Selective deficit of praxis imagery in ideomotor apraxia.

We studied imagery for learned, skilled movements (praxis imagery) in a patient with severe ideomotor apraxia and intact language abilities. This patient, who made predominantly spatial and movement errors when performing transitive movements demonstrating the use of tools (transitive gestures), was also impaired in her ability to answer imagery questions about joint movement or the spatial position of the hands during action. However, visual object imagery was spared. The finding of parallel praxis production and praxis imagery deficits in this patient suggests that the same representations u…

Design of a medical simulator for subcutaneous contraceptive implant insertion.

New contraceptive methods like the subcutaneous implant offers a new kind of comfort for women with an efficiency similar to the contraceptive pill. Unfortunately, the few numbers of unintended pregnancies that have been reported, are generally due to a bad insertion of the implant. In order to give more security to patients, we have designed, in close collaboration with physicians, a new kind of medical simulator. This simulator can be used for two purposes: one for training novice physicians in the correct gesture and the other for doctor certification which will help to determine if they ar

Movement Imitation via an Abstract Trajectory Representation in Dorsal Premotor Cortex.

Humans are particularly good at copying novel and meaningless gestures. The mechanistic and anatomical basis for this specialized imitation ability remains largely unknown. One idea is that imitation occurs by matching body configurations. Here we propose an alternative route to imitation that depends on a body-independent representation of the trajectory path of the end-effector. We studied a group of patients with strokes in the left frontoparietal cortices. We found that they were equally impaired at imitating movement trajectories using the ipsilesional limb (i.e., the nonparetic side) tha…

Distinct sensitivities of the lateral prefrontal cortex and extrastriate body area to contingency between executed and observed actions.

Detecting relationships between our own actions and the subsequent actions of others is critical for our social behavior. Self-actions diffe … cal for the integration processes for social contingency. Twenty-four adults performed right finger gestures and then observed them as feedback. We manipulated three parameters of visual feedback: action kinematics (same or different gestures), body identity (self or other), and feedback timing (simultaneous or delayed). Three-way interactions of these fac …

Communication forms and functions of children and adults with severe mental retardation in community and institutional settings.

The forms and functions of expressive communication produced by 84 individuals with severe mental retardation were assessed, using a structured communication sampling procedure. Symbolic communication acts were produced by 39 participants, and 27 of these symbolic communicators produced one or more multiword/multisymbol utterances. Of the remaining participants, 38 produced intentional but nonsymbolic communication acts; 7 were not observed to produce any intentional communication. For all participants who produced intentional communication, there were significantly more imperative than declar

Multiple learning tasks in patients with ideomotor apraxia.

The Authors studied a group of patients with ideomotor apraxia (LBD+) to verify if these patients had some difficulties in multiple learning tasks in respect to non-apraxic patients and normal control subjects. All five groups were submitted to gesture learning task, motor skill learning task, supra-span (Corsi) learning task. The results indicate that learning difficulties were present in LBD+ patients, as demonstrated by their low performance in gesture sequence, motor skill and score of block-tapping supra-span task. This fact may be seen as a basic learning deficit and therefore linked to

Speech Sound Disorders in Children: An Articulatory Phonology Perspective.

Speech Sound Disorders (SSDs) is a generic term used to describe a range of difficulties producing speech sounds in children (McLeod and Bak … 1992; van Lieshout and Goldstein, 2008). We present evidence supporting the notion of articulatory gestures at the level of speech production and as reflected in control processes in the brain and discuss how an articulatory "gesture"-based approach can account for articulatory behaviors in typical and disordered speech production (van Lieshout, 2004; Pou …

A Prosthetic Hand System by Contralateral-Collaborative Control Based on Multi-task Learning.

Upper-limb amputees often experience difficulty achieving efficient bimanual coordination due to the limited flexibility and adaptability of conventional prosthetic systems, which restricts their self-care capabilities and overall quality of life in daily activities. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel contralateral cooperative control system that utilizes surface electromyography signals from the intact limb to drive the prosthetic hand on the affected side, thereby enabling coordinated execution of both symmetric and auxiliary gestures. A hybrid multi-task learning model combi…

SIAgent: Spatial Interaction Agent via LLM-Powered Eye-Hand Motion Intent Understanding in VR.

Eye-hand coordinated interaction is becoming a mainstream interaction modality in Virtual Reality (VR) user interfaces. Current paradigms for this multimodal interaction require users to learn predefined gestures and memorize multiple gesture-task associations, which can be summarized as an "Operation-to-Intent" paradigm. This paradigm increases users' learning costs and has low interaction error tolerance. In this paper, we propose SIAgent, a novel "Intent-to-Operation" framework allowing users to express interaction intents through natural eye-hand motions based on common sense and habits. O…

Neonatal imitation predicts infant rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) social and anxiety-related behaviours at one year.

The identification of early markers that predict the development of specific social trajectories is critical to understand the developmental and neurobiological underpinnings of healthy social development. We investigated, in infant rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), whether newborns' capacity to imitate facial gestures is a valid predictive marker for the emergence of social competencies later in development, at one year of age. Here we first assessed whether infant macaques (N = 126) imitate lipsmacking gestures (a macaque affiliative expression) performed by a human experimenter in their fir…

Use of pointing in parent-child interactions by hearing children of deaf and hearing parents: A follow-up from 1- to 3-years of age.

Pointing plays a significant role in communication and language development. However, in spoken languages pointing has been viewed as a non-verbal gesture, whereas in sign languages, pointing is regarded to represent a linguistic unit of language. This study compared the use of pointing between seven bilingual hearing children of deaf parents (Kids of Deaf Adults [KODAs]) interacting with their deaf parents and five hearing children interacting with their hearing parents. Data were collected in 6-month intervals from the age of 1;0 to 3;0. Pointing frequency among the deaf parents and KODAs wa

Handedness for grasping objects and declarative pointing: a longitudinal study.

It is still unclear whether infants become right-handed because of their left-hemisphere specialization for language (through gestural communication for instance), whether they speak predominantly with their left hemisphere because of this hemisphere's superiority in controlling sequential actions which first results in right-handedness, or whether the two lateralization processes develop independently. To tackle this question, we followed 26 human infants from 8 to 20 months to evaluate the temporal relationship between the emergence of hand preference for grasping objects and for declarative

fNIRS-Based Differences in Cortical Activation during Tool Use, Pantomimed Actions, and Meaningless Actions between Children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties with tool use and pantomime actions. The current study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine the neural mechanisms underlying these gestural difficulties. Thirty-one children with and without ASD (age (mean ± SE) = 11.0 ± 0.6) completed a naturalistic peg-hammering task using an actual hammer (hammer condition), pantomiming hammering actions (pantomime condition), and performing meaningless actions with similar joint motions (meaningless condition). Children with ASD exhibited poor praxis performance (pr
