This is the first molecular characterization of a female XY patient with an Xp duplication due to an X;22 translocation. Array CGH detected a copy number gain of ∼36 Mb in the Xp22.33p21.1 region involving 150 genes. Clinical and molecular studies described in the literature have suggested DAX1 duplication as the major cause responsible for a sex reversal phenotype. Additionally, the interaction between genes and their possible role in clinical features are presented to support the discussion on genotype-phenotype correlation in cases of syndromic XY gonadal dysgenesis.

This review provides an outline of how our understanding of the neuroendocrine control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis has evolved since the publication of Geoffrey Harris' renowned monograph in 1955. BACKGROUND: Hypogonadism occurs in myotonic dystrophies type 1 (MD1) and type 2 (MD2). Sertoli and Leydig cell secretions, including insulin-like peptide-3 (INSL3), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B, were evaluated in male patients with MD.
DESIGN: Academic settings. Forty-four male patients with MD [31 MD1, 13 MD2, aged 59 (50-64) years, median (interquartile range)], age-, sex- and BMI-matched non-MD hypogonadal patients (n = 14) and healthy controls (n = 32). Serum FSH, LH, inhibin B, AMH, testosterone (T) and INSL3 were measured; fat and muscle masses were evaluated by DEXA.

Some environmental factors may influence the pituitary-gonadal function. Among these, light plays an important role in animals and in humans. The effect of light on the endocrine system is mediated by the pineal gland, through the modulation of melatonin secretion. In fact, melatonin secretion is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light, thus its circadian rhythm peaks at night. Light plays a favorable action on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis likely inhibiting melatonin secretion, while the exogenous melatonin administration does not seem to impair the hormonal secretions of this axis.
