[Fitness and competitive sports in venous pathology].

Since chronic venous insufficiency is a constitutional disorder, the principles of healthy living can be of major importance in its prevention and treatment. Among these, the influence of physical activities has attracted the attention of the author, who has attempted to analyze the mechanisms of each sport in order to study its effects on the peripheral vessels. As a result of long terme comparative studies, he has been able to classify the various sports into two categories, the sports which are beneficial and those which are harmful in subjects with vulnerable veins. Into the first category

Bilateral patellar tendon reconstruction using LARS ligaments: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Acute bilateral patellar tendon rupture is a rare occurrence, with only 1 case reported in the English literature of a young, fit athlete with no regular medications. To our knowledge this is the first such case reported using a LARS reconstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old otherwise well ex-olympic gymnast with bilateral acute on chronic patellar tendon rupture underwent reconstruction using LARS ligaments. At four years post-operatively he has maintained full range of motion and strength, without re-rupture or any evidence of synovitis. CONCLUSION: The use of LARS ligam

[Therapy of postmenopausal osteoporosis].

The therapy of postmenopausal osteoporosis is based on a few comprehensible assumptions. High bone resorption should be reduced by treatment with bisphosphonates, raloxifene or seldom with calcitonins. After reduction of high bone turnover and in low bone turnover situations, an osteoinductive combination therapy should be started, inducing collagen type I with parathyroid hormone or fluorides. This collagen can then be mineralized by calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin D metabolites. In addition, bone resorption should be reduced during menopause with estrogens and gestagens, in the case of a rec

Quality of life and daily management of children with rheumatic disease.

Appropriate management of the daily life of patients with rheumatic diseases is an important part of therapy for favorable results and a high quality of life. At home, gymnastic exercise, night splints and appropriate fun activities will help to preserve the function of affected joints of patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Improvement of home fixtures according to patient disability will provide a higher quality of life for the patients. The patient should be helped to perform as many school activities as would normally be possible. Instructional charts for management of school

Management of osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the elbow including return to sport remains variable among orthopaedic surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Management of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the capitellum is challenging. Historically, variability exists between surgeons in the evaluation, treatment, and return to sport criteria. The purpose of this study was to define the current trends regarding evaluation, nonoperative and surgical management, and return to sport criteria for capitellar OCD lesions among surgeons. METHODS: A 21-question cross-sectional survey was administered to 24 Orthopaedic surgeons specializing in elbow OCDs. The survey included questions concerning imaging, specific non-operative treat

[Analysis of the effectiveness of various methods of rehabilitation of patients with subacromial impingement syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Subacromial impingement syndrome is a common pathology that leads to a persistent decrease in the functioning of the affected limb and, as a consequence, a decrease in the quality of life and work ability of patients. According to various authors, the study of the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation of this pathology is quite widely presented in the literature: surgical, including arthroscopic operations, rehabilitation using various factors of physical therapy, manual and other practices. However, the issue of assessing the effectiveness of movement therapy, both alone

[Accidents related to physical education in school: epidemiologic and preventive approach].

Generally speaking, this category of accidents seems to cause mostly relatively mild injuries. It could explain, at least in part, why there are so few papers on this topic in the medical literature except for clinical reports usually based on hospitalized cases. The main results of a study of the 9261 physical education accidents registered within five years in primary and secondary schools in Basle and Geneva are used to illustrate their epidemiological characteristics, as well as the localization and the severity of the injuries. The sources of data are the files of the accident insurance c

Skin Microbiome Overview: How Physical Activity Influences Bacteria.

The skin cannot be considered as just a barrier that protects against physical, chemical, and biological damage; it is a complex and dynamic ecosystem that varies across lifespans. Interest in the relationship between physical activity and skin microbiota has grown significantly in recent years. The skin microbiota has a crucial role in skin functions and physiology, and an imbalance, known as dysbiosis, is correlated with several diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infectious disease, obesity, allergic disorders, and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Among the causes of dysbiosis, the

Van Neck-Odelberg Disease: A Rare Cause of Pediatric Hip Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Synchondrosis ischiopubic syndrome (SIS), also known as Van Neck-Odelberg disease, is a benign skeletal abnormality in children due to delayed closure in the ischiopubic synchondrosis (IPS). Patients may present with vague groin, hip, or buttock pain that can cause limitation of hip movement or limp. Few descriptions of this disorder exist, and it can easily be mistaken for other pathologies, including stress fracture, osteomyelitis, or tumor. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 9-year-old female gymnast presenting with right hip pain who was diagnosed with SIS. She was managed

Lateral epicondylitis: New trends and challenges in treatment.

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a chronic aseptic inflammatory condition caused by repetitive microtrauma and excessive overload of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle. This is the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain syndrome in the elbow, inducing significant pain and limitation of the function of the upper limb. It affects approximately 1-3% of the population and is frequently seen in racquet sports and sports associated with functional overload of the elbow, such as tennis, squash, gymnastics, acrobatics, fitness, and weight lifting. Typewriters, artists, musicians, electricians,

Occult tethered cord syndrome: a reversible cause of paraparesis not to be missed.

A 15-year-old female former gymnast with a history of pectus excavatum was reviewed due to unexplained paraparesis and urinary incontinence since age 10. Symptoms were commenced with intolerable upper back pain and development of a soft mass at the sacrum that remitted spontaneously. Brain and whole spine MRI imaging and blood and CSF testing were normal. The combination of skeletal, neurological, and bladder symptoms with normal lumbar MRI and abnormal urodynamic and neurophysiological studies led to the clinical suspicion of occult tethered cord syndrome (oTCS). Surgical cord "untethering" w

Common athletic injuries in adolescent girls.

Teenaged girls constitute the fastest growing segment of children and adolescents participating in organized athletics. Adolescent girls appear to have similar injury rates as boys in comparable activities but different injury patterns. To properly diagnose and manage athletic injuries in adolescent girls, pediatric health care providers must be aware of these differences, especially as the literature and their knowledge base may be skewed to the traditional predominance of males in sport. This review identifies athletic injuries that are unique to or especially common in adolescent girls, inc

Sports injuries to the upper extremity. How to recognize and deal with some common problems.

Upper extremity syndromes caused by a single stress or by repetitive microtrauma occur in a variety of sports. The throwing motion, long-distance swimming, bowling, golf, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and field events can repetitively stress the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The biomechanical evaluation of racquet handling, throwing, and swimming motions has progressed considerably, and the future looks promising for better identification and prevention of sports injuries due to stress. These insights will help the physician more adequately understand and treat athletic injuries. As

The shoulder in sports.

Many sports activities that involve the upper extremity entail similar patterns of movement. Analysis of these activities, a better understanding of the throwing motion, and an awareness of shoulder diseases or injuries have led to a rational plan for investigation and management of shoulder problems. Evaluation often extends beyond the usual medical boundaries and must be based on information obtained from an analysis of sports mechanics, a review of training methods, and a physical examination directed at determination of flexibility, strength, endurance, and the presence of inflammation.
