Photoswitchable Antibiotic Hybrids: Spacer Length-Dependent Photochemical Control of Antibacterial Activity.

Photopharmacology holds huge potential for the permanent (long-term) eradication of antibiotic resistance by the application of photoswitcha … potent than its nonirradiated state without losing much antimicrobial activity of norfloxacin. Only Gram-positive bacteria were found to be sensitive to this hybrid, and the full antibacterial potency of its irradiated state was found to be retained for nearly 24 h.

Quinupristin/dalfopristin: a review of its use in the management of serious gram-positive infections.

UNLABELLED: Quinupristin/dalfopristin is the first parenteral streptogramin antibacterial agent, and is a 30:70 (w/w) ratio of 2 semisynthetic pristinamycin derivatives. The combination has inhibitory activity against a broad range of gram-positive bacteria including methicillin-resistant staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF), drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, other streptococci, Clostridium perfringens and Peptostreptococcus spp. The combination also has good activity against selected gram-negative respiratory tract pathogens including Moraxella catarrhalis, L…

Serologic prevalence of amoeba-associated microorganisms in intensive care unit pneumonia patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to intensive care units are frequently exposed to pathogenic microorganisms present in their environment. Exposure to these microbes may lead to the development of hospital-acquired infections that complicate the illness and may be fatal. Amoeba-associated microorganisms (AAMs) are frequently isolated from hospital water networks and are reported to be associated to cases of community and hospital-acquired pneumonia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used a multiplexed immunofluorescence assay to test for the presence of antibodies against AAMs in sera of intens

Occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from diagnostic samples from dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To study the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance among common bacterial pathogens from dogs and relate resistance patterns to data on consumption of antimicrobials. METHODS: The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 201 Staphylococcus intermedius, 37 Streptococcus canis, 39 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 25 Pasteurella multocida, 29 Proteus spp. and 449 Escherichia coli isolates from clinical submissions from dogs were determined by a broth-dilution method for determination of minimal inhibitory concentration. Data for consumption of antimicrobials were retrieved from VetStat, a na

Direct susceptibility testing of positive blood cultures by using Sensititre broth microdilution plates.

Traditional susceptibility testing of blood cultures requires overnight incubation in order to obtain isolated colonies. Susceptibility results can be reported up to 24 h sooner by using a bacterial pellet from the blood culture broth. This study evaluated the accuracy of direct susceptibility testing from positive ESP blood culture broths by using Sensititre broth microdilution plates compared to testing with isolated colonies. Practical inclusion criteria were applied to gram-positive organisms to avoid reporting susceptibilities for probable contaminants. All gram-negative organisms were te

Comparative in vitro activity of gemifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and ofloxacin in a North American surveillance study.

The in vitro activity of gemifloxacin, a new fluoroquinolone, was compared to three marketed fluoroquinolones; ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and ofloxacin against over 4,000 recent clinical isolates covering 29 species isolated in the United States and Canada between 1997-1999. Based on MIC(90)s, gemifloxacin was the most potent fluoroquinolone tested against a majority of Gram-positive isolates: Streptococcus pneumoniae, penicillin resistant S. pneumoniae, macrolide resistant S. pneumoniae, ciprofloxacin non-susceptible (MIC > or = 4 microg/mL) S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae, viridan

Use of the isolator 1.5 microbial tube for culture of synovial fluid from patients with septic arthritis.

Synovial fluid specimens obtained from patients with arthritis were plated onto solid media (conventional cultures) or inoculated into an Isolator 1.5 microbial tube (Isolator cultures), and the yield and time to detection of organisms were compared. Overall, 144 specimens obtained from 137 patients were processed, and 31 (21.5%) cultures obtained from 29 patients were positive by at least one method. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 12 patients, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Kingella kingae were isolated from 4 patients each, group G streptococci were isolated from 3 patients, Staphyloc

Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance and its clinical implications in Ethiopia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major public health challenges in Ethiopia. However, there is no comprehensive summary of … lood (21%). All the studies were cross-sectional and 83% were conducted in hospital settings. Among Gram-positive bacteria, the reported level of resistance to vancomycin ranged from 8% (Enterococcus species) to 20% (S. aureus). E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa were the most common Gram-negative pathogens resistant to key antimicrobial agents described in the na …

Conjunctival bacterial flora and antimicrobial susceptibility of captive and free-living sea turtles in Brazil.

PURPOSE: To describe the aerobic conjunctival bacterial flora of 3 especies of free-living and under human care sea turtles and determine it … tive animals. There were 94 strains isolated and 15 species identified. There was a predominance of Gram-positive bacteria in free-living Chelonia mydas, most of which were Bacillus and Staphylococcus. The most commonly isolated Gram-negative species were enterobacteria for free-living and under human care animals. The strains were predominantly sensitive to ciprofloxac …
