OBJECTIVE: To assess the therapeutic effect of G-CSF in newborns with neutropenia.
METHODS: Newborn with evidence of both peripheral neutropenia and decreased granulocytic precursors in tibial bone marrow aspirate were included in the study. G-CSF was perfused intravenously over 2 hours at dose of 10 micrograms/kg/day, during 4-8 days. CBC were obtained immediately before each dose of G-CSF.

We present two patients who developed Sweet's syndrome (SS) during recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of sulfasalazine-induced agranulocytosis that was successfully treated with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).
CASE SUMMARY: An 82-year-old woman developed agranulocytosis within two months of initiating sulfasalazine therapy. She was hospitalized, empiric antibiotic and antifungal agents were prescribed, and sulfasalazine therapy was stopped. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of granulocyte-associated immunoglobulins (GA-IgG) during the follow-up of asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects. An increase in GA-IgG was detected in 32 asymptomatic HIV seropositive subjects by a granulocyte immunofluorescence test (GIFT). At study onset, 7 (21.8%) had a positive GIFT. The prevalence of positive GIFT increased with time in the study subjects. No neutropenia was found. The production of neutrophil granulocytes is a complex and dynamic process during which a small number of self-renewing stem cells give rise to lineage-specific progenitors. One hematopoietic glycoprotein that appears to specifically control the survival, cycle activation, proliferation and terminal maturation of this myeloid lineage is granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The Boyden chamber technique, the NBT reduction and Candida killing test were carried out on 51 patients with recurrent erysipelas to investigate the non-specific immune response. A statistically significant difference was not observed between the patients and the controls. It is suggested, that the infected individual is not able to increase his resistance via the more effective functioning of the non-specific line, which in effect promotes the possibly multiple occurrence of the disease.

A 57-year-old patient with chronic granulocytic leukemia in blast crisis and severe neutropenia is presented. This patient developed right sided peritonitis due to an isolated transmural granulocytic sarcoma of the terminal ileum. The affected segment was resected and the patient survived 4 more months. Thus, despite neutropenia, an aggressive surgical approach should be considered in a leukemic patient presenting with unexplained acute abdomen, since, as demonstrated here, a localized lesion which could not have otherwise been detected, was ultimately found and promptly resected.

It is well known that the serum of SLE patients contain anti-lymphocyte antibodies (ALA). In this paper we present a new rosette-forming assay for investigation of ALA. Granulocytic sarcoma (chloroma), a rare tumor usually associated with myelogenous leukemia, is capable of invading the meninges or brain parenchyma. Radiologic findings in a case of granulocytic sarcoma of the brain, as well as those in 11 previously reported cases of intracranial leukemic masses, are interpreted. On computed tomographic scans, the lesions can appear isodense or hyperdense, edema and necrosis are variable, and there is uniform enhancement following intravenous administration of contrast material.
