Isolated avulsion fracture of the peroneus longus tendon insertion at the base of the first metatarsal without injury of the tarsometatarsal joint is very rare. Similar to most avulsion fractures, this type of injury is caused by strong tension exerted by the peroneus longus tendon. The mechanism leading to this lesion and treatment options are not clearly defined. Several surgical techniques have been advocated for this fracture, including excision of an avulsion fragment and open reduction for internal fixation through the medial aspect of the foot or minimal plantar incision. We have descri

CASE: A 14-year-old male competitive soccer player presented with a history of recurrent right hip pain for 18 months. He was diagnosed with an anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) apophyseal avulsion fracture nonunion with subspinal impingement, which was confirmed by radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The patient underwent surgical fixation and subspinal decompression. He returned to competitive soccer 5 months postoperatively.
CONCLUSION: AIIS apophyseal avulsion fractures occur in adolescent athletes and generally respond to nonoperative treatment. When such

Articular fractures of the base of the 2nd metacarpal involving the extensor carpi radialis longus insertion are unusual and poorly understood. There is no consensus as to how these fractures should be treated. We report the case of a 2nd metacarpal base fracture in a professional basketball player that was treated surgically with open reduction and internal fixation using cannulated screws. The management of this case is compared to similar cases in the literature.

The first reported case describing a spontaneous bilateral avulsion fracture of the tuberositas tibiae in a New Zealand White rabbit is presented. So far in animals, this condition has been only described in dogs and horses. In humans, this condition is also called Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) or syndrome, traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle (ATT) or patellar tendon enthesopathy of the tibial tuberosity respectively. It is mainly seen in young adolescents coinciding with periods of growth spurts. In humans, its pathogenesis is believed to be caused by repetitive tendon/muscle strain

Avulsion fractures of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus are uncommon and must be differentiated from a loose body. The authors present a displaced avulsion fracture of the medial meniscus posterior horn through the intercondylar notch into the anteromedial compartment of the knee, which was treated by arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation using pull-out suture technique.

We report a case of an avulsion fracture (sleeve fracture) of the proximal pole of the patella in an 8 year old boy who fell onto his left knee. After the fracture was diagnosed, the patient under went surgery on the day of the accident. The articular cartilage and the upper fragment were reconstituted and fixed with transosseous sutures. A cast immobilisation in extension was used for 6 weeks and the patient regained full active mobility of the left knee joint after cast removal. A radiograph showed that the fracture had completely united. Diagnosis, pathomechanism and treatment strategies ar

BACKGROUND: Avulsion of the tibial insertion of the posterior cruciate ligament is commonly repaired via open reduction and internal fixation with a screw, Kirschner's wire, and suture. In the case of a major bony fragment, this technique is adequate to achieve rigid fixation. In the case of an avulsion fracture with a small bony fragment, however, it is not uncommon to break the bone fragment during screw fixation. We describe a new technique for fixation of an avulsion fracture with a small bony fragment. The technique uses a double bundles pull-through suture technique that repairs the ante

Avulsion fractures of the ischial tuberosity are often mistaken for sprains or a muscle tears. We present two cases of displaced fractures with a diagnostic delay of eighteen months and two years, respectively. Both cases were treated conservatively and resulted in discomfort on sitting and in one case persistent functional disability. Since early diagnosis is important for a successful treatment, an anteroposterior radiograph of the pelvis is recommended in patients presenting a history and symptoms indicating a lesion in the posterior aspect of the upper thigh. Accumulated experience indicat

Although infrequent, calcaneal tuberosity fractures pose a challenge for surgeons. The treatment goal is to establish stable fixation and restore function of the gastrocnemius-soleus-Achilles tendon complex. Type II fractures, otherwise known as "beak" fractures, are characterized by large avulsion fragments that extend from the posterior calcaneus at the Achilles tendon insertion. Without prompt diagnosis and reduction, these fractures can lead to significant soft tissue damage and severe edema, raising the risk of wound complications and making surgical fixation more difficult. While no wide

In children, most of the avulsion fractures of the anterior cruciate ligament occur at the tibial eminence. However, femoral-sided avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament is a very rare disease. Methods to manage such injuries remain unestablished. We have presented here the case of a 10-year-old boy with a femoral-sided avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament. X-ray and computed tomography scans revealed a free fragment in the knee cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee with a dislocated fragment. With the assistance

A calcaneal tuberosity avulsion fracture constitutes a sub-group of calcaneal fractures and it poses a high risk of soft tissue compromise, necessitating urgent reduction and fixation. This fracture was commonly treated with screw fixation, and fixation failure associated with this method has been reported in the literature. In light of this, we tested and compared the strength of two-screw (2S) versus three-screw (3S) fixations, where the third screw was fixed from the posterior calcaneal tuberosity towards the anterior process in addition to the two parallel screws. Synthetic calcaneum model

Avulsion fracture of the anterior superior iliac crest (ASIC) following autogenous bone grafting for anterior lumbar fusion (ALF) is an extremely rare complication. We describe a very rare case of avulsion fracture of the ASIC following autograft for ALF in a revision surgery for treating lumbar tuberculosis. A 68-year-old woman with lumbar tuberculosis underwent posterior debridement and posterior iliac crest bone graft fusion; however, her lumbar tuberculosis recurred 9 months after surgery. She then underwent a lumbar revision surgery, including removal of the posterior instrumentation and

INTRODUCTION: The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a vital structure in knee biomechanics, and its avulsion fractures present a unique challenge. This prospective cohort study was conducted at Grant Government Medical College and JJ Hospital, Mumbai, aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) utilizing cancellous screws and ethibond suture augmentation for PCL avulsion fractures. PCL avulsion fractures often result from traumatic incidents, such as road traffic accidents, and are associated with complications if left untreated.

Isolated posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fracture from the tibial attachment in children is extremely rare. The initial diagnosis is often missed in clinical practice. The present report describes the outcome in a long-term follow-up case of an 11-year-old boy involved in a motorcycle accident. The lesion was fixed through an open posterior approach with anatomic reduction. The patient has been followed for 4 years, and his final assessment revealed stable painless knee with an excellent functional outcome. The procedure is described and a surgical video outlines the pre-operative c

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a novel technique in which meniscal stitching needle is used as a puller to induct steel wire to secure the tibial eminence avulsion under arthroscopic visualization, and evaluate the clinical results.
METHODS: From 1999 to 2005, fifteen cases of tibial eminence avulsion were treated with this new technique. Lysholm scoring scale system was used to assess knee function before and after surgery. Regular plain anteroposterior and lateral X-ray films were undertaken to detect the bony healing of avulsed fragment.
RESULTS: The operating time could be controlled within 30

Delayed complications occurring several years after the fused avulsion of ischial tuberosity have rarely been reported. We present a patient with overgrowth of the ischial tuberosity who complained of knee pain associated with significant bone and muscle atrophy in the thigh, which occurred 10 years after the ischial injury. Reinforcement exercise of the hamstrings relieved the knee pain. Here, we emphasize that avulsion fractures of the ischial tuberosity can cause persistent disability and that patients with avulsion fracture of the ischial apophysis in the adolescent period should actively

BACKGROUND: The reported incidence of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury ranges from 3 to 23 % of all knee injuries. Several injury patterns of the PCL have been described, including intra-substance, femoral detachment, and tibial avulsion, of which the last two are more common. Displaced PCL avulsion injury from the tibial side requires surgical fixation; however, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the optimal surgical approach for the fixation of these injuries.
PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the outcomes and complications of arthroscop
