Skin, Hair, and Nail Supplements: Marketing and Labeling Concerns.

Background and objective Dietary supplements advertised to "boost collagen" or for "skin, hair, and nail" health are becoming increasingly popular, despite a lack of evidence to support their use. These products are not regulated by the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and hence there is no centralized database listing current products. The goal of this study was to document and examine the labeling and marketing methods of these products. Methods Supplements including the words "glow," "beauty," "skin," "hair," or "nails" on the label were included in the sample. Seven

Fumonisins in plant-origin food and fodder--a review.

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by the Fusarium group of fungi commonly found on crops, mainly on maize. Some data suggest that as much as 25% of world crops may be lost because of mycotoxin contamination. Therefore, researchers in many countries (particularly in those in which relatively large amounts of maize are directly consumed by humans) are concerned with fumonisin levels in plant-origin foodstuffs and feeds available in their local markets. There is no doubt the levels are strongly correlated with the climate conditions prevailing in the region in which the maize was cultivated: the

Fortification strategies to meet micronutrient needs: successes and failures.

Food fortification is likely to have played an important role in the current nutritional health and well-being of populations in industrialized countries. Starting in the early part of the 20th century, fortification was used to target specific health conditions: goitre with iodized salt; rickets with vitamin D-fortified milk; beriberi, pellagra and anaemia with B-vitamins and Fe-enriched cereals; more recently, in the USA, risk of pregnancy affected by neural-tube defects with folic acid-fortified cereals. A relative lack of appropriate centrally-processed food vehicles, less-developed commer

Evaluating a surveillance system: live-bird market surveillance for highly pathogenic avian influenza, a case study.

INTRODUCTION: Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was first reported in poultry in Nigeria in February 2006. The only human case that occurred was linked to contact with poultry in a live bird market (LBM). LBM surveillance was instituted to assess the degree of threat of human exposure to H5N1. The key indicator was detection of H5N1 in LBMs. We evaluated the surveillance system to assess its operations and attributes. METHODS: We used the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated guidelines for evaluating public health surveillance systems. We reviewed and analyzed pass

Occurrence of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto in imported Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) represents a risk for Turkish consumers.

Anisakid larvae are a prevalent food-borne pathogen that has been found in numerous fish species destined for human consumption. The accidental consumption of infected raw or poorly cooked fish may cause gastroenteric diseases and allergies in humans. In spite of the fact that thorough cooking or freezing kills Anisakis worms, this method does not destroy their allergenic capacity. The presence of A. simplex (s.s.) in seafood products may present a health risk for consumers. In Turkey, Atlantic mackerels are marketed as frozen and mainly imported from Norway. The aim of this study was to ident

Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Escherichia coli Isolated from Raw Chicken Meat in a Selected Wet Market in Manila City, Philippines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a leading global public health concern as it resulted in more difficult-to-treat infections and fatalities. In the Philippines, drug-resistant E. coli, including multidrug-resistant (MDR), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant (CP-CR) E. coli, have been isolated from common food animals, increasing the risk of cross-contamination between humans, animals, and the environment. However, there is a lack of data on the distribution of E. coli in chicken meat in public wet markets. T

Fasciolopsiasis: is it a controllable food-borne disease?

Fasciolopsiasis, endemic to the Orient and Southeast Asia, is a snail-transmitted, intestinal, food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by a trematode, Fasciolopsis buski, which also infects farm pigs. Fasciolopsiasis remains a public health problem despite changes in eating habits, alterations in social and agricultural practices, health education, industrialization, and environmental alterations. The disease occurs focally and is most prevalent in school-age children. In foci of parasite transmission, the prevalence of infection in children ranges from 57% in mainland China to 25% in Taiwan and

Quality assessment of Andrographis paniculata products reveals significant labelling inaccuracies and contaminations.

BACKGROUND: Andrographis paniculata products have gained in popularity for the management of respiratory infections since the COVID-19 pandemic. None of these products holds marketing authorisation and all are sold as herbal food supplements. Current herbal food supplement regulations generally do not impose quality assessments prior to commercialisation, such that the quality of herbal food supplements available to consumers is largely unknown. STUDY AIM: To assess the quality, purity and labelling accuracy of A. paniculata-containing products, focusing on andrographolide content (the pharma

FDA drug labeling: rich resources to facilitate precision medicine, drug safety, and regulatory science.

Here, we provide a concise overview of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drug labeling, which details drug products, drug-drug interactions, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and more. Labeling data have been collected over several decades by the FDA and are an important resource for regulatory research and decision making. However, navigating through this data is challenging. To aid such navigation, the FDALabel database was developed, which contains a set of approximately 80000 labeling data. The full-text searching capability of FDALabel and querying based on any combination of specific se

Use of ozone-depleting substances; removal of essential-use designations. Final rule.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is amending its regulation on the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) in self-pressurized containers to remove the essential-use designations for albuterol used in oral pressurized metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). Under the Clean Air Act, FDA, in consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is required to determine whether an FDA-regulated product that releases an ODS is an essential use of the ODS. Two albuterol MDIs that do not use an ODS have been marketed for more than 3 years. FDA has determined that the two non-ODS MDIs will be sat

[Thalidomide once more in the spotlight].

Thalidomide was withdrawn from the market in the early sixties because of major teratogenic effects such as reduction defects of the limbs. Since, however, it has been found to be an effective drug in erythema nodosum leprosum. In the United States it was decided in September 1997 to admit thalidomide to the market for this indication, and in South America it has been available for this indication all the time. Thalidomide is also efficacious in other major disorders (e.g. aphtae and ulcers in aids) or its efficacy is being investigated in clinical trials (e.g. autoimmune diseases, other compl

Herbal Supplements: Precautions and Safe Use.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies herbal preparations as food supplements. New herbal supplements and products are not governed by the strict FDA drug approval process and there is no premarket approval required. The FDA prohibits manufacturers and distributors from marketing adulterated or misbranded products but does not rigorously define safe practices. Scientific evidence related to herbal supplements is limited. Herbal supplements have been associated with adverse reactions and herbal-drug interactions.
