latin wo

Toxic epidemics caused by alimentary exposure to pesticides: a review.

Toxic epidemics have become a serious problem during the twentieth century, due mainly to the huge expansion over the last 50 years of the chemical industry, which has placed tens of thousands of new synthetic organic compounds in the human environment. In the particular case of chemical pesticides, their undiscriminating, widespread use, and harmful potential has been demonstrated by the epidemics generated by accidental contamination by pesticides of foods consumed by man, resulting in high mortality and morbidity rates. We have analysed the main characteristics of 63 outbreaks of toxicity c

Toward safer plant-based foods: Fluorometric identification of red 3 in bacon alternatives.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has revoked approval for Red 3 in food products, requiring reformulation by January 2027. To support compliance, this study introduces a rapid, efficient fluorometric method for detecting Red 3 in food samples. The procedure involves sonication with methanol, followed by direct fluorometric analysis at Red 3's peak emission wavelength (553 nm). Detection and quantitation limits reach parts-per-billion levels using either excitation at 534 nm or synchronous excitation with a 19 nm offset. The full process takes 30 min and uses 25 mL of solvent per sample. I
