Dipping and coating operations. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Labor. Final rule.

OSHA's standards for dipping and coating operations, codified at sections 1910.108 and 1910.94(d), are designed to protect employees from fire, explosion, and other hazards associated with these operations. On April 7, 1998 (63 FR 16918), OSHA published proposed revisions to these standards in the Federal Register. The Federal Register announcement requested comments on the proposed rule, as well as on three major issues identified by OSHA. Based on these comments and other considerations, the Agency has developed the final standard to accomplish several goals: To rewrite the former standards

Evaluation research in occupational health services: general principles and a systematic review of empirical studies.

OBJECTIVES: To study the nature and extent of evaluation research in occupational health services (OHSs). METHODS: Literature review of evaluation research in OHSs. On the basis of a conceptual model of OHS evaluation, empirical studies are categorised into aspects of input, process, output, outcome, and OHS core activities. RESULTS: Many methods to evaluate OHSs or OHS activities exist, depending on the objective and object of evaluation. The amount of empirical studies on evaluation of OHSs or OHS activities that met the non-restrictive inclusion criteria, was remarkably limited. Most of t

Ionizing radiation. An overview for the occupational health nurse. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

1. Everyone is exposed to ionizing radiation. Approximately 82% of this exposure is natural background from cosmic and terrestrial sources, and 18% is due to man made sources. 2. Public exposure to ionizing radiation or contamination of the environment by radioactivity engenders intense fear. The emotional and psychologic stresses resulting from exposure should be recognized and addressed early in a radiation incident. 3. Health care providers should understand the physics, chemistry, and biology of radiation to communicate effectively about it.

Study of the knowledge, attitude of Egyptian health care workers towards occupational HIV infection.

Acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was reported for the first time in Egypt in 1986. Up to March 1993, 60 cases were notified to the Ministry of Health and 359 were detected to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most cases had acquired infection abroad through blood, blood products or sexual contact. The number of cases is continuously increasing. Fear and ignorance about HIV infection causes panic among health care workers (HCWs) whenever a case is discovered and needs medical care. We assessed the knowledge and attitude of 346 HCWs towards the probability of occupat

Occupational injury and disease among patients presenting to general practitioners in a community health centre.

A prospective survey was conducted of all patients presenting over a six-month period to the primary medical care unit of a community health centre in an urban industrial area to determine the number and types of work-related injuries and disease, the causes, and details of the injured workers and their workplaces. Two-hundred and eighty-three patients, 7.2 per cent of the total number of patients attending, were diagnosed as having a work-related injury or disease; 250 patients had occupational injuries and 33 had occupational diseases. The most common injuries were open wounds, sprains and s

The relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder, occupational stress, occupational burnout, and mental health in football referees: a national cross-sectional survey in China.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, as a global public health emergency, is widely recognized as a major traumatic event with far-reaching implications for individual mental health. Football referees, as a distinct occupational group, may have been particularly vulnerable to elevated trauma exposure and psychological burden during the pandemic. However, research on the post-pandemic mental health status of this population-and the mechanisms underlying it-remains scarce. This study aims to investigate the relationships and underlying mechanisms among post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), occu

The risk of occupational human immunodeficiency virus infection in health care workers. Italian Multicenter Study. The Italian Study Group on Occupational Risk of HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: More than 50 cases of occupationally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in health care workers (HCWs) have been reported worldwide. Determinants of injuries and of infection are important to investigate to design effective prevention programs. METHODS: In Italy, 29 acute-care public hospitals were enrolled in a multicenter study between 1986 and 1990. At each facility, all HCWs were enrolled who reported percutaneous, mucous-membrane, or nonintact-skin exposure to the body fluids and tissues to which universal precautions apply from an HIV-infected patient. Impact of asbestos on public health: a retrospective study on a series of subjects with occupational and non-occupational exposure to asbestos during the activity of Fibronit plant (Broni, Italy).

The goal of this study is to understand more about the role of asbestos in causing human diseases, first of all mesothelioma, by investigating a large series of deaths due to asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). The main aim is to clarify if even very low amounts of asbestos can cause mesothelioma and other ARDs, as well as to find out if a different individual vulnerability can be important. This retrospective study included 188 subjects who died from asbestos related diseases in 2000-2017 in the area around Broni, Italy, where an important asbestos cement factory had been active from 1932 until

Impact of Climate Conditions on Occupational Health and Related Economic Losses: A New Feature of Global and Urban Health in the Context of Climate Change.

One feature of climate change is the increasing heat exposure in many workplaces where efficient cooling systems cannot be applied. Excessive heat exposure is a particular problem for working people because of the internal heat production when muscle work is carried out. The physiological basis for severe heat stroke, other clinical effects, and heat exhaustion is well known. One feature of this health effect of excessive workplace heat exposure is reduced work capacity, and new research has started to quantify this effect in the context of climate change. Current climate conditions in tropica

Contribution of job-exposure matrices for exposure assessment in occupational safety and health monitoring systems: application from the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network.

OBJECTIVES: To detect new hazards ("signals"), occupational health monitoring systems mostly rest on the description of exposures in the jobs held and on reports by medical doctors; these are subject to declarative bias. Our study aims to assess whether job-exposure matrices (JEMs) could be useful tools for signal detection by improving exposure reporting. METHODS: Using the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network (RNV3P) data from 2001 to 2011, we explored the associations between disease and exposure prevalence for 3 well-known pathology/exposure couples and

Burden of cancer attributable to six occupational exposures in the Netherlands, 2021: a health impact assessment study.

INTRODUCTION: Although numerous occupational exposures are known to be carcinogenic, the extent to which they contribute to the cancer burden in the Netherlands remains unclear. We estimated the annual cancer burden attributable to six occupational carcinogens in the Netherlands for 2021. METHODS: We selected occupational exposures and related cancer sites classified as group 1 human carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, focusing on the six with the highest cancer burden in a UK study. These exposures include asbestos, respirable crystalline silica, diesel engine exh
