Cytotoxicity testing of endodontic sealers: a new method.

The purpose of this study was to compare ISO standards versus a new technique for in vitro evaluation of cytotoxicity of root canal sealers. The cytotoxicity of AH Plus, Cortisomol, and Sealapex was first recorded according to ISO standards on L 929 fibroblasts by the MTT assay. In parallel, 30 single-rooted teeth were cut at the cementum enamel junction (CEJ), and the roots were prepared and sterilized before filling with the lateral condensation using one of three sealers (n = 10). The apexes of the roots were dipped into 1 ml of minimum essential medium for 1, 2, and 30 days renewing the me

Comparative Evaluation of Automated Retreatment Systems for Bioceramic Sealer Removal: An In Vitro Scanning Electron Microscopic Study.

BACKGROUND: Calcium silicate-based bioceramic sealers have gained widespread acceptance because of their excellent sealing ability and bioco … andibular premolars obturated with a calcium silicate-based bioceramic sealer and thermoplasticized gutta-percha. After standardized root canal preparation and obturation, the specimens were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 15) according to the retreatment system used: Neoendo Retreatment, ProTaper Universal Retreatment, and HyFlex Remover. Following …

Microscope-aided endodontic treatment of maxillary first premolars with three roots: a case series.

Maxillary premolars have a highly variable root canal morphology. However, the presence of three roots is a rare occurrence. This clinical article describes the unusual anatomy detected in maxillary premolars during routine endodontic treatment using microscope. The diagnosis and clinical management of maxillary first premolars with three roots and canals using radiographic interpretation, access cavity modification and visual enhancement with operative microscopes is discussed in the article.

Favorable response of an extensive periapical lesion to root canal treatment.

This article presents non-surgical resolution of an extensive periapical lesion of endodontic origin associated with the maxillary left lateral incisor. Clinical examination revealed an asymptomatic bony hard swelling confined to the palate, while radiographic analysis showed a lesion measuring 22 mm in diameter and nearly 389 mm(2) in area. Through apical patency, 4 ml of intracanal exudate was drained. After thorough biomechanical preparation, a calcium hydroxide/CPMC root canal dressing was applied and periodically renewed for 11 months. The exudate was eliminated at treatment onset and sig

Endodontic treatment of teeth associated with a large periapical lesion.

AIM: To report the healing of a large periapical lesion following non-surgical root canal treatment. SUMMARY: A 12-year-old male with a large periapical lesion around the apices of his mandibular incisors is described. The lesion formed after trauma to the mandibular anterior teeth 5 years previously. During root canal treatment, chlorhexidine gluconate was used for irrigation, and calcium hydroxide was used both for the intracanal dressing and as a base of the root canal sealer. Periapical healing was observed 3 months after obturation and continued at the 12-month review. Key learning point

Treatment of inflammatory external root resorption resulting from dental avulsion and pulp necrosis: clinical case report.

The aim of this case report was to present a treatment for severe inflammatory external root resorption. The condition developed due to the patient's neglect to seek adequate treatment following replantation of an avulsed maxillary left central incisor. Following diagnosis, treatment consisted of conventional endodontic therapy with calcium hydroxide dressings and definitive filling of the root canal after the resorption was controlled radiographically. A 24-month follow-up showed that the resorption process had stabilized and the patient was free of symptoms. Successful tooth replantation req

Surface Roughness and Bond Strength of PEEK Posts: Comparing Chemical, Mechanical, and Laser Methods.

AIMS: Assessing the effect of different surface pretreatments, that is, sulfuric acid (SA), air-particle abrasion (APA), Er, Cr: YSGG laser, and nonthermal plasma (NTP)on the push-out bond strength (PBS) and surface roughness (Ra) of Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) post bonded to canal dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty caries-free single-rooted premolars were selected and decoronated. Following access cavity preparation, the working length was standardized at 14 mm. Root canal treatment was completed, and post space preparation was carried out by removing 10 mm of gutta-percha using a Gates-…

Effects of Sodium Hypochlorite Concentration and Final Irrigation Protocol on Residual Filling Material in Retreated Oval Root Canals Obturated with a Calcium Silicate-Based Sealer: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study.

Background and Objectives: Residual filling material may persist on the walls of oval root canals after mechanical retreatment, and the infl … root and an oval canal were instrumented with Reciproc R25 and filled with CeraSeal and a matching gutta-percha cone using the single-cone technique. Root canal retreatment was performed using ProTaper Universal Retreatment instruments followed by Reciproc R40. The teeth were then distributed among 15 experimental subgroups according to the final irrigation p …

AIM: This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness and smear layer removal of Piper longum extract as a natural irrigant in ro … A (control), and group II was treated with P. longum extract (test). Irrigants were activated using gutta-percha cones. Samples were sectioned for SEM evaluation at coronal, middle, and apical regions. SEM imaging was performed at ×200 (debris) and ×1,000 (smear layer). The antimicrobial analysis was done by incubating a fresh suspension of microorganisms, and …

A multivariate analysis of the outcome of endodontic treatment.

In the present study, multivariate analyses were performed on clinical and treatment variables that may influence the outcome of endodontic treatment. Data collected in a previous clinical-radiographic follow-up study were used. Of 810 treated, 675 roots in 498 teeth were followed for 6 months to 4 yr. Of these, 192 (the CAP group) had pre-existing, chronic apical periodontitis and 483 (the NAP group) had not. Root canal treatment followed a standard procedure with one of three sealers chosen at random. Demographic, clinical and radiographic variables were recorded at the start of, and during

Fracture Resistance and Biomechanical Behavior of Retreated Teeth Obturated with Different Sealers: Combined Laboratory Testing and Finite Element Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the effect of different sealers on fracture resistance of retreated mandibular premolars and characterized their biomechanical behavior using three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: One hundred twenty-four single-rooted premolars were instrumented and initially obturated with AH Plus. Twelve teeth with intact fillings served as positive controls, and 12 retreated but unfilled teeth served as negative controls. The remaining samples were retreated and randomly assigned to 5 sealer groups (n = 20): AH Plus, GuttaFlow Bioseal, TotalFill BC, Bi

Reliability of the dye penetration studies.

The purpose of this study was to compare the classical dye-penetration method to a dye-extraction method, with a fluid-filtration method as control. Forty teeth were prepared with a ProFile device and divided into four groups (n = 10 per group) according to the sealer used for the lateral condensation: Pulp Canal Sealer, Sealapex, AH Plus, and Ketac-Endo. The apical seal was evaluated on the same teeth with all three methods, successively: a fluid-filtration method, a dye-penetration method with 2% methylene blue, and a new method where the roots were dissolved in 65% nitric acid to extract th

Labiomandibular paresthesia caused by endodontic treatment: an anatomic and clinical study.

Labiomandibular paresthesia after root canal treatment is an accident that is still too frequent despite the development of new endodontic techniques. The aim of this anatomical and clinical study is to advance the understanding of how accidents occur so as to avoid them. This anatomical study made it possible to determine the variability of proximity of the apex of the tooth root to the mandibular bundle, as well as the relationship between the nerve and its satellite artery, and to understand how endodontic filling material spreads into the cancellous bone. The clinical study, which included
