The etiology of medically unexplained symptoms such as conversion disorder is poorly understood. This is partly because the interpretation of neuroimaging results in conversion paresis has been complicated by the use of different control groups, tasks and statistical comparisons. The present study includes these different aspects in a single data set. In our study we included both normal controls and feigners to control for conversion paresis. We studied both movement execution and imagery, and we contrasted both within-group and between-group activation. Moreover, to reveal hemisphere-specifi

The sudden onset, short duration and stereotyped features of panic attacks, and the fear aura of seizures starting at the mesial aspects of the temporal lobe, suggest common mechanisms underlying panic disorder (PD) and mesiotemporal epilepsy (MTLE). However, current consensus emphasizes the importance of differentiating the two entities based on 1) intact consciousness in panic attacks, 2) poor response to antiepileptics, and 3) unsuccessful electrophysiological attempts to demonstrate a relationship. We report two cases with a diagnosis of PD that had been partially responsive to first line

The von Economo neurons (VENs) are large bipolar neurons located in frontoinsular (FI) and anterior cingulate cortex in great apes and humans, but not other primates. We performed stereological counts of the VENs in FI and LA (limbic anterior, a component of anterior cingulate cortex) in great apes and in humans. The VENs are more numerous in humans than in apes, although one gorilla approached the lower end of the human range. We also examined the ontological development of the VENs in FI and LA in humans. The VENs first appear in small numbers in the 36th week post-conception, are rare at bi

Morphometric parameters of the neurons and macrogliocytes were studied in the interconnected antero-medial areas of the mesoaccumbocingulate dopaminergic system of 6 rats under normal conditions; these data may be important for the diagnosis and elucidating of the morphogenesis of addiction conditions. The spatial model of the system was obtained which took into account an average distance of frontal sections from the frontal pole. The density of neurons and gliocytes were determined in the middle part of the paranigral nucleus of ventral tegmental area (VTA) and in substantia nigra (SN) compa

Complementary neurophysiological recordings in macaques and functional neuroimaging in humans show that the primary taste cortex in the rostral insula and adjoining frontal operculum provides separate and combined representations of the taste, temperature, and texture (including viscosity and fat texture) of food in the mouth independently of hunger and thus of reward value and pleasantness. One synapse on, in the orbitofrontal cortex, these sensory inputs are for some neurons combined by learning with olfactory and visual inputs. Different neurons respond to different combinations, providing

Using a two-dimensional cell counting approach, a 1991 study in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACCx) detected a reduction in the density of nonpyramidal neurons in layers II-VI of schizophrenic subjects. Schizophrenics without superimposed mood disturbances showed a 16% decrease in layer II, while schizoaffectives showed a 30% decrease, suggesting that a decreased density of nonpyramidal neurons in layer II of ACCx might vary more strongly with affective disorder than with schizophrenia. Two follow-up studies from this laboratory, one a replication of that reported in 1991 and the other an ana

We reported a case of a 32-year-old female who had a transient mutism after resection of a malignant astrocytoma in the left frontal lobe. Preoperatively magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a cystic tumor in the left frontal lobe. The patient underwent surgery. She was alert but did not speak immediately after surgery. She could follow verbal commands, comprehend written language, and write letters. She had no cranial nerve or extremity paresis. Seven days postoperatively, she began to say simple words, and one month postoperatively she could talk normally. Postoperative MR imaging reveal

We studied the neuronal populations that project their axons to the cingulate cortex in albino rats using the retrograde fluorescent dye of 4% Fluoro-Gold injected into the anterior, middle and posterior portions of the cingulate cortex. The result showed that the following ipsilateral structures are sending fibers to these three portions: the prefrontal cortex, frontoparietal motor cortex, indusium griseum, dorsal endopiriform nucleus, lateral part of medial mammillary nucleus, nuclei of diagonal band of Broca, anterior pretectum, anterior part of caudate-putamen, hippocampal formation, anter

Controversies exist about the type of lesions observed in Korsakoff's syndrome or amnestic syndromes. A review of clinicopathologic data in the literature and findings in a personal series of 31 patients with amnestic syndromes (14 with alcoholism and nutritional deficiency, 8 with tumors including 2 with craniopharyngiomas, 5 with Pick's disease and presbyophrenic manifestations, 2 with vascular affections and one each with anoxia and herpetic encephalitis) were used to determine most frequently responsible lesions. Although it is generally accepted that there must be bilateral lesions diverg

107 patients suffering from axial dyskinesias (torticollis and torsion dystonia) were observed at our clinic over a period of 10 years. In 15 patients, stereotactic lesions involving the head-turning bundle at the caudatocapsular level, which mediates forced adversive movements, were performed. In 70% good to excellent results were confirmed. However, differences between forced adversive movements and torticollis were identified. There are striking motor and motivational similarities between torticollis and ritualized fixed action patterns of low-ranking subjects. The aetiology of axial dyskin

The brain's ability to consolidate a wide range of memories while maintaining their distinctiveness across experiences remains poorly understood. Sharp-wave ripples, neural oscillations that occur predominantly within CA1 of the hippocampus during immobility and sleep, have been shown to play a critical role in the consolidation process. More recently, evidence has uncovered functional heterogeneity of pyramidal neurons within distinct sublayers of CA1 that display unique properties during ripples, potentially contributing to memory specificity. Despite this, it remains unclear exactly how rip

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with gray matter (GM) reductions in regions linked to impaired fear extinction, yet reported patterns remain inconsistent. Furthermore, the impact of specific trauma characteristics on GM deficits is not well understood. We conducted a voxel-wise meta-analysis comparing structural brain differences in relational (interpersonal versus non-interpersonal) and temporal (acute versus chronic) aspects of trauma exposure.
METHODS: This meta-analysis included 32 voxel-based morphometry (VBM) neuroimaging studies of adults with PTSD, trau

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Maternal hypoxia is a recognised risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. Although rodent models of hypoxia have been reported, the detailed pathogenesis of maternal hypoxia-induced neurodevelopmental disorders remains unclear. The objectives of this study are to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying maternal hypoxia-related neurodevelopmental disorders and to identify new drug targets for these pathologies.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: A newly generated rat model exhibiting maternal hypoxia-induced neurodevelopmental disorder-like phenoty

Social isolation (SI) in rodents affects neuronal integrity and behavioral regulation. On the other hand, enriched environment (EE) has been reported to yield beneficial behavioral and neural effects in group-housed rodents. The midcingulate cortex (MCC) is a brain region that is increasingly implicated in socioemotional regulation; however, whether SI induces structural alterations in this region, and whether EE can mitigate such effects, remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the behavioral consequences of SI and the associated dendritic alterations in MCC pyramidal neurons. Furt

BACKGROUND: Expressive suppression is associated with rumination, but the cortical functional connectivity (FC) patterns characterizing this relationship remain unclear in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study examined associations among expressive suppression, rumination dimensions, and cortex-wide resting-state FC.
METHODS: A total of 228 adolescents aged 12-18 years with MDD were included. Expressive suppression and rumination were assessed using questionnaires, and cortex-wide resting-state FC was examined. Partial correlations were performed with covariate adjustme

Many studies in humans and rodents have shown that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays a critical role in the regulation of pain-related aversion and that the projection from the rostral ACC (rACC) to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is implicated in this modulation process. The ACC is also reported to be involved in the regulation of itch-scratch behavior. However, it remains unclear whether the ACC is involved in the modulation of the negative emotions induced by acute itch sensation. In this study, we investigated the pruritogen-induced conditioned place aversion (CPA) and itch-scratc

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hyperalgesia and hypersensitivity in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be related to central nervous system (CNS) changes, particularly in the pain pathways. The objective of this study was to examine the neuronal density of the cingulate cortex area (CC) and amygdala in an animal model of colitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experiment, 13 male Wistar rats were subjected to study. Colitis was induced in the rats by transrectally administering 1 cc of acetic acid 3% under sedation with xylazine 10% (5 mg/kg). After 14 days of colitis, the rats were euth
