OBJECTIVE: We report on florid and unusual ophthalmic physical signs in three children where the trauma was caused by seeds from Avena fatua, a grass common in western North America.
DESIGN: Case series and literature review.
SETTING: Three local emergency departments (ED) during the fall of 1998.
PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Three children reporting to an ED with an acutely painful eye from which the foreign body was identified botanically as Avena fatua.
INTERVENTIONS: None.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Symptoms, interventions, duration of problem.

A 40-year-old female patient was referred to the department of Dermatology with subcutaneous nodules and ulcers years after starting with immunotherapy injections (Purethal) for hay fever. The skin reaction appeared to be due to aluminium hydroxide, which is used as an adjuvant to many injections and vaccins. Aluminium hydroxide can cause delayed granulomatous contact dermatitis or foreign body reactions.

We report a case of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) failure presenting initially as a large popliteal cyst without bony destruction in a 66-year-old woman. A foreign body gigantocellular inflammatory reaction against polyethylene wear particles was found on histology. The size of the cyst and the absence of bony destruction can be due to an exclusive early intramuscular granulomatous reaction. Progressive loosening of the femoral component and narrowing of the joint space heralded the TKA failure.

An unusual case of hyaline ring granuloma arising from the connective tissue wall of a residual apical periodontal cyst is reported. Hyaline rings with foreign-body type giant cell inclusions were a significant feature in the histopathologic diagnosis. The lungs of eight drug addicts dying as a consequence of their habit have been examined. All showed the presence of small amounts of talc emboli and five the presence of starch emboli. Gossypiboma and textiloma are terms used to describe tumor-like masses caused by retained gauze or surgical sponges after any operation. It is a rare surgical complication, usually difficult to diagnose due to its variable clinical presentation and nonstandard radiological appearance. We describe here a rare case of orbital gossypiboma in a child after surgical correction of an orbital blowout fracture.

Foreign body response (FBR) is a universal reaction to implanted biomaterial that can affect the function and longevity of the implant. A few studies have attempted to identify targets for treating FBR through the use of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), though the generalizability of these findings from an individual study may be limited. In our study, we perform a meta-analysis of scRNA-seq data from all available FBR mouse studies and integrate these data to identify gene signatures specific to FBR across different models and anatomic locations. Granulomatous interstitial nephritis (NIG) is a rare form of interstitial nephritis that can be related to acute or chronic clinical presentation. We report a case of transverse colon perforation by a fish bone (Grouper) in a toothless-old female. A review of the literature revealed a great variety of foreign bodies which may cause perforations at variable sites of the gastrointestinal tract. Fish bones were responsible for 46% of intestinal perforations in a review of 24 cases collected in 1984.
