The Posterior Table for Primary Reconstruction of Frontal Sinus Fractures.

Frontal fractures can be associated with major facial defects and present, in some cases, a challenge in bone reconstruction. Due to this challenge, this work aims to describe the use of the posterior table of the frontal sinus as a fragment to reconstruct this region. However, this technique is reserved for cases where the posterior table will be removed due to its fracture and is more intact than the anterior table of the frontal sinus.

Nosographic identification and classification of plagiocephaly.

A classification of anterior plagiocephaly is proposed by the authors on the basis of the clinical and radiological findings analyzed in a series of 28 subjects less than 1 year old. Three main patterns of the anomaly have been identified. Type I anterior plagiocephaly is characterized by unilateral flattening of the frontal bone and elevation of the superior orbital ridge without deviation of the nasal pyramid. The vomer and petrous bones maintain a normal position. In type II anterior plagiocephaly, the frontal and orbital anomalies are accompanied by contralateral deviation of the nasal pyr…

Secondary adult encephalocele with abscess formation of calcified frontal sinus mucocele.

INTRODUCTION: Although encephalocele is a rare congenital abnormality, secondary encephalocele is extremely rare and can cause fatal complications. Here, we report a case of secondary encephalocele caused by frontal sinus wall defect due to chronic sinusitis, which was completely removed by cranialization with autologous bone graft. A 50-year-old man with a 10-year history of chronic sinusitis visited our hospital due to suddenly altered mentality characterized by stupor. Computerized tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enlarged left frontal sinus with sinusitis. The

Frontal sinus destruction from allergic eosinophilic fungal rhinosinusitis.

Extensive fungal infections of the paranasal sinuses are most often associated with immunocompromised patients or poorly controlled diabetics. Seldom do young, otherwise healthy patients present with advanced disease destroying bone and compressing the dura and frontal lobe posteriorly. A case of eosinophilic fungal rhinosinusitis which grew Curvularia lunata in culture is reported. Bone destruction can be common as an expanding inflammatory mass pushes and weakens surrounding bone. The destruction of the frontal sinus with the compression of the dura into the anterior cranial fossa of a 26-ye

[Treatment of posttraumatic defects of the paranasal sinuses].

Fractures and deformations of the upper and middle face skeleton account for 16-28% of all facial bones fractures. Frontal and maxillary sinuses suffer most frequently. To repair bone defects of the paranasal sinuses, 79 patients received prosthetic treatment (compound endoprostheses made of spongy titanium nickelide, titanium grid combined with lyophilized human dura mater which isolates periorbital and muscular tissues and prevents their invasion into the cells or pores of the endoprostheses. This ensures mobility of the prostheses. Reconstruction of posttraumatic defects of frontal and maxi

[Frontal sinus osteomas: neuro-ophthalmological complications].

Osteomas are the most frequent benign tumors of the paranasal sinuses. They often grow in the frontal sinus near the nasofrontal duct. They remain frequently asymptomatic and they tend to be an incidental finding on radiographic studies. Rarely, they extend out of the sinus limits. Two cases with neuro-ophthalmological complications are reported and discussed. A 19-year-old female presented with a progressive left visual impairment and orbital bone deformity. A CT-scan revealed a large calcified mass in both frontal sinuses, with left intraorbital and frontobasal extension. A 21-year-old man s

A rare case of hyperostosis frontalis interna in an 86-year-old Japanese female cadaver.

Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) is a condition characterized by abnormal bone outgrowth on the inner surface of the frontal bone. Most HFI cases occur in post-menopausal elderly women. The pathology of HFI development is uncertain. The estimated incidence of HFI ranges from 5 to 12% in Western countries, but few cases have been reported in the Japanese population. Here, we report a case of HFI in an 86-year-old Japanese female cadaver. Macroscopically, the internal surface of the frontal bone exhibited bilateral nodular protrusion with sparing of the midline, while the external surface wa…

Establishment of a Finite Element Model of Normal Nasal Bone and Analysis of Its Biomechanical Characteristics.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Nasal bone is a long, paired series of small bones, which is narrow at the top and broad at the bottom, that forms the base of the nasal dorsum. Together with the nasal part of the frontal bone, the frontal process of the maxilla and the middle plate of the ethmoid bone constitute the bone scaffold of the external nose. In this paper, the DICOM image data file was imported into the Mimics software for 3D reconstruction. At the same time, the Geomagic software was used for relevant image processing, and the finite element software ANSYS was used to establish a finite element model to analyze th…

Frontal Sinus Development and Juvenile Age Estimation.

Assessment of development is an important component of age estimation in juveniles. One area that has not been fully investigated as a possible aging method is the development of the frontal sinus. The frontal sinuses form when the ectocranial table of the frontal bone separates from the endocranial table forming an air pocket in the bone. The endocranial table ceases growth with the brain, while the ectocranial table is displaced anteriorly as the facial bones continue growth. In order to examine growth and the utility of the frontal sinuses for age estimation, 392 radiographs were examined (…

Interfrontal encephalocele: a rare feature of forehead in hydrocephalic myelomeningocele patients. Clinical feature, probable mechanisms, and management.

OBJECTIVE: Myelomeningocele is a complex central nervous system malformation mostly associated with other neural and extraneural anomalies. A rare special feature of the forehead and skull was observed in myelomeningocele. Here, we present several patients with myelomeningocele, severe hydrocephalus, and interfrontal encephalocele accompanied by metopic suture widening and abnormally shaped frontal bones. METHODS: Five children with this feature were enrolled in this series. The age, sex, location of myelomeningocele sac, neurological deficits, hydrocephalus and history of shunt surgery, and …

Metopic suture in fetuses with Apert syndrome at 22-27 weeks of gestation.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the possible association of skull deformity and the development of the cranial sutures in fetuses with Apert syndrome. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound was used to examine the metopic and coronal sutures in seven fetuses with Apert syndrome at 22-27 weeks of gestation. The gap between the frontal bones in the transverse plane of the head at the level of the cavum septi pellucidi was measured and compared to findings in 120 anatomically normal fetuses undergoing routine ultrasound examination at 16-32 weeks. RESULTS: In the normal group, the gap between the fr…

Fibrous dysplasia: findings in a pre-Columbian skull.

An ancient Peruvian specimen (600 to 800 years old) with fibrous dysplasia involving the left frontoethmoidal region is discussed. The skull is that of a woman aged 20 to 30 years exhibiting marked deformity of the left frontal bone, ethmoids, orbit, and nasal wall. Plane radiographs and tomographic views demonstrate a heavily calcified, expanding process in the frontal region and replacement of the ethmoids by less dense osseous tissue. This specimen represents the second reported instance of fibrous dysplasia occurring in the Americas, further documenting the antiquity of the disease on this…

Embryonic Development and Cranial Ossification Sequence in Two Heremites Species (Squamata: Scincidae).

Although embryological studies of squamates have a long history, most groups in this large clade remain poorly studied. One such group is th … the frontal and parietal bones ossify at their lateral edges at stage 37, while in H. vittatus, the frontal bones begin to ossify towards the midline. This suggests that ossification occurs later in H. auratus compared to H. vittatus, indicating a heterochronic pattern in ossification between these species. Additionally, pigmentation on the dorsal side of the …

Application of a Grading System in the Treatment of Frontal Lobe Contusion in High-Altitude Regions.

OBJECTIVE: With the development of frontal contusion, patients may rapidly deteriorate or even die. Experience in the treatment of frontal contusion in high-altitude regions is limited; thus, we explore a grading system for the treatment of frontal lobe contusion. METHODS: A total of 446 patients with frontal contusions in a high-altitude regions were reviewed retrospectively. We combined the patients' computed tomography scans of the head and clinical features for grading. The score determined the treatment and whether the bone flap was removed. If the patient's condition deteriorated, and t

[Triangular skull. Apropos of trigonocephaly].

The authors present 87 patients with trigonocephaly who were operated on. They take an interest in the consequence of the early synostosis of the metopic suture. The metopic suture combine with the sagittal sutural system, but his spot of manifestation is unambiguous. Its manage the dimension of the frontal bone which himself has repercussions on the set of the orbits. Thereby the fronto-orbito-facial dysmorphy has two component parts. One direct with little frontal bone and a thick sutural spot which extend more or less to the bregma and a second indirect with early deformation of the orbits …

Calvarial defect in human anencephaly.

The calvarial defect in human anencephaly has been studied on 21 anencephalic skulls in all of which the defect extended into the vertebral column. Based on the boundaries of the defect, a nomenclature of the anomaly has been proposed that is simpler, more scientific, and more informative than previous ones because it expresses the precise extent of destruction of the cranial vault. In the present study, the defect was "fronto-occipito-vertebral" in in 71.4%, "occipito-vertebral" in 23.8%, and "parieto-occipito-vertebral" in 4.8% of cases. The morphologic details of the cranial bones bounding
