OBJECTIVES: Carbapenems are one of the last-report therapeutic choices to treat infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) micro-organisms. For this reason, the spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae represents a serious health-public problem. Here we describe isolates co-producing blaNDM-5 and blaOXA-1.
METHODS: Three Escherichia coli isolates obtained from patients with invasive infections were analysed by phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
RESULTS: All of the isolates were resistant to carbapenems, most β-lactam antibiotics, pipe

Global emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a continuing challenge for modern healthcare. However, the knowledge, regarding the epidemiology of salmonellosis caused by the monophasic variant S. 4,[5],12:i:- in hospitalized patients, is limited in China. To bridge this gap, we carried out a retrospective study to determine the antimicrobial resistance, trends, and risk factors of S. Typhimurium and S. 4,[5],12:i:- (n = 329) recovered from patients in Zhejiang province between 2011 and 2019. The results showed that 90.57% (298/329) of the isolates wer

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) strains are a serious health problem in India, also contributing to one-fourth of the global MDR tuberculosis (TB) burden. About 36% of the MDR MTBC strains are reported fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistant leading to high pre-extensively drug-resistant (pre-XDR) and XDR-TB (further resistance against bedaquiline and/or linezolid) rates. Still, factors driving the MDR/pre-XDR epidemic in India are not well defined.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analyzed 1852 consecutive MTBC strains obtained from patients from a

The worldwide dissemination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae is a major public health issue. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of MDR Escherichia coli (MDR-EC) isolates, in inpatients/outpatients with urinary tract infections at Sétif University Hospital (Algeria). Bacterial cultures were obtained from 426 of the 3,944 urine samples collected from January 2015 to February 2017. Among these cultures, 215 E. coli isolates were identified by mass spectrometry, and 38 (17.7%) were MDR-EC (disk diffusion method): 36 produced only extended-spectrum β-lactamases (

PURPOSE: Genotypic methods have considerably improved the diagnosis of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. One of these tests is Anyplex II MTB/MDR/XDR (Anyplex). Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of this multiplex PCR.
METHODS: We conducted our study on 47 MDR tuberculosis and 14 pan-susceptible strains. We evaluated the ability of Anyplex to detect resistance mutations in rpoB (rifampin [RIF]), katG and inhA (isoniazid [INH]), gyrA (fluoroquinolones [FLQ]), and rrs and eis (aminoglycosides [AMG]). We used the agar proportion method as gold standard. We also studied conc

The modulation of efflux pump functions under fluoroquinolone (FQ) exposure is of great concern as it could result in occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. In this study, MDR mechanism in Pseudomonas aeruginosa induced via moxifloxacin (MOX) pressure was investigated. After serial MOX [concentration of 0.5 × the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)] exposure, the fully susceptible P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 strain has increased its MIC not only toward MOX (1→128 mg/L) but also to other antibiotics. Furthermore, this MOX-exposed strain did not revert to antibiotic-sensitive

BACKGROUND: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) typically cause self-limiting enterocolitis, but can lead to life-threatening invasive diseases, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, multidrug-resistant (MDR) NTS strains with increasing non-susceptibility to third-generation cephalosporins pose a growing public health threat. As traditional antimicrobial treatments become less effective, bacteriophages are emerging as a potential alternative. This study aimed to isolate and characterize bacteriophages targeting MDR and extended spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing non-typhoidal Salmonella

Urban farms and community gardens support local food production, though these agroecosystems can contain emerging environmental contaminants that may contribute to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Our previous research enumerated AMR bacteria associated with leafy vegetable production environments in the greater Washington, D.C. area, identifying >100 isolates with multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes. Here, we performed whole genome sequencing analysis of 87 of these strains recovered from leafy greens (n=29), root zone soil (n=42), and bulk soil (n=16) to comprehensively

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major pathogens responsible for causing food poisoning worldwide. The emergence of antibiotic resistance in this bacterium is influenced by various factors. Among them, bacterial acquired defense systems described as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-cas system might be involved in antibiotic resistance development in bacteria. The current study was designed to assess the prevalence of S. aureus and its antibiotic resistance profile and identify the relationship of the CRISPR-cas system with antimicrobial resistance, followed

BACKGROUND: MDR and hypervirulence (hv) are typically observed in separate Klebsiella pneumoniae populations. However, convergent strains with both properties have been documented and potentially pose a high risk to public health in the form of invasive infections with limited treatment options.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to characterize the genetic determinants of virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in two ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae isolates belonging to the international MDR clone ST15.
METHODS: The complete genome sequences of both isolates, including their plasmids, were resolved

Escherichia coli ST1193 is an emerging global multidrug (MDR) high-risk clone and an important cause of community-onset urinary and bloodstream infections. ST1193 is imitating E. coli ST131, the most successful MDR clone of all time. Both clones emerged in the early 1990s by acquiring quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) mutations, IncF plasmids, virulence factors, and type 1 pilus (fimH) recombination. They are the only MDR clones that are dominant among unselected E. coli populations. ST131 is the most frequent clone and ST1193 the second most frequent clone among fluoroquinolone/c

OBJECTIVES: Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are the cornerstone of treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). They are the most effective second-line antimycobacterial drugs and are recommended for the treatment of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). However, it is widely accepted that FQ resistance is high among MDR-TB isolates. Thus, characterisation of mutations conferring resistance to FQs will be of a great interest for effective and efficient management of TB resistance in Morocco.
METHODS: A laboratory collection of 30 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates previously characterised as phenotypic

Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are highly prevalent globally, and various antibiotics are employed for their treatment. However, the emergence of drug-resistant uropathogens towards these antibiotics causes a high rate of morbidity and mortality. This study was conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory of Grande International Hospital from November 2021 to May 2022 and aimed to assess the prevalence of UTI caused by Escherichia coli and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern with a focus on extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and the prevalence of two genes (blaCTX-M and blaTEM) in ceph
