Cottony leak, a soft rot on fruit of cucurbit crops, is a concern for pickling cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Gershwin) growers in South Carolina and other states. Fruit with typical symptoms and signs of cottony leak were sampled from five commercial fields in 2022 and 2023. Climate change is reshaping pest distributions, threatening global fruit production. We present a climate-informed risk assessment for the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi, by integrating its habitat suitability predictions with host crop distributions. Our optimized model identified the mean temperature of the coldest quarter as the primary predictor, highlighting its critical role in P. ulmi overwintering survival.
