Immune responses, DNA damage and ultrastructural alterations of gills in the marine mussel Lithophaga lithophaga exposed to CuO nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle (NP) pollution is a worldwide problem. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are one of the most used NPs in a variety of applications, which results in their increased release into the marine environment. In the present work, the marine mussel Lithophaga lithophaga was used as a model organism to evaluate the toxic effects of CuO NPs following 28 days of exposure to sub-lethal concentrations (5 and 20 μg/L). The time points were 1 day of exposure to assess the cell viability, phagocytosis in mussel haemocytes and genotoxicity (DNA damage in gills), 1, 14 and 28 days of exposure to…

Toxicological impacts of herbicide paraquat dichloride on histological profile (gills, liver, and kidney) of freshwater fish Channa punctatus (Bloch).

Paraquat dichloride is a broad-spectrum herbicide used worldwide. It is very fast acting and used to kill a wide range of grasses and broad-leaved weeds. Paraquat dichloride gets run off to aquatic water bodies, and its presence has been reported by various researchers, where its effect is certain on aquatic organisms. Fish are vulnerable to aquatic pollutants as they are in direct contact with their environment. Therefore, our study was designed to evaluate the effects of herbicide paraquat dichloride on histology of vital organs (gills, liver, and kidney) of the fresh water fish Channa punct…

Ca. Similichlamydia in Epitheliocystis Co-infection of Gilthead Seabream Gills: Unique Morphological Features of a Deep Branching Chlamydial Family.

The Planctomycetes-Verrucomicrobia-Chlamydiae (PVC) bacterial superphylum constitutes a broad range of organisms with an intriguing array of ultrastructural morphologies, including intracellular membranes and compartments and their corresponding complex genomes encoding these forms. The phylum Chlamydiae are all obligate intracellular bacteria and, although much is already known of their genomes from various families and how these regulate the various morphological forms, we know remarkably little about what is likely the deepest rooting clade of this phylum, which has only been found to conta

Ergasilus thatcheri n. sp. (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida, Ergasilidae) from the gills of Rhamdia quelen (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) from southern Brazil.

The female of Ergasilus thatcheri n. sp. (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida, Ergasilidae) is described from the gills of the "jundiá," Rhamdia quelen (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Pimelodidae), from fish ponds in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species has a falciform semipinnate terminal seta on the first exopod, which suggests phylogenetic affinity to 10 other congeners, all from fishes of the Amazon Basin. Based on general morphology, the new species shows great similarity to E. callophysus Thatcher and Boeger, 1984, a parasite of another pimelodid fish Callophysus macropterus. Ergasi…

Histochemical and ultrastructural characterization of the gills in tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier (Péron & Lesueur, 1822): Structural strategies for functional adaptation.

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a dominant marine elasmobranch predator whose respiratory physiology and gill structure enable the oxygen uptake necessary for its significant ecological role in sustaining balance within oceanic environments. The present study investigated the histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of gill tissue in the tiger shark to elucidate the morphological adaptations that enable efficient respiration in marine environments. Histologically, the gills were housed in antero-posteriorly compressed gill pouches, with the first pair being hemib…

Expression profiles of NOD1 and NOD2 and pathological changes in gills during Flavobacterium columnare infection in yellow catfish, Tachysurus fulvidraco.

NOD-like receptors are significant contributors to the immune response of fish against different types of pathogen invasion. NOD1 and NOD2 genes of yellow catfish (Tachysurus fulvidraco) were identified and characterized in this study. Yellow catfish NOD1 and NOD2 have open reading frames (ORFs) of 2841 and 2949 bp, encoding 946 and 982 amino acids, respectively. Both NOD1 and NOD2 are intracellular proteins lacking transmembrane regions and signal peptides. Sequence homology analysis revealed that the protein sequences of NOD1 and NOD2 of yellow catfish are highly similar to those of channel

It's all in the gills: evaluation of O2 uptake in Pacific hagfish refutes a major respiratory role for the skin.

Hagfish skin has been reported as an important site for ammonia excretion and as the major site of systemic oxygen acquisition. However, whether cutaneous O2 uptake is the dominant route of uptake remains under debate; all evidence supporting this hypothesis has been derived using indirect measurements. Here, we used partitioned chambers and direct measurements of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion to quantify cutaneous and branchial exchanges in Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) at rest and following exhaustive exercise. Hagfish primarily relied on the gills for both O2 uptake (81.0%…

Exploration of the mechanisms of protein quality control and osmoregulation in gills of Chromis viridis in response to reduced salinity.

Fish gills are the vital multifunctional organ in direct contact with external environment. Therefore, activation of the cytoprotective mechanisms to maintain branchial cell viability is important for fish upon stresses. Salinity is one of the major factors strongly affecting cellular and organismal functions. Reduction of ambient salinity may occur in coral reef and leads to osmotic stress for reef-associated stenohaline fish. However, the physiological responses to salinity stress in reef-associated fish were not examined substantially. With this regard, the physiological parameters and the …

Time course analysis of the mechanism by which silver inhibits active Na+ and Cl- uptake in gills of rainbow trout.

We aimed to test the hypothesis that an enhanced level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is primarily responsible for the impairment of nitric oxide (NO)-mediated regulation of arteriolar wall shear stress (WSS) in hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). Thus flow/WSS-induced dilations of pressurized gracilis muscle arterioles (basal diameter: approximately 170 microm) isolated from control (serum Hcy: 6 +/- 1 microM), methionine diet-induced HHcy rats (4 wk, serum Hcy: 30 +/- 6 microM), and HHcy rats treated with vitamin C, a known antioxidant (4 wk, 150 mg. kg body wt-1.day-1; serum Hcy: 32 +/- 10 micro

Developmental expression of Pax1/9 genes in urochordate and hemichordate gills: insight into function and evolution of the pharyngeal epithelium.

The epithelium of the pharynx contributes to the formation of gills in hemichordates, urochordates, cephalochordates and primitive vertebrates, and is therefore a key structure for understanding developmental mechanisms underlying the establishment of chordate body plans. Pax1- and Pax9-related genes encode transcription factors which are expressed in the pharyngeal region of cephalochordates as well as in the vertebrate pharyngeal pouch epithelium that forms the thymus and parathyroid glands. To explore the molecular basis underlying the occurrence and modifications of the pharyngeal epitheli…

Concurrent analysis of histomorphology and immune-related gene expression in gills of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from recirculating aquaculture systems.

Gill health is crucial in aquaculture but remains difficult to define because the gills are dynamic organs with nonspecific responses to environmental and biological stressors. This descriptive, exploratory study examined histological changes and gene expression patterns in selected apparently healthy Atlantic salmon from two commercial recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), encompassing freshwater and saltwater production phases. The two systems also differed in facility, fish size, and life stage. Using a semiquantitative histology scoring system and RT-qPCR, we assessed associations betwe…
