Obstructive sleep apnoea is a relatively common sleep disorder that is popularly associated with snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. It is a disorder with serious implications that has only in the last two decades received the attention of clinical specialists. The aim of this article is to review the role of the dental profession in the recognition and management of this disorder.

The oral ability to recognize forms and oral motor ability were studied by means of two specific tests in 27 subjects, 10 to 23 years of age, before and after tongue reduction because of macroglossia. Recordings were made before and 6 and 12 months after the operation. At the same time the natural position of the head and of the cervical column, the craniocervical relation, the position of the tongue and the hyoid bone, and the rest position of the mandible were studied with profile roentgen-cephalometry. The surgical reduction of the tongue had a minor influence on the subject's performance i

In 1963 Beckwith and Wiedemann reported a syndrome, which was characterized by umbilical hernia, macroglossia and somatic gigantism. In the literature, early intervention by tongue reduction is recommended in order to prevent both mandibular prognathism and open bite. In this paper seven cases were presented showing that early functional treatment of the stomatognatic system leads to pleasing results, both functionally and aesthetically. Therefore it is suggested, that functional treatment should replace surgical management of macroglossia in the Beckwith-Wiedemann-syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of tongue defects following oncologic resection remains a clinical challenge, requiring both functional and aesth … patients with extensive tongue leukoplakia, who did not require neck dissection, underwent partial glossectomy followed by immediate reconstruction using LAFF. Vascular anastomoses were performed intraorally between the flap pedicle and the lingual artery and deep lingual vein, eliminating the need for cervical incisions.
RESULTS: Both flaps survived withou …

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the correlation between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters and tumor pathological depth of invasion (pDOI), between pDOI and radiological DOI (rDOI), between rDOI and duration between biopsy and MRI, and between rDOI and duration between MRI and surgery to determine the efficacy of rDOI in identifying small lesions and other conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: We examined 36 adult patients who had been diagnosed histopathologically with cancer of the tongue and had undergone a glossectomy. Using 1.5 Tesla (T) and 3.0T MRI, we measured rDOI at the deepest infiltratio…

Diadochokinetic rate has traditionally been used for assessment, diagnosis and therapy in patients who suffered from oral cancer resection, glossectomy, oral myofunctional disease, dysphagia, dysarthria, functional articulation disorders or apraxia of speech. This is because diadochokinetic rate shows the documented structural and physiological changes in the central nervous system and the peripheral components of oral and speech production mechanism. Diadochokinetic rates were obtained from seventy-six normal subjects by counting the repetition of oral function (/a:-u:/; /u:-i:/; and /i:-a:/)…

PURPOSE: Considerable number of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) failed to respond to positive airway pressure therapy and so turned to surgical procedures. A wide variety of surgical procedures have been developed and advanced, according to obstruction and target site through nasal cavity to trachea. We introduced our overlapping lateral pharyngoplasty (OLP) technique as a surgical option for OSA and evaluated its surgical outcomes both with and without endoscope-guided coblator tongue base resection (CobTBR).
METHODS: Sixty-five patients underwent either OLP alone or OLP combined

Carcinomas of the tongue constitute approximately 5% to 10% of oral carcinomas. Rehabilitation of these patients postsurgery is challenging because the motor control of the tongue is lost and postsurgical scarring reduces the vestibular depth needed to support and retain a denture. Implant-supported overdentures are a viable option to rehabilitate such patients. The restoration provides enhanced function and wearer comfort.

We tested the sensitivity of taste after reduction of the tongue in four girls with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. No patient had taste blindness, but the ability to detect salty and bitter tastes declined after reduction of the tongue.

The use of computerized techniques to assist in the design of palatal and/or glossal prostheses is described. Patients with oropharyngeal resection and associated speech impairment are candidates for such prostheses. Procedures discussed allow for the design of some features of the prosthesis, such as shape, location, and tests of its effect on certain speech parameters, prior to actual fabrication. Advantages and current limitations of the techniques are also discussed.

The tongue is as an organ of speech and articulation not as indispensable as the soft palate. The recovery of speech after extirpation of the tongue is usually satisfactory, and the intelligibility of patients with microglossia compares favourably with the speech of an untreated cleft palate patient. Hypernasality and nasal escape of air are typical also for the congenital short palate (in the absence of a cleft); syndromes with a congenital short palate are often misdiagnosed as suprabulbar paralysis. The function and involuntary usage of the tongue e.g. in swallowing, influence the growth an
