Childhood lead poisoning. A controlled trial of the effect of dust-control measures on blood lead levels.

Lead-contaminated house dust is one factor in childhood lead poisoning; however, most lead-reduction programs do not emphasize the control of house dust. We studied whether lead-reduction plus dust-control measures would lower blood lead levels in children with Class II or III poisoning (blood lead levels, 30 to 49 micrograms per deciliter) more effectively than lead reduction alone. An experimental group of 14 children and a control group of 35 children whose homes had already been treated were studied. In experimental homes, sites with elevated lead levels (greater than 100 micrograms per 93

Prevalence and risk factors of hand eczema in hospital-based nurses in northern China.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hand eczema among nurses in northern China and to analyse associated risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective self-reported questionnaire was designed and distributed to 1322 nurses who were selected from three regional hospitals. Risk factors related to hand eczema in nurses were analysed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Hand eczema was present in 183/934 respondents (20%) and was not significantly associated with gender or workplace (P > 0.05). Factors such as the use of moisturiser (odds ratio [OR] 0.6; 9

Susceptibilities to antibiotics and antiseptics of new species of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

One hundred and sixty-nine strains of new species of the family Enterobacteriaceae, isolated mainly from the environment, were tested to determine their susceptibilities to 13 antibiotics and 4 antiseptics or disinfectants. All the species were susceptible to aminoglycosides, doxycycline, and trimethoprim but were resistant to chloramphenicol. Susceptibility to beta-lactams varied more among the strains. However, all the strains were cefotaxime susceptible, apart from some Buttiauxella agrestis strains for which MICs were greater than 256 micrograms/ml. The antiseptic MBCs were similar to thos

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Animal-assisted Activities for Pediatric Oncology Patients: Psychosocial and Microbial Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence about the effectiveness and safety of dog visits in pediatric oncology is limited. METHOD: We conducted a randomized controlled trial (n=26) of dog visits versus usual care among pediatric oncology inpatients. Psychological functioning and microbial load from hand wash samples were evaluated. Parental anxiety was a secondary outcome. RESULTS: We did not observe a difference in the adjusted mean present functioning score (-3.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], -12.4 to 6.4). The difference in microbial load on intervention versus control hands was -0.04 (95% CI, -0.60 to 0

Reduced Diarrhea Prevalence and Improvements in Handwashing with Soap and Stored Drinking Water Quality Associated with Diarrheal Disease Awareness Measured by Interactive Voice Response Messages in the CHoBI7 Mobile Health Program.

The Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7-Days (CHoBI7) mobile health program promotes water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) behaviors through interactive voice response (IVR), voice, and text messages to reduce diarrheal diseases in Bangladesh. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between responses to CHoBI7 WASH IVR quiz messages and subsequent diarrhea and WASH behaviors. Fourteen CHoBI7 IVR quiz messages on handwashing with soap and treatment of stored water were sent to 517 households with 1,777 participants during the 12-month program period. IVR message re

Obsessive-compulsive disorder reinforcement during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic is unquestionably impacting on the mental health of the population worldwide. Fear of contamination can both increase levels of stress in healthy individuals and intensify psychiatric symptoms in patients with pre-existing conditions, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the imminent risk of contamination creates a logical need for self-surveillance and hygiene habits. However, this kind of information can have drastic implications for subjects with OCD, since cognitive distortions and compensatory strategies (cleansing rituals) ar

Handwashing compliance depends on professional status.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial infections can be transmitted from microorganisms on the hands of health care workers to patients. Handwashing (HW) has a proven benefit in preventing transmission of infection, yet compliance with handwashing, especially in intensive care units, ranges between 28% and 74%. METHODS: To determine if HW behavior varies as a function of health care professional status and patient interaction, we conducted an observational study of a surgical intermediate care unit in a large university teaching hospital. HW compliance was observed among all health care workers (HCW): physi

A comparison of two methods of sterile urethral catheterisation in spinal cord injured adults.

The purpose of this study was to compare the incidence of urinary infection following sterile catheterisation after either (1) a handwash of 30 s and double gloving, (the shorter sterile technique) or (2) after a 3 minute wash from fingertips to elbows and the wearing of a sterile gown and one pair of gloves, (the longer sterile technique). Forty-six patients were randomly assigned to the two groups. No significant difference in urinary infection rates was found and as a result the more complicated technique has been discontinued.

An Investigation of Factors that Influence Hygiene Practices at a Small Day Care Center.

The aim of this study was to explore factors that influence hygiene practices at small day care centers. It examines the effect of food hygiene training on hygiene practices and investigates the correlations between the hygienic status of food handlers' hands and that of kitchen utensils. Furthermore, it determines the influences of demographic and facility-related factors on hygiene practices in small day care centers. A total of 56 food handlers at 49 day care centers in the Gyeongnam area of South Korea participated in hygiene training. The results of the study showed that after two trainin

[Multiresistant Organisms].

Infections caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) organisms are becoming more frequently in daily practice and are associated with an increase in duration of treatment and mortality. During the past decades, particular attention in the field of MDR pathogens was paid to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). For the last years, MDR gram-negative organisms, with e.g., "extended-spectrum beta-lactamases" (ESBL), have been gaining a growing significance. Currently, treatment of infections with these organisms displays a greater challenge for the clinician compared to MRSA infections. Th

Altered Epidermal Permeability Barrier Function in the Uninvolved Skin Supports a Role of Epidermal Dysfunction in the Pathogenesis of Occupational Hand Eczema.

Although a compromised epidermal permeability barrier can contribute to the development of contact dermatitis, whether subjects with hand eczema display abnormalities in baseline epidermal permeability barrier function in their uninvolved skin remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess epidermal permeability barrier function in subjects with and without hand eczema in clothing manufacturers. Upon approval by the institutional review board, volunteers were recruited from clothing manufacturers in Guangzhou City, China. An 11-item questionnaire was used to collect general data f

The need of an updated culture of "occupational" atopic hand dermatitis in children at the time of COVID-19.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, handwashing emerged as an essential tool to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can put into practice using warm water and soap or, if not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS). Anyway, the use of warm water and soap is not always possible. On the contrary, ABHS are frequently used for their versatility, but can represent a risk factor for atopic dermatitis exacerbations in the pediatric age. At the same time, the Italian Ministry of Health established a school regulation, asking the students to periodically disinfect hands with sanitizing gel, or

Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections by Monitoring the Cleanliness of Medical Devices and Other Critical Points in a Sterilization Service.

It is well known that the common goal of all central sterile supply departments (CSSDs) is to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Such infections entail high costs to society, not only economic but also social. Therefore, delivering safe medical devices and guaranteeing a positive contribution to the control of healthcare-associated infections form the main responsibilities of a CSSD. The monitoring of the effectiveness of medical device cleaning processes is highly recommended. However, ensuring a flawless environment for the preparation, assembly, and packaging of medical devices and c

A case of seal bite injury.

In Japan, seal habitats are limited, and no medical cases of seal bites have been reported. Therefore, we report a case of a seal bite. A 22-year-old female aquarium employee was bitten by a seal that reacted to a dog that was barking during feeding. She washed the wound at the scene for approximately 10 min before presenting to the hospital. A bite wound with tooth marks extending from the back of the right hand to the wrist and partially penetrating the subcutaneous tissue was observed. The wound was cleaned and disinfected, and the bite site was left open. Tetanus toxoid and amoxicillin/cla
