PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The craniofacial region hosts a variety of stem cells, all isolated from different sources of bone and cartilage. However, despite scientific advancements, their role in tissue development and regeneration is not entirely understood. The goal of this review is to discuss recent advances in stem cell tracking methods and how these can be advantageously used to understand oro-facial tissue development and regeneration.
RECENT FINDINGS: Stem cell tracking methods have gained importance in recent times, mainly with the introduction of several molecular imaging techniques, like

A novel approach of making a biomimetic nerve conduit was established by seeding adipose-derived adult stem cells (ADSCs) on the external wall of porous poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PLA) nerve conduits. The PLA conduits were fabricated using gas foaming salt and solvent-nonsolvent phase conversion. We examined the effect of two different porous structures (GS and GL) on ADSC growth and proliferation. The GS conduits had better structural stability, permeability, and porosity, as well as better cell viability at 4, 7, and 10 days. The epineurial-like tissue was grown from ADSC-seeded conduits culture

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral nerve injuries comprise significant portion of the nervous system injuries. Although peripheral nerves show some capacity of regeneration after injury, but the extent of regeneration is not remarkable. Regeneration might be through the activity of the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) which can release growth factors or extracellular matrix components or by the therapeutic effect of some material with the MSCs. The present study aimed to evaluate the regeneration of transected sciatic nerve by a therapeutic value of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) associated with chitosan-film

An increasing number of biomaterial nerve guides has been developed that await direct comparative testing with the 'gold-standard' autologous nerve graft in functional repair of peripheral nerve defects. In the present study, 20 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged with either a collagen-based micro-structured nerve guide (Perimaix) or an autologous nerve graft. Axons regenerated well into the Perimaix scaffold and, the majority of these axons grew across the 20 mm defect into the distal nerve segment. In fact, both the total axon number and the number of retrogradely traced somatosensory

Previously, we showed that undifferentiated bone marrow stromal cell (uBMSC) implantation and vessel insertion into a nerve conduit facilitated peripheral nerve regeneration in a rodent model. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of the uBMSC-laden vessel-containing conduit in repair of segmental nerve defects, using a canine model. Eight beagle dogs were used in this study. Thirty-millimeter ulnar nerve defects were repaired with the conduits (right forelimbs, n = 8) or autografts (left forelimbs, n = 7). In the conduit group, the ulnar artery was inserted into the l-lactide/ε-caprolac

The treatment of through-and-through human periapical lesions by barrier membrane techniques has not been reported in the periodontal literature. However, periodontists frequently perform this treatment. The authors present a case that demonstrates radiopacity after regeneration surgery of a human periapical transosseous mandibular defect, suggesting local bone regeneration. The surgical technique performed in this case was based on the principles of guided bone regeneration using a demineralized freeze-dried bone membrane (DFDBM). The bone membrane acted as an efficient barrier that excluded

1. Evidence is conclusive (Table 2) that periodontal regeneration in humans is possible following the use of bone grafts, guided tissue regeneration procedures, both without and in combination with bone grafts, and root demineralization procedures. 2. Clinically guided tissue regeneration procedures have demonstrated significant positive clinical change beyond that achieved with debridement alone in treating mandibular and maxillary (buccal only) Class II furcations. Similar data exist for intraosseous defects. Evidence suggests that the use of bone grafts or GTR procedures produce equal clini…

This article illustrates the potential benefits of regenerative periodontal therapy in mucogingival surgery and esthetic dental treatment. Cases are described in which the treatment of soft-tissue recessions and root exposures are treated with surgical procedures where both clinical soft-tissue augmentation and the regeneration of periodontal attachment are obtained. Cases are also presented to illustrate the clinical application of guided tissue regeneration. Resorbable and nonresorbable barriers are placed over the root surface and bone and covered by the overlying flap, which allows the sel…

Jaw bone defects impair oral function and facial aesthetics, reducing patients' quality of life. While significant progress has been achieved in systemic skeletal repair, jaw bone regeneration remains challenging due to its distinct biological and anatomical features compared with long bones. This article systematically traces the evolution of jaw bone regeneration from conventional guided bone regeneration to bioactive scaffold-based tissue engineering. Mechanism-driven strategies tailored for jaw bone regeneration under compromised bone microenvironment are also discussed, with a specific fo

Biologic scaffolds have become an integral part of surgical soft tissue reconstruction in recent years. The increased use of these materials can be partially attributed to poor long-term outcomes with synthetic products as well as the cost and morbidity associated with allografts and autografts. Bioscaffolds can augment natural healing processes of tendons and ligaments while providing additional structural support. Although these implants lack the mechanical strength of synthetics and other transplants, proper preparation can optimize their load-sharing capacity. This article presents methods
