Chemical characterization of size-segregated PM from different public transport modes and implications of source specific contribution to public exposure.

To investigate the chemical properties of particulate matter (PM) in different public transport microenvironments in Hong Kong, the coarse (2.5-10 μm) and fine (<2.5 μm) PM samples were collected in three different types of transport modes including Mass Transit Railway (MTR)-Aboveground (AG), MTR Underground (UG), and Bus routes from October 2013 to April 2014. Average PM2.5 concentrations through UG, AG, and Bus routes were 47.9, 86.8, and 43.8 μg m-3, respectively, whereas the coarse PM concentrations were 4-5 folds less. The PM2.5 total metal concentrations of AG route were 2.3 and 3.7 tim

Comparison of High-Efficiency MgO/Na2CO3 and MgO/K2CO3 as Heterogeneous Solid Base Catalysts for Biodiesel Production from Soybean Oil.

As a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, the industrial production of biodiesel urgently requires the development of efficient and recyclable solid base catalysts. In this study, the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance differences between MgO/Na2CO3 and MgO/K2CO3 catalysts were systematically compared using soybean oil as the raw material. By regulating the calcination temperature (500-700 °C), alcohol-to-oil ratio (3:1-24:1), and metal carbonate loading (10-50%), combined with N2 adsorption-desorption, CO2-TPD, XRD, SEM-EDS, and cycling experiments, the regulatory mechanis

Influence of calcium content of biomass-based materials on simultaneous NOx and SO2 reduction.

Pyrolysis products of biomass (bio-oils) have been shown to cause a reduction in NOx emissions when used as reburn fuels in combustion systems. When these bio-oils are processed with lime, calcium is ion-exchanged and the product is called BioLime. BioLime, when introduced into a combustion chamber, pyrolyzes and produces volatile products that reduce NOx emissions through reburn mechanisms. Simultaneously, calcium reacts with SO2 to form calcium sulfate and thus reduces SO2 emissions. This paper reports the characterization of composition and pyrolysis behavior of two BioLime products and the

Turkey's quest to become a regional energy hub: Challenges and opportunities.

Despite its relatively modest domestic energy resources, Turkey plays a central role in the global geopolitics of energy. Situated between energy-rich areas of the Middle East and energy-consuming Europe, it is no surprise that Turkey has become a crucial transit route for fossil fuels, especially natural gas. Furthermore, in recent decades, Turkey's leadership has pursued an ambitious plan to transform the country into a regional energy hub. This vision encompasses Turkey as a place where energy resources are not only transited but also sold and bought by international sellers and buyers. The

Alternative Prosthodontic Therapies: A Multifaceted Approach.

The increasing influence of alternative therapies reflects shifting demands and attitudes in modern society in general. Concerns about the negative impacts and rising expenses of traditional health care are also fueling the hunt for alternatives. Acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy, Ayurveda, and hypnosis are examples of therapy modalities. Alternative therapies, on the other hand, are currently recommended as a supplement to traditional treatment. Although their efficacy as a standalone therapy is debatable, when used in conjunction with conventional treatment, they can be a valuable additio

Enhancing rhizoremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons through bioaugmentation with a plant growth-promoting bacterial consortium.

The slow rate of natural attenuation of organic pollutants, together with unwanted environmental impacts of traditional remediation strategies, has necessitated the exploration of plant-microbe systems for enhanced bioremediation applications. The identification of microorganisms capable of promoting rhizoremediation through both plant growth-promoting and hydrocarbon-degrading processes is crucial to the success and adoption of plant-based remediation techniques. In this study, through successive enrichments of soil samples from a historic oil-contaminated site in Wietze, Germany, we isolated

Application of biochar for acid gas removal: experimental and statistical analysis using CO2.

Acid gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are common contaminants in oil and gas operations, landfill gases, and exhaust stacks from power plants. While there are processes currently used to treat these effluents (e.g., amine absorption and adsorption using zeolite), many of these processes require high energy, space, and hazardous chemicals. Removal using biochar derived from the fast pyrolysis of forestry residues represents a more sustainable option. In this study, adsorption using CO2 as a surrogate for acid gases was investigated using various biochars produced from fast pyro

Hazardous dichloromethane recovery in combined temperature and vacuum pressure swing adsorption process.

Organic vapors emitted from solvents used in chemical and pharmaceutical processes, or from hydrocarbon fuel storage stations at oil terminals, can be efficiently captured by adsorption onto activated carbon beds. To recover vapors after the adsorption step, two modes of regeneration were selected and could be possibly combined: thermal desorption by hot nitrogen flow and vacuum depressurization (VTSA). Because of ignition risks, the conditions in which the beds operate during the adsorption and regeneration steps need to be strictly controlled, as well as optimized to maintain good performanc

Runoff and windblown vehicle spray from road surfaces, risks and measures for soil and water.

Soil and surface water along roads are exposed to pollution from motorways. The main pollutants are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), mineral oil, heavy metals and salt. These pollutants originate from vehicles (fuel, wires, leakage), wear and degradation of road surfaces and road furniture (i.e. crash barriers) and the application of de-icing salts. Runoff, vehicle spray and dry deposition disperse these contaminants into the soft shoulder (verges) of the roads and surface water to a measurable distance of about 50 up to more then 150 m from the road. Despite many monitoring programs, l

Ozone-loaded nano/micro-oil droplets induce senescence-associated immunogenicity via intracellular glycation.

Cancer cells exhibit elevated metabolic activity that fuels proliferation while maintaining redox homeostasis to survive oxidative stress. Therapeutic strategies that can precisely target both tumor metabolism and the remodeled tumor microenvironment remain major challenges in cancer treatment. To address this, we engineered a saponin-emulsified nano/micro-sized oil droplet system (NOD(O)) for efficient ozone delivery. Following cellular endocytosis, NOD(O) localizes to lysosomes, where the surfactant of saponin promotes lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) and releases NOD(O) into the cy

Confocal Raman Microscopy as an In Situ Probe of Volume Change in Hydration-Sensitive Polymer Membranes.

An approach is described for measuring hydration-induced volume change within ion conductive polymer membranes and thin films by adapting the technique of confocal Raman microscopy. With careful consideration of factors that affect excitation and scattering within the confocal probe volume region, material swelling and deswelling were estimated from the intensities of polymer matrix spectral features. A high numerical aperture oil-immersion objective was used to achieve tight focusing within samples and the efficient collection of Raman scattered light. The approach is demonstrated for a fluor

Two-Stage Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide Into Aromatics Via Methane.

In the refinery of the future, the input shifts from crude oil to biomass, plastic, and CO2. Therefore, we need to find alternative routes to produce chemical building blocks, such as aromatics, which are used in products like, for example, fuels. In this study, we investigated a two-stage route to produce benzene from CO2. In two sequential reactions, CO2 is first converted into methane over a Ni/TiO2 catalyst, and methane is further reacted to yield benzene using a Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst via the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction. Through a combination of thermodynamic calculations and e

Solid-oil separation of coal tar residue to reduce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via microwave-assisted extraction.

Coal tar residue (CTR) is acknowledged as hazardous industrial waste with high contents of carbon and toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Microwave-assisted extraction for separating tar and residue in CTR was investigated to reduce the content of PAHs. The key operating factors such as solvent type, solvent addition amount, radiation temperature, and radiation time in the extraction process were evaluated. Results showed that extreme extraction performance in the solvent with cyclic structure was attained, and an enhancement in extraction efficiency was achieved in elevated solvent
