An intervention improving prescribing practices and monitoring drugs availability in a district.

To improve the quality of health care in Nepal, supervision/ monitoring involving periodic visits by the district supervisor to health facilities (top-down approach) is in practice. It is not objectively implemented because of time and financial constraints and terrain of the country. To assess the effectiveness of a pre-tested strategy i.e. peer-group discussion with self-assessment piloted through the district health system in improving quality of care. A pre-post pilot study was conducted in 41 PHC facilities of Chitwan district of Central Nepal. The intervention included small-group traini

Tobacco treatment specialists' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about lung cancer screening: Potential piece of the puzzle for increasing lung cancer screening awareness.

OBJECTIVES: Less than 5% of eligible U.S. individuals undergo lung cancer screening (LCS). A significant barrier is lack of awareness; more effective outreach and education strategies are needed to achieve greater population LCS uptake. Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTSs) are an untapped resource to assist and understanding TTS knowledge and perspectives about LCS and readiness and capacity to assist is a critical first step. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was conducted to understand LCS knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices of TTSs. A cross-sectional sur

Awareness, knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes towards genetic testing for cancer risk among ethnic minority groups: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Genetic testing for risk of hereditary cancer can help patients to make important decisions about prevention or early detection. US and UK studies show that people from ethnic minority groups are less likely to receive genetic testing. It is important to understand various groups' awareness of genetic testing and its acceptability to avoid further disparities in health care. This review aims to identify and detail awareness, knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes towards genetic counselling/testing for cancer risk prediction in ethnic minority groups. METHODS: A search was carried

Smoking cessation among transit workers: beliefs and perceptions among an at-risk occupational group.

BACKGROUND: Transit workers, in comparison to the general population, have higher rates of smoking. Although smoking cessation programs are often available through workers' HMOs, these programs are frequently underutilized. Quitting practices, including participation in cessation programs, are often associated with beliefs about smoking behaviors and the ability to quit. We analyzed how transit workers' beliefs about cessation might function as barriers to or facilitators of participating in cessation activities. FINDINGS: We conducted 11 focus group discussions with 71 workers (45% female; 8

Repetition, response mobilization, and face: Analysis of group interactions with a 19-year-old with Asperger syndrome.

UNLABELLED: This Conversation Analytic study examined the talk of an adolescent with Asperger syndrome (under previously used diagnostic criteria), Nathan, as he interacts with peers in a small group setting. We focused on Nathan's repetition aimed at pursuing response, and rely on analytical frameworks including response mobilization, face-work, and agreement preference. We found that while Nathan's repetitions resembled 'topic perseveration' previously described in the literature, they showed evidence of interactional awareness as they were employed when peers offered little or no response t

Providing online support for young people with mental health difficulties: challenges and opportunities explored.

Despite its growing popularity there is a paucity of information exploring the potential of the Internet to build a trusted community that helps reduce stigma, facilitates help-seeking and aids in the prevention or helps in the management of mental health difficulties for young people. Unsupervised online forums or chat rooms hold potential dangers for young people including the possibility of attracting adults who may take advantage of vulnerable adolescents. Contagion with members organizing suicide pacts, or describing suicidal or self-harming intentions and methods and young people ruminat

Conducting focus groups for health research among Asian communities: insights and experiences.

An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken in Luton to examine the issues that may underlie the severe shortage of organ donors from the United Kingdom's (UK) Asian population. To date, this subject area had not been researched within this sub-population of the UK. Thus, focus groups were employed as the initial stage of research to pre-test the applicability and validity of questions used in empirical studies undertaken within other cultural groups, and to allow the opportunity for new and unexpected issues to emerge. These focus groups also allowed us to gauge the response of conducting

Factors influencing implementation of an Alzheimer's disease blood test among UK old age psychiatrists: mixed-methods study using the theoretical domains framework.

INTRODUCTION: Only 6% of UK memory services meet Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarker access guidelines, limiting psychiatrists' experience. Emerging AD blood biomarker (BBM) tests will potentially expand access. Exploring implementation barriers and enablers a priori can inform rollout strategies. This study examined current clinical practises, barriers and enablers to implementation and potential interventions to support implementation. METHODS: In November 2024, Royal College of Psychiatrists Old Age Psychiatry Faculty members (n = 172) participated in an online survey and four focus groups

[Aspects of rehabilitation in HIV and AIDS].

Medical treatment of HIV infection has changed dramatically since 1997. The uncontrollable threat became a chronic disease. On the other hand, many HIV-infected people suffer from high psychological distress and multiple physical complaints. Interaction in HIV prevention could transform into psychological counseling. Counselors should initiate rehabilitation measures and occupational reintegration by utilizing all legal possibilities for handicapped people. Patients and physicians, psychologists and social workers as well as self-help groups should initiate successful reintegration into the wo

Menstrual irregularity from hormonal contraception: a cause of reproductive health concerns in minority adolescent young women.

CONTEXT: Adolescents are frequent users of hormonal contraception (HC), yet their adherence to these methods is often poor. Concerns about side effects, especially those affecting the menstrual system, are often given as reasons for contraceptive nonadherence or discontinuation. We sought to identify teens' concerns and misperceptions about the menstrual-related side effects of HC. METHODS: Open focus groups were conducted with both sexually active and virgin adolescent women aged 12-18 years who were recruited from the Philadelphia area. The adolescents did not have to be contraceptive users

Bespoke to the patient: a qualitative study on learning to manage multimorbidity in family medicine.

INTRODUCTION: The rising prevalence of multimorbidity poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems. However, medical education predominantly emphasizes single-disease frameworks, offering limited guidance on how learners can navigate the complexities of managing co-existing health conditions. Given the high incidence of multimorbidity in family medicine, this study aimed to explore the experiences of family medicine residents in managing multimorbidity, with the goal of informing curriculum development. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study comprising four focus groups (mean durati

Are Clinical Practice Guidelines Representative of Patients With Distal Radius Fractures? A Review of Patient Demographics and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Used to Inform Guidelines.

PURPOSE: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are recommendations developed for broad application to optimize high-quality care and decision-making. The composition of patients and outcome measures used in studies informing CPGs; however, has not been rigorously evaluated. With growing evidence that outcomes in musculoskeletal surgery vary by sociocultural factors, we aimed to: (1) review the linguistic, racial, and ethnic representation of the patients in the studies informing CPGs for distal radius fractures and (2) assess their use of linguistically and culturally adapted patient-reported ou

"It Will Lead You to Make Better Decisions about Your Health"-A Focus Group and Survey Study on Women's Attitudes towards Risk-Based Breast Cancer Screening and Personalised Risk Assessments.

Singapore launched a population-based organised mammography screening (MAM) programme in 2002. However, uptake is low. A better understanding of breast cancer (BC) risk factors has generated interest in shifting from a one-size-fits-all to a risk-based screening approach. However, public acceptability of the change is lacking. Focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted with 54 women (median age 37.5 years) with no BC history. Eight online sessions were transcribed, coded, and thematically analysed. Additionally, we surveyed 993 participants in a risk-based MAM study on how they felt in antic
