Effect of head orthoses on skull deformities in positional plagiocephaly: Evaluation of a 3-dimensional approach.

PURPOSE: The positional non-synostotic plagiocephaly represents a cranial asymmetry affecting all 3 dimensions. The aim of this study was to evaluate volumetric indices to assess the efficiency in improving non-synostotic cranial asymmetries in treatment with head orthoses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 96 infants were included in this observational retrospective study. The cohort was further divided into subgroups according to age of helmet supply (younger/older than 7.5 months) and duration of therapy (less/more than 150 days). With 3-dimensional photogrammetry data sets, the skull volum

Finite element simulation of head impacts in mixed martial arts.

Thirteen MMA athletes were fitted with the MiG2.0 Stanford instrumented mouthguard. 451 video confirmed impacts were recoded during sparring sessions and competitive events. The competitive events resulted in five concussions. The impact with the highest angular acceleration from each event was simulated using the GHBMC head model. Average strain in the corpus callosum of concussed fighters was 0.27, which was 87.9% higher than uninjured fighters and was the best strain indicator of concussion. The best overall predictor of concussion found in this study was shear stress in the corpus callosum

The biomechanics of concussion for ice hockey head impact events.

The purpose of this research was to conduct reconstructions of concussive and non-concussive impacts in ice hockey to determine the biomechanics and thresholds of concussive injury in ice hockey. Videos of concussive and non-concussive impacts in an elite professional ice hockey league in North America were reconstructed using physical and finite element model methods. Eighty concussive and 45 non-concussive events were studied. Logistic regressions indicate significant thresholds for concussion for linear/rotational acceleration and CSDM10%. Impacts in ice hockey were mostly long duration eve

Bicycle-Related Shoulder Injuries: Etiology and the Need for Protective Gear.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of bicycle riding for recreation, exercise and transportation has grown enormously in recent years, which has led to an increased incidence of bicycle-related injuries. While these injuries involve mainly the musculoskeletal system, data on shoulder-specific injuries incurred while bike riding are lacking. Classifying these shoulder injuries may provide insight and assistance in the creation and implementation of effective protective gear and measures. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the types and mechanisms of shoulder injuries among cyclists. METHODS: This study retro

The prevalence of crash risk factors in a population-based study of motorcycle riders.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcyclists represent an increasing proportion of road traffic casualties but, while factors associated with crashes are readily identifiable, little is known about the prevalence of those risk factors in the motorcycling population. METHOD: A stratified random-sampling frame was used to survey the population of registered motorcycles owners in New South Wales (NSW) when they attended motor registry offices. The postal codes in the State database of registered motorcycle were used to stratify the population into quartiles based on socioeconomic characteristics and to determine

Three-Dimensional Quantification of Facial Morphology and Movements Using a Wearable Helmet.

This work proposes a 3D normative database of facial ranges of motion in adults free from facial disorders. Ten facial movements were analyzed, each targeting the activity of specific muscle groups innervated by the facial nerve. The experimental protocol included a test-retest reliability positioning procedure of 25 skin markers based on clinical expertise in facial morphology. Three maximal voluntary contractions were recorded for each facial movement studied, using a 3D facial motion capture helmet. We included 53 adults free from facial disorders (26 men; age 43 ± 14), evaluated twice one

Treated Versus Untreated Positional Head Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Positional head deformity in early childhood is asserted to be a benign and in some cases spontaneously correcting entity encountered in craniofacial surgery. Although many authors have stated that helmet therapy is indicated in moderate and severe cases of deformational plagiocephaly and brachycephaly; others have reported resolution of these conditions within the first 2 to 3 years of life. A recent randomized controlled trial found that helmet therapy does not have beneficial effects for patients with positional head deformity. METHODS: The authors evaluated the clinical course

Firefighter uncompensable heat stress results in excessive upper body temperatures measured by infrared thermography: Implications for cooling strategies.

This research sought to evaluate the thermal zones of the upper body and firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE) immediately following uncompensable heat stress (0.03 °C increase/min). We hypothesized that the frontal portion of the head and the inside of the firefighter helmet would be the hottest as measured by infrared thermography. This hypothesis was due to previous research demonstrating that the head accounts for ∼8-10% of the body surface area, but it accounts for ∼20% of the overall body heat dissipation during moderate exercise. Twenty participants performed a 21-min graded t

Should children with a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt play rugby: a survey of UK and Ireland paediatric neurosurgeons.

BACKGROUND: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP) insertion is a common intervention in paediatric neurosurgery, and as outcomes for children with hydrocephalus improve, clinicians are increasingly asked to provide advice beyond the immediate postoperative period. Participation in sport is an important component of childhood development, yet there is limited evidence or consensus guidance to inform recommendations regarding contact sports for children with VP shunts. As a result, clinical advice is often based on individual experience rather that robust data. METHODS: A structured electronic questi
