The zebrafish pineal organ is a photoreceptive structure containing two main neuronal populations (photoreceptors and projections neurons). A 55-year old woman was seen at the outpatient Dermatology department with orange-red, soft-elastic, asymptomatic papules on her abdomen since five years. A biopsy was positive for Congo-red staining and showed apple-green under bipolarized light. Laboratory work-up showed no systematic amyloidosis. We diagnosed it as primary nodular cutaneous amyloidosis.

Photoreceptor-mediated mechanisms were studied in patients with a recently identified retinopathy typified by night blindness, cystoid maculopathy, and similar scotopic and photopic electroretinograms (ERGs). PURPOSE: The emulsification of silicone oil (SO) remains poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the physical properties of unused pharmaceutical SO samples under various conditions. Moreover, clinical correlations with the patients' SO samples were assessed.
METHODS: Unused pharmaceutical ophthalmic SO samples and four explanted SO samples from previously vitrectomized patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were analyzed.
