Rabies in Tunisia: A spatio-temporal analysis in the region of CapBon-Nabeul.

Human rabies is a significant public health concern in Tunisia. However, the spatiotemporal spread pattern of rabies in dogs, the major reservoir and vector, and its determinants are poorly understood. We collected geographic locations and timeline of reported animal rabies cases in the region of CapBon (study area), for the years 2015-2019 and integrated them in Geographical Information System (GIS) approach to explore the spatio-temporal pattern of dog rabies. The results show that roads and irrigated areas can act as ecological corridors to viral spread. Our study showed that there was a si

Geographical tracking and mapping of coronavirus disease COVID-19/severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic and associated events around the world: how 21st century GIS technologies are supporting the global fight against outbreaks and epidemics.

In December 2019, a new virus (initially called 'Novel Coronavirus 2019-nCoV' and later renamed to SARS-CoV-2) causing severe acute respiratory syndrome (coronavirus disease COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and rapidly spread to other parts of China and other countries around the world, despite China's massive efforts to contain the disease within Hubei. As with the original SARS-CoV epidemic of 2002/2003 and with seasonal influenza, geographic information systems and methods, including, among other application possibilities, online real-or near-real-time mapping of disease c…

HIV risk and the association with accessibility coverage to medical facilities and socioeconomic status among heroin users in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2011-2015): A GIS approach.

Illegal drug use has caused considerable health and social costs. Access to medical treatment has been one of the most cost-effective interventions to reduce problematic drug use. Accessibility to treatment, which can be analyzed by the spatial approach such as geographic information system (GIS), has thus been utilized as a measure of the proportion of population that reaches appropriate health services. In this study, the association of accessibility coverage to medical facilities and socioeconomic status with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk for heroin users was evaluated by GIS anal

Temporal and spatial distribution characteristics in the natural plague foci of Chinese Mongolian gerbils based on spatial autocorrelation.

BACKGROUND: The nest flea index of Meriones unguiculatus is a critical indicator for the prevention and control of plague, which can be used not only to detect the spatial and temporal distributions of Meriones unguiculatus, but also to reveal its cluster rule. This research detected the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the plague natural foci of Mongolian gerbils by body flea index from 2005 to 2014, in order to predict plague outbreaks. METHODS: Global spatial autocorrelation was used to describe the entire spatial distribution pattern of the body flea index in the natur

Prediction of high-risk areas for visceral leishmaniasis using socioeconomic indicators and remote sensing data.

Spatial heterogeneity in the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an important aspect to be considered in planning control actions for the disease. The objective of this study was to predict areas at high risk for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) based on socioeconomic indicators and remote sensing data. We applied classification and regression trees to develop and validate prediction models. Performance of the models was assessed by means of sensitivity, specificity and area under the ROC curve. The model developed was able to discriminate 15 subsets of census tracts (CT) with different pro

Spatial distribution and temporal variation of high fluoride contents in groundwater and prevalence of fluorosis in humans in Yuanmou County, Southwest China.

Successive surveys conducted in 1984, 2006 and 2007, of all villages in Yuanmou County, China, highlighted 40 villages with groundwater fluoride levels higher than 1.0mg/L and related cases of human fluorosis. Using the data from these surveys and by employing geographic information system (GIS) techniques, high fluoride levels and fluorosis cases were mapped. The results show high fluoride concentrations and fluorosis hotspots were found to be predominately located in the lowlands of central Yuanmou County. Spatial distribution of high fluoride levels was found to be primarily determined by g

Tracking the polio virus down the Congo River: a case study on the use of Google Earth in public health planning and mapping.

BACKGROUND: The use of GIS in public health is growing, a consequence of a rapidly evolving technology and increasing accessibility to a wider audience. Google Earth (GE) is becoming an important mapping infrastructure for public health. However, generating traditional public health maps for GE is still beyond the reach of most public health professionals. In this paper, we explain, through the example of polio eradication activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, how we used GE Earth as a planning tool and we share the methods used to generate public health maps. RESULTS: The use of GE

Three-dimensional visualization of cultural clusters in the 1878 yellow fever epidemic of New Orleans.

BACKGROUND: An epidemic may exhibit different spatial patterns with a change in geographic scale, with each scale having different conduits and impediments to disease spread. Mapping disease at each of these scales often reveals different cluster patterns. This paper will consider this change of geographic scale in an analysis of yellow fever deaths for New Orleans in 1878. Global clustering for the whole city, will be followed by a focus on the French Quarter, then clusters of that area, and finally street-level patterns of a single cluster. The three-dimensional visualization capabilities of

A GIS tool to estimate West Nile virus risk based on a degree-day model.

West Nile virus (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) is a serious infectious disease that recently spread across the North America continent. A spatial analysis tool was developed on the ArcMap 9.x platform to estimate potential West Nile virus activity using a spatially explicit degree-day model. The model identifies when the virus Extrinsic Incubation Period (EIP) is completed within the vector longevity during mid-summer months. The EIP is treated as a threshold indicator of the potential for virus emergence and activity. Comparing the number of West Nile virus cases in Wyoming reported from 2003 to

Comparing sampling approaches for assessing sub-national vaccination coverage: a pilot study in Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Vaccination coverage surveys (VCS) are essential for monitoring program performance, especially where administrative data are unreliable. While national and sub-national estimates are common, district-level data remain limited despite their value for local planning and equity monitoring. This study compared three alternative sampling approaches (ASAs)-Kinshasa School of Public Health VCS (KSPH-VCS), Geographic Information System (GIS)-based sampling, and Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS)-to the WHO Vaccination Coverage Cluster Survey (WHO-VCCS) in terms of validity and precision among chil
