Functional reorganization in obstructive sleep apnoea and insomnia: A systematic review of the resting-state fMRI.

Functional neuroimaging techniques have accelerated progress in the study of sleep disorders. Considering the striking prevalence of these disorders in the general population, however, as well as their strong bidirectional relationship with major neuropsychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder, their numbers are still surprisingly low. This review examines the contribution of resting state functional MRI to current understanding of two major sleep disorders, insomnia disorder and obstructive sleep apnoea. An attempt is made to learn from parallels of previous resting state func…

Functional imaging in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic brain disease characterized by loss of capacity in movement control, cognition, and emotional regulation over a period of about 30 years. Since it is well established that clinical impairments and brain atrophy can be detected decades prior to receiving a clinical diagnosis, functional neuroimaging efforts have gained momentum in HD research. In most brain disorders, there is accumulating evidence that the clinical manifestations of disease do not simply depend on the extent of tissue loss, but represent a complex balance among neuronal dysfunction, tissu…

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Multimodal Abnormalities of Brain Structure and Function in Chronic Neck Pain.

BACKGROUND: Previous neuroimaging studies of patients with chronic neck pain (CNP) have revealed abnormal functional activity and structure of brain regions. However, these results often exhibit variability. Therefore, we have integrated existing research findings using a multimodal meta-analysis to obtain consistent and reliable results on brain functional activity and structural changes in CNP patients. METHODS: Studies of the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations, regional homogeneity, or voxel-based morphometry that investigated the differences in brain function and structure between CN

Prediction of individual performance and verbal intelligence scores from resting-state fMRI in children and adolescents.

The neuroimaging basis of intelligence remains elusive; however, there is a growing body of research employing connectome-based predictive modeling to estimate individual intelligence scores, aiming to identify the optimal set of neuroimaging features for accurately predicting an individual's cognitive abilities. Compared to adults, the disparities in cognitive performance among children and adolescents are more likely to captivate individuals' interest and attention. Limited research has been dedicated to exploring neuroimaging markers of intelligence specifically in the pediatric population.

Neuroimaging in the Rare Sleep Disorder of Kleine-Levin Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is characterized by episodes of hypersomnia. Additionally, these patients can present with hyperphagia, hypersexuality, abnormal behavior, and cognitive dysfunction. Functional neuroimaging studies such as fMRI-BOLD, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) or SPECT help us understand the neuropathological bases of different disorders. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the neuroimaging features of KLS patients and their clinical correlations. This systematic review was conducted by following the Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) …

Hoffmann's sign in cervical spondylotic myelopathy patients: pathological insights from neuroimaging.

OBJECTIVE: Hoffmann's sign testing is a commonly used physical examination in clinical practice for patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). However, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying its occurrence and development have not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore whether a positive Hoffmann's sign (PHS) in CSM patients is associated with spinal cord and brain remodeling and to identify potential neuroimaging biomarkers with diagnostic value. METHODS: Seventy-six patients with CSM and 40 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs) unde

Neuroimaging-based analysis of DBS outcomes in pediatric dystonia: Insights from the GEPESTIM registry.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment in patients of various ages with pharmaco-resistant neurological disorders. Surgical targeting and postoperative programming of DBS depend on the spatial location of the stimulating electrodes in relation to the surrounding anatomical structures, and on electrode connectivity to a specific distribution pattern within brain networks. Such information is usually collected using group-level analysis, which relies on the availability of normative imaging resources (atlases and connectomes). Analysis of DBS data in children with

Neuroimaging in genetic frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have a strong clinical, genetic and pathological overlap. This review focuses on the current understanding of structural, functional and molecular neuroimaging signatures of genetic FTD and ALS. We overview quantitative neuroimaging studies on the most common genes associated with FTD (MAPT, GRN), ALS (SOD1), and both (C9orf72), and summarize visual observations of images reported in the rarer genes (CHMP2B, TARDBP, FUS, OPTN, VCP, UBQLN2, SQSTM1, TREM2, CHCHD10, TBK1).

[Severe behavioral disorder caused by an organic disease].

A 65-year-old architect was admitted to our Memory Clinic because of rapidly progressive dementia accompanied by behavioral disorders, which severely restricted his functional independence. The physical examination revealed several focal neurological signs, and neuroimaging confirmed a cerebellar hemorrhage, multiple microbleeds and an ischemic lacunar infarct. Executive functioning was highly impaired. This case report illustrates cerebral amyloid angiopathy as an important entity of vascular dementia and highlights the importance of neuroimaging in patients with suspected vascular cognitive

Altered Functional Connectivity and Amyloid Deposition in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-Associated Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, with neuroinflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and neuropathologic markers such as β-amyloid and τ implicated as potential mechanisms. However, the roles of altered functional connectivity and amyloid deposition as biomarkers in the progression of cognitive impairment among patients with PTSD remain unclear, with limited and often conflicting evidence from existing neuroimaging studies. This study examines these neuroimaging markers in patients with PTSD with

Pregabalin rectifies aberrant brain chemistry, connectivity, and functional response in chronic pain patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain remains a significant challenge for modern health care as its pathologic mechanisms are largely unknown and preclinical animal models suffer from limitations in assessing this complex subjective experience. However, human brain neuroimaging techniques enable the assessment of functional and neurochemical alterations in patients experiencing chronic pain and how these factors may dynamically change with pharmacologic treatment. METHODS: To identify the clinical action of pregabalin, a proven analgesic, the authors performed three complementary brain neuroimaging proced

Multimodal multicentre investigation of diagnostic and prognostic markers in disorders of consciousness.

Severely brain-injured patients may enter a spectrum of conditions collectively known as disorders of consciousness. This spectrum includes clinical conditions such as unresponsive wakefulness syndrome or minimally conscious state, where the behavioural assessment of consciousness can often be deceptive. To bridge this dissociation, neuroimaging techniques are employed to identify the residual brain functions. Each neuroimaging modality imperfectly captures distinct aspects of brain preservation-functional, anatomical, or both. In this study, we adopt a comprehensive approach by integrating th

Neuroimaging findings in narcolepsy with cataplexy.

Various brain imaging techniques have been used to study narcolepsy with cataplexy. Anatomical data with magnetic resonance imaging have characterized specific alterations in grey and white matter and their potential implications on disease severity. Functional neuroimaging studies have described changes in brain perfusion or glucose metabolism during resting wakefulness, as well as brain responses to emotional stimulation in narcoleptic patients. These different imaging modalities provide evidence for structural and functional abnormalities compatible with a deficit in the hypocretinergic sys…

Functional brain organization for number processing in pre-verbal infants.

Humans are born with the ability to mentally represent the approximate numerosity of a set of objects, but little is known about the brain systems that sub-serve this ability early in life and their relation to the brain systems underlying symbolic number and mathematics later in development. Here we investigate processing of numerical magnitudes before the acquisition of a symbolic numerical system or even spoken language, by measuring the brain response to numerosity changes in pre-verbal infants using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). To do this, we presented infants with two t
