Exophiala jeanselmei causing mycetoma pedis in India.

Exophiala jeanselmei causing mycetoma pedis in a 65-year-old Bengalee businessman was described. The right lower leg and foot were irregularly swollen, firm, painless, non-tender and had many small nodules and sinuses all over the swelling. The lower end of the tibia and bones of the foot were affected. The discharge from the sinuses and nodules contained black brown, soft, vermicular, crescent-shaped to irregular granules, measuring 0.5--2.00 mm and composed mostly of swollen spherical cells, 4-8 micrometer diameter, and a few hyphae, 2.5--3.0 micrometer diameter. The isolate was polymorphic

Severe epidermolysis bullosa simplex phenotype caused by codominant mutations p.Ile377Thr in keratin 14 and p.Gly138Glu in keratin 5.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a rare skin disease usually inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. EBS is resulting from mutations in keratin 5 (KRT5) and keratin 14 (KRT14) genes encoding the keratins 5 and 14 proteins expressed in the keratinocytes of the basal layer of the epidermis. To date, seven pathogenic mutations have been reported to be responsible for EBS in the Canadian population from the province of Quebec: p.Pro25Leu, p.Leu150Pro, p.Met327Thr and p.Arg559X in KRT5; p.Arg125Ser, p.Ile377Thr and p.Ile412Phe in KRT14. Here, we present a novel French-Canadian patient dia

Immunological studies on the relation between tonsil and pustulosis palmaris et plantaris.

In order to clarify the relationship between the tonsils and pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), immunological investigations were performed focusing on keratin and antikeratin antibody. As materials, the tonsils, plantar skins and peripheral blood from the patients with PPP undergoing tonsillectomy were used. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Common keratin polypeptides reacting with monoclonal anti-keratin antibody were found both in the tonsillar epithelium and in the plantar skin. 2) High molecular weight keratin polypeptides were predominant in the tonsillar epithelium of the

Prevalence of skin lesions in turkeys at slaughter.

1. The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate the prevalence of welfare-related cutaneous lesions in turkeys at the end of the rearing period and (ii) to study the correlations between lesions. 2. The percentage of lesions in each flock was determined by observation at the slaughterhouse. Sixty flocks were investigated in 13 slaughterhouses between April and July 2006. 3. All flocks showed a high proportion of turkeys with footpad lesions, with 40·7% of turkey flocks having severe footpad dermatitis. A significant number of feet had swelling of the footpad and deviated toes (60·0% and 21·4% r

Arteriographic pattern of plantar ulcers in lepromatous leprosy--study of 20 cases.

Sixty arteriograms were done in twenty cases of lepromatous leprosy with thirty five plantar ulcers of six months to two years duration. Tortuosity, narrowing and obliteration of vascular lumen was mostly observed. Obliteration of vascular lumen was seen in twenty five percent of cases. Arteriographic findings were directly proportional with age of patient and duration of ulcer. Hyperemia and neovascularisation were seen in active and infected ulcers. Advanced vascular changes were associated with osteolytic changes of the bone along with neurological deficit.
