A critical view of the global health emergencies: the 2016 zika epidemic case.

The study of global health agenda-setting and issue-prioritization has been one of the key aspects of a critical literature that, in recent years, has aimed to identify the political dimensions of global health governance and to shed light on points of tension, exclusion, and inequality. This essay speaks to this critical global health literature, focusing on the construction of the category of emergencies of international concern. Considering the case of the outbreak of zika and congenital syndrome in Brazil in 2016, it explores the conditions enabling the construction of an emergency. We que…

The impact of air pollution and climate change on eye health: a global review.

Climate change has important implications on human health, affecting almost every system in the body. Multiple studies have raised the possibility of climate change impacting eye health. In this review, we aimed to summarize current literature on the impact of air pollution and climate change on eye health. We performed a search in four different databases, including Medline, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Sciences databases. The search strategy combined terms regarding eye health and environmental/climate changes. The outcome of interest included all eye conditions. The search yielded 2,051 uni

Travel in the Time of COVID: A Review of International Travel Health in a Global Pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the high frequency of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, the relation between work conditions and ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow has not been the object of much research. In the present study, the predictive factors for such ulnar nerve entrapment were determined in a 3-year prospective survey of upper-limb work-related musculoskeletal disorders in repetitive work. METHODS: In 1993-1994 and 3 years later, 598 workers whose jobs involved repetitive work underwent an examination by their occupational health physicians and completed a self-administered questionnaire

Mutual Capacity Building to Reduce the Behavioral Health Treatment Gap Globally.

Use of lay health workers for the treatment of common mental disorders is an expanding, yet still underutilized, opportunity for closing the behavioral health treatment gap globally. In this commentary, we describe how "mutual capacity building," an equal exchange of ideas between low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs) to promote shared learning, could promote the development and scale-up of therapies using lay health workers. We propose ways that task sharing models for behavioral health can inform and be supported by bidirectional learning across HICs and LM

The Need for Antiviral Drugs for Pandemic Coronaviruses From a Global Health Perspective.

Respiratory failure due to SARS-CoV-2 has caused widespread mortality, creating an urgent need for effective treatments and a long-term need for antivirals for future emergent coronaviruses. Pharmacotherapy for respiratory viruses has largely been unsuccessful with the exception of early treatment of influenza viruses, which shortens symptom duration and prevents infection in close contacts. Under the rapidly evolving circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, most clinical trials of experimental treatments in the United States have focused on later stages of the disease process. Worldwide, the c

Weak surveillance and policy attention to cancer in global health: the example of Mozambique.

Cancer is an emerging public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa due to population growth, ageing and westernisation of lifestyles. The increasing burden of cancer calls for urgent policy attention to develop cancer prevention and control programmes. Cancer surveillance is an essential prerequisite. Only one in five low-income and middle-income countries have the necessary data to drive policy and reduce the cancer burden. In this piece, we use data from Mozambique over a 50-year period to illustrate cancer epidemiological trends in low-income and middle-income countries to hypothesise potent

Importance of genetic testing in global health during the evaluation of familial microcephaly.

A focused genetic workup is useful in determining the cause of familial microcephaly, especially in the setting of mildly different phenotypes. As illustrated by this case from an impoverished international urban location, one must not assume the etiology for the apparent familial microcephaly is the same for all affected members.

Global health and orthopaedic surgery-A call for international morbidity and mortality conferences.

INTRODUCTION: There is a large discrepancy between supply and demand of surgical services in developing countries. This inequality holds true in orthopaedic surgery and the delivery of musculoskeletal care. Intertwined amongst the decision to perform surgical procedures in the developing world are the ethics of doing so - just because one is capable of performing a procedure, should it be done? PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 31 year-old female with end-stage joint destruction underwent a left total hip replacement by a foreign orthopaedic team in Tanzania. She had a favorable outcome for 8 months, b

[Children environmental health--Polish epidemiological publications in the global literature on the topic].

Environmental hazards in children are subject to many research programs and public health priority, also in Poland. Assessment of the publication output in this field can be used to evaluate the level of general scientific activity in epidemiology. "Medline"-based review (topic: environmental exposure) showed that in the examined period the percentage of Polish publications concerning children aged 0-18 years reached 1,67%, and a half of the articles was published in English. Following the period of a visible increase in annual numbers of Polish publications two recent years revealed a marked

[Global eradication of poliomyelitis. On the 80th anniversary of the founding of the National Institute of Health].

Global eradication of poliomyelitis launched and coordinated by the World Health Organization since 1988 is close to being achieved: the main objective is to discontinue the circulation of the wild, neurovirulent, endemic virus of poliomyelitis. Although this objective has been within the reach, there are two other risks, lower but existing and posing possible threat to the eradication, that need to be controlled: 1) wild polioviruses stored in laboratories should be destroyed or reliably contained and 2) emergence and epidemic role of neurovirulent polioviruses potentially derived from attenu

Global Partnership to Stop TB: a model of an effective public health partnership.

SETTING: The Global Partnership to Stop TB. OBJECTIVE: To describe the need for a partnership, its development, its aims and how it goes about its business. RESULT: The international health community finds itself working under new constraints and in the presence of new actors and opportunities, including globalisation, economic and cultural changes, lack of resources, and the need for intersectoral collaboration. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared tuberculosis a global emergency in 1993. However, political commitment to controlling the growing pandemic was lacking, and TB continued

Addressing the burden of violence on global mental health: contributions of Narrative Exposure Therapy across different health systems.

Post-traumatic stress disorder represents a substantial global mental health burden, particularly in the face of cumulative violence, forced migration, and structural inequities. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) configures a brief trauma-focused intervention that supports the reconstruction of autobiographical memory by the chronological narration of life events. By integrating fragmented traumatic experiences into a coherent narrative, NET facilitates emotional processing and restores continuity to disrupted life stories. This regional case series examines the integration of NET into the ment

Sand and dust storms: a growing global health threat calls for international health studies to support policy action.

Sand and dust storms increasingly threaten global environmental and public health. To date, 150 countries are directly affected, with more than 100 classified as non-dust source regions. With climate change, these storms are expected to become more frequent and severe. Despite international awareness and initiatives, such as those led by the UN, crucial knowledge gaps continue to hinder effective, evidence-based public responses to sand and dust storms. In this Viewpoint, we review existing gaps in health research and highlight four key research priorities: the comprehensive health effects of

Estimating global water, sanitation, and hygiene levels and related risks on human health, using global indicators data from 1990 to 2020.

Water quality improvement, sanitation, and hygiene have been demonstrated to have positive impacts on health, social, and economic development. However, global understanding of water quality, sanitation, and hygiene is limited. The study extracted data from the Joint Monitoring Programme (WHO/UNICEF) and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) to estimate global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) levels. Statistical tools of univariate and multivariate analyses were used to process global access to WASH. Results show that men (53%) had access to safe water compared to women. Women (67%), o
