Investigation of sediment-induced eutrophication in two coastal lagoons of the southern Caspian Sea.

This study provides a multidisciplinary analysis of sediment-induced eutrophication in two coastal lagoons of the southern Caspian Sea, integrating hydrochemical assessments, remote sensing techniques, and sediment core investigations. Hydrochemical analysis confirmed that sediment resuspension during flushing operations led to elevated turbidity, which facilitated the transport of phosphorus-rich particles into the lagoons and resulted in a 127.6% increase in total phosphorus levels. Remote sensing data further validated these findings, demonstrating a marked increase in turbidity following f

Ghost-rocks' microbiota: metagenomic insights into their influence on the biogeochemistry of karstic cave and groundwater.

Microbial communities in the critical zone drive key geochemical processes, but many subsurface habitats remain poorly characterized. Ghost-rock karst systems in particular represent unexplored microbial niches. Here, we provide the first genome-resolved metagenomic comparison of ghost-rock and groundwater microbial communities from the Sterkfontein karst system (South Africa). Ghost-rock and groundwater communities host distinct taxonomic and metabolic assemblages. Groundwater communities are dominated by chemolithotrophs capable of oxidizing sulfur- and nitrogen-bearing compounds, and by het

Different Ferromanganese Concretion Morphologies Host Distinct Microbial Communities and Metal Accumulation Patterns in the Baltic Sea.

Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) concretions are porous accumulations of iron and manganese (hydr)oxides. While recent studies suggest that microbes contribute to metal accumulation in Baltic Sea concretions, the detailed composition of microbial communities and their impact on metal enrichment across different concretion morphotypes remain unexplored. We investigated how microbes influence the accumulation and release of trace metals and rare-earth elements in Fe-Mn concretions from the Gulf of Finland through 15-week microcosm incubation experiments with biotic and abiotic treatments, focusing on thre

Spatial heterogeneity of methylmercury in plateau wetland: Driving forces from the decomposition of different aquatic plants.

Aquatic plant decline in wetlands is globally prevalent, which can affect mercury (Hg) methylation in sediment, whereas it is yet unknown whether this process depends on the specific plant species. A short-term decomposition experiment was conducted using dominant aquatic plants in a plateau wetland to assess their effects on Hg methylation in sediment. The study revealed that the decomposition of aquatic plants differentially influences the dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties, sulfate levels, and microbial composition, as well as methylmercury (MeHg) production in sediment. A two-stage

Occurrence, potential sources, and ecological risk of current-use pesticides in mangrove sediments from South China.

Mangrove forests act as sinks for contaminants carried by inland runoff, but the occurrence and potential ecological risk of current-use pesticides (CUPs) in mangrove sediments are limitedly known. In this study, 75 pesticides (including 57 insecticides, 13 herbicides, and five fungicides) were analyzed in 38 mangrove sediments from urban, agricultural, and aquacultural areas in Zhanjiang, China. The total pesticide concentrations in sediments ranged from 4.55-364 ng/g dry weight (mean ± SD = 68.1 ± 67.3 ng/g dry wt), with insecticides dominating at 96%. Among the regions, mangrove sediments f

Recommendations for the development of erosion-resistant tidal marshes to enhance nature-based flood risk mitigation.

There is growing interest in nature-based hybrid flood risk mitigation, in which wetland ecosystems, such as tidal marshes, are an integral part. Tidal marshes can attenuate wave loading on defense structures, reduce breach depth in case of defense structure failure, attenuate storm surges, reduce shoreline erosion, and grow vertically with sea-level rise. Marshes are currently being restored and created for flood risk mitigation and/or for other ecosystem services, making it crucial that they can persist in the long term and therefore develop erosion-resistant sediment beds. In this paper, we

Microbial Communities Display Key Functional Differences between Reference and Restored Salt Marshes.

Salt marshes, despite their ecological importance (i.e., carbon sequestration) and rapid decline due to climate change and sea-level rise. Salt marsh ecosystems provide essential services such as removal of pollutants, carbon sequestration, and protection of coastal lands from storm surges. These services are strongly influenced by plant productivity, which is closely linked to microbial processes such as biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. To retain carbon sequestration and other ecological functions, substantial efforts are currently directed towards coastal marsh restora

Trace elements pollution in surface sediment of the Sea of Marmara coastal and transition water.

The increasing anthropogenic activities in the Sea of Marmara, such as industrialization, maritime traffic, and urbanization, have significantly contributed to the introduction of various contaminants, into its sediments. The aim of this study is to determine the levels of trace elements accumulated in the transitional and coastal waters of the Sea of Marmara and to assess the pollution status of the region. Surface sediments were collected using a Van Veen Grab from 21 stations representing different water masses in May, July, and September 2018 and stored in plastic bags at -21 °C. The conce

The impact of water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) on the chemistry of dissolved organic matter in the Yellow River estuary and adjacent waters.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays important roles in the global carbon cycle and aquatic ecosystem health. Estuaries are critical zones connecting land and ocean in which DOM experiences dispersion, transformation, degradation, deposition, etc. The Water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) was implemented in Yellow River (YR) and approximately half of annually sediment and a quarter of annually water were poured into estuary in around 20 days. Meanwhile, huge amounts of DOM were discharged into Yellow River estuary (YRE) rapidly, but their processes and fates in YRE and adjacent seas are uncl

The Deep Subsurface Biosphere and its Substrates Along a One-Million-Year Ferruginous Lake Archive.

Lake Towuti, Indonesia, is an ancient stratified lake with ferruginous (iron-rich, sulfate-poor) anoxic bottom water conditions and a long depositional record affected by redox changes in the water column and sediments. As modern analogue of Earth's early ferruginous oceans, it enables the study of an active microbial subsurface biosphere and its role in organic matter and iron mineralization. Combining 16S rRNA genes, cell counts, pore water geochemistry, and bulk sediment profiles from a 100-m-long core, we present the first comprehensive characterization of the deep subsurface biosphere alo

Targeted and suspect screening reveal traditional and novel organophosphate esters in philippine sea sediment cores.

Information on the co-occurrence of traditional and novel organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the marine environment remains limited, hindering a comprehensive understanding of their pollution dynamics. This study comprehensively investigated 10 traditional OPFRs and 55 suspect compounds in four deep-sea sediment cores from the Philippine Sea. The total concentrations of targeted OPFRs (Σ10OPFRs) ranged from not detected to 24.7 ng/g dw, indicating moderate contamination in the studied area. Aryl-OPFRs dominated, with triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) as the major compound. Among the suspect

Organic carbon deposition of a typical plateau deep lake across 150 years.

Lakes are waterbodies, and their organic carbon (OC) depositions are one of the important C pools in the terrestrial ecosystem. The characteristics, size and change of these C pools are closely related to climate issues and human activities. Here Lake Chenghai was chosen as a representative, and the distribution, property and source of OC deposition were systematically investigated using isotopes and chemical biomarkers methods and 24-index indicators. The results showed that distribution pattern of OC deposition could be divided into two types, including a relative stable stage in the bottom

Seasonal variations in greenhouse gas production in coastal sandy sediments.

Understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) production rates and ecological effects of sandy coastal sediments is critical for refining global carbon cycle assessments. Despite their extensive distribution and potential role in climate regulation, sandy sediments remain understudied compared to muddy counterparts, particularly regarding seasonal dynamics and redox-controlled biogeochemical processes. This study investigates seasonal GHG dynamics in sandy coastal sediments of the Guangdong Province, China. Results revealed that temperature as the primary seasonal driver, directly regulating microbia

Potential for microbial denitrification coupled with methanol oxidation found in abundant MAGs in Antarctic Peninsula sediments.

Denitrification accounts for a substantial nitrogen loss from environmental systems, shifting microbial composition and impacting other biogeochemical cycles. In Antarctica, rising temperatures cause increased organic matter deposition in marine sediments, which can significantly alter microbially mediated denitrification. To examine the genetic potential of microorganisms driving N-cycling in these sediments, benthic sediment cores were collected at two sites in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. DNA was extracted from multiple depths at each site, resulting in the reconstruction of 75 high-quality

Carbon Isotope Fractionation of Dissolved Organic Matter Due to •OH-Based Oxidation.

•OH-based oxidation plays a crucial role in dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation and carbon flux, whereas quantifying the contribution of this pathway remains challenging. Here we combined the concentration with the carbon isotope analysis of DOM and its generated CO2 to quantify the contribution of •OH-based oxidation. Results showed that the 13C enrichment factors (ε values) were -8.1‰ to -8.9‰ for benzene ring oxidation in aromatic compounds, -4.2‰ to -28.9‰ for lower-molecular-weight organic acids, and -13.0‰ for DOM from sediment. The fractionation of sediment DOM reflects the av

Sulfur-rich deposits associated with the deep submarine volcano Fani Maoré support broad microbial sulfur cycling communities.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, the island of Mayotte located in the western Indian ocean, has experienced a seismo-volcanic crisis linked to the birth of an impressive intraplate submarine volcano at the east of the island. This volcano, named Fani Maoré, which has not yet been the subject of microbiological studies, triggered the largest submarine eruptive event ever recorded. Close to the volcano's summit is a singular meter-size structure containing abundant native sulfur mineralizations. While a wide variety of ecosystems, with more or less well documented microbial communities, are found in active

Synchronous algal removal and phosphorus immobilization by attapulgite-based Ca-Al-LDH incorporated with nano-CaO₂ for cyanobacterial bloom control.

Relocating cyanobacteria from surface waters to sediments using modified clay is an established emergency measure for controlling cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic systems. However, the accumulation and subsequent decay of settled algal biomass promote sedimentary phosphorus release, compromising the long-term efficacy of this interventions measure against eutrophication and bloom recurrence. This study synthesized attapulgite-based calcium-aluminum layered double hydroxide incorporated with nano-calcium peroxide (nCaO₂/Ca-Al-LDH) via in-situ loading. The simultaneous cyanobacterial removal an

Sources and mineralization determine the generation and transformation pathway of sedimentary organic matter over the past century.

Sedimentary organic matter (SOM), an organic mixture of complex compositions with diverse structures, plays a crucial role in lake carbon cycling. The quantity, sources, compositions and biogeochemical behaviors of SOM typically vary with lake ecosystem evolution and mineralization process. However, the dynamic response and transformation pathway of SOM during these joint processes remain incompletely understood, particularly in time dimension. Geochronology, total organic carbon (TOC), nutrients and SOM sources in a sediment core from Erhai Lake were determined using radionuclides, geochemica
