Predictors of obesity in Latino children: acculturation as a moderator of the relationship between food insecurity and body mass index percentile.

As Latino children acculturate to the United States, they are at risk for excess weight gain. Existing literature suggests that higher levels of food insecurity may predict obesity, but the role of acculturation is not well understood. Latino children ages 2-17 of both immigrant and non-immigrant parents (n = 63) were recruited from a primary care clinic serving low income families. Child anthropometric measures, and parent acculturation and food insecurity measures were collected via self-administered questionnaires. Over 63% of the patients were either overweight or obese according to criter…

Child-specific food insecurity and overweight are not associated in a sample of 10- to 15-year-old low-income youth.

In the United States, 17% of children and adolescents are overweight and 20% live in a food insecure household. Previous studies examining the association between household food insecurity and overweight among children have been inconclusive but are limited insofar as they did not assess child-specific measures of food insecurity and overweight. In response, this study examined the association between food insecurity and child overweight status when these variables were measured for the same child using information on children (n = 1031) aged 10-15 y from the Three-City Study. Approximately 8%…

Rationale and design of a randomized study of short-term food and cash assistance to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy among food insecure HIV-infected adults in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is an important barrier to retention in care and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people living with HIV infection (PLHIV). However, there is a lack of rigorous evidence about how to improve food security and HIV-related clinical outcomes. To address this gap, this randomized trial will evaluate three delivery models for short-term food and nutrition support for food insecure PLHIV in Shinyanga, Tanzania: nutrition assessment and counseling (NAC) alone, NAC plus food assistance, and NAC plus cash transfers. METHODS/DESIGN: At three HIV care and treat…

Water, food, and mental well-being: Associations between drinking water source, household water and food insecurity, and mental well-being of low-income pregnant women in urban Mozambique.

Drinking water access and water and food insecurity have been linked to mental well-being, but few studies have comprehensively assessed potential pathways linking these associations. Understanding these mediation pathways is particularly important among pregnant women, as prenatal stress and poor mental well-being have been shown to negatively impact fetal development. In this study, we address this gap by analyzing the relationships between drinking water source and water and food insecurity with mental well-being amongst pregnant women living in low-income, urban neighborhoods of Beira, Moz…

Interconnected effects of witnessing household violence, food insecurity, and mental health among peri-urban Cape Town youth: A mediation analysis.

Background: In sub-Saharan Africa, young people face high burdens of food insecurity and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), both linked to poor mental health. Objective: This study tested whether food insecurity predicts common mental disorders through household SGBV, and conversely, whether SGBV predicts common mental disorders through food insecurity.Method: Data were drawn from 534 participants aged 13 to 25 years in the longitudinal Bidirectional, Upbeat communication and Differentiated Distanced care for Young people (BUDDY) cohort study in Cape Town (2021-2022), surveyed at baseline…

MISAPSY: childhood maltreatment, food insecurity, psychological distress and professional integration among socioeconomically disadvantaged young adults - a mixed-methods study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The MISAPSY study (Childhood Maltreatment, Food Insecurity, Psychological Distress and professional integration among socioeconomically disadvantaged young adults) aims to model the interrelations between child maltreatment, psychological distress and food insecurity, among precarious young adults enrolled in French integration services (Mission Locale). This population is exposed to multiple forms of social and material precarity. While food insecurity constitutes a tangible and increasingly prevalent dimension of precarity, it remains underexplored. By examining food insecurity a…

Associations between mid-life and later-life food insecurity on probable dementia in a national sample of United States adults.

BACKGROUND: Growing research suggests that food insecurity, a condition of not having adequate access to healthy foods, is associated with poor cognition; however, prior studies have been limited to the effects of food insecurity in later life. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the associations of mid-life and later-life food insecurity on probable dementia in a large, prospective cohort study of United States adults. METHODS: Data came from 2051 adults from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the longest running nationally representative household panel survey. Food insecurity was assessed bi…

Parental perspectives concerning gluten-free food insecurity in households with children with coeliac disease: take away messages for policy makers.

Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease resulting in lifelong intolerance to gluten. Treatment of CD is a gluten-free diet (GFD). High gluten-free (GF) food costs contribute to GF-food insecurity (GF-FI) in households with children with CD. The study objective was to describe parental perceptions of the barriers/facilitators of GF-food security (GF-FS) and the health policies parents deem necessary to combat GF-FI. A subset analysis of a cross-sectional study examining household and child socio-demographic, child diet quality and GFD adherence, food environment, and GF-FI in parent-child…

Mediating pathways between area-level deprivation and hypertension in Nepal: the role of nutritional status, food insecurity, and health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major contributor to global disease burden, and the prevalence is associated to various social determinants, including area-level deprivation. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study explores how household food insecurity, individual behaviors (smoking and alcohol use), and nutritional status may mediate the relationship between area-level deprivation and hypertension in Nepal. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health S…

Older People in Emergencies; Addressing Food Insecurity, Health Status and Quality of Life: Evaluating the "365+ Days of Care" Program.

During emergencies, older adults stand among the most vulnerable, facing long-lasting food insecurity and overall health issues. The "365+ Days of Care" food aid program addressed food insecurity and poor quality of life among vulnerable older adults following a devastating wildfire in Greece. Our aim was to evaluate the program's efficiency, using a process evaluation framework and a partial cost-utility analysis. In total, n = 133 wildfire-hit residents (≥65 years) received daily tailored, pre-cooked meals and/or weekly food packages. The study outcomes were assessed from baseline to 12 mont…

Drought exposure and severe mental distress among adolescent girls and young women in Lesotho: the moderating role of food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Climate-related shocks such as drought are increasingly recognised as threats to mental health, yet evidence remains limited on how these stressors affect adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Lesotho. This study examines the association between drought exposure and severe mental distress among AGYW in Lesotho and assesses whether household food insecurity moderates this relationship. METHODS: We analysed nationally representative cross-sectional data from 7,101 AGYW aged 13–24 years drawn from the 2018 Lesotho Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. Severe mental distress…

Cross-Lagged Dyadic Associations of Food Insecurity and Depressive Symptoms among Couples Living with HIV and Cardiometabolic Disorders in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity is an important social determinant of mental health, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and cardiometabolic outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. Research is limited on how couples managing chronic illness are jointly affected by household food insecurity and depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to investigate whether household food insecurity predicts subsequent depressive symptoms over time among couples living with HIV and cardiometabolic disorders in Malawi. METHODS: We examined longitudinal dyadic data (4 waves) from 250 couples recr…

The associations between household food insecurity and cancer: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies among adults.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a critical social determinant of health that can adversely influence cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship, while a cancer diagnosis with its financial and functional consequences may also increase the risk of HFI. This study aimed to examine the associations between HFI and cancer-related outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search was done in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until July 29, 2025. Eligible studies were observational in adults (≥18 years) evaluating the associations between HFI and cancer outcomes, …

Using global positioning systems to explore food insecurity among older adults living with HIV, with and without criminal justice involvement.

ABSTRACTThis study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of using global positioning systems (GPS) to evaluate food insecurity among older people living with HIV (PLWH), including those with criminal justice involvement. Approximately 25 PLWH participants were recruited via community engagement from September 2023 to January 2024. Bivariate analyses identified demographic characteristics, and chi-square tests investigated the association between arrest/incarceration history and food security. Spatial analysis examined patterns, calculated distances traveled and determined the frequency of…
