Anthelminthic treatment raises plasma iron levels but does not decrease the acute-phase response in Jakarta school children.

The study was conducted to investigate the impact of intestinal helminthiasis and treatment on iron status and acute phase response (APR) among urban Indonesian primary school children, aged 8-11 years old. The prevalence of helminthiasis among these children was; Ascaris lumbricoides, 81.6%; Trichuris trichiura, 88.3%; and mixed infection of A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura, 70.0%. Of 120 children enrolled in the investigation, 59 received a single 400 mg dose of albendazole, and 61 received a placebo. Ten days following treatment, the prevalence of ascariasis and trichuriasis in the treatmen…

[Helminths detection with video capsule endoscopy].

The article describes clinical observations of helminthiasis detection in 18 of 208 patients during video capsule endoscopy (VCE). Indications for the appointment of VCE were complex clinical situations associated with the search for inflammatory diseases of the small intestine and sources of small intestine bleeding. Because of the high cost of VCE the diagnosis of parasitic diseases should be based on laboratory techniques in clinical practice. Only in case of anemia of unknown etiology VCE demonstrates high efficiency.

[An epidemiological study of intestinal bilharziasis and roundworm infections in Bafia (Cameroon)].

The prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis is measured by means of stool examinations. In Bafia eggs are passed in the feces of 69.1% of the inhabitants for Ascaris lumbricoides, 70.1 % for Trichuris trichiura, 59.6 % for Necator americanus and 14.8% for Enterobius vermicularis. A small focus of intestinal bilharziasis exists in Bafia and eggs of Schistosoma mansoni are found in the feces of 18.6% of the persons studied. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is the intermediate host of the parasite and transmission occurs in the town itself, in the fish-culture pool and in the rivers Guen and Rutop.

Rodents Used for the Propagation of Hookworms and Haemonchus contortus.

Helminthiasis due to hookworm infestations in humans and Haemonchus contortus in sheep cause untold levels of disease and economic losses worldwide. Drug resistance is an ever-growing problem with pathogenic helminths. Thus, there is a critical need for new treatment strategies for hookworms and H. contortus that depends on animal models. Because hook- worms and H. contortus are obligate parasites, they can only be maintained using live animals. This review describes use of the Syrian golden hamster to propagate hookworms and Mongolian gerbil to propagate H. contortus.

Leucocyte variation, an insight of host defenses during hymenolepiasis and restoration with praziquantel.

Haematological studies in helminthiasis reveal drastic alterations in the white blood cells (leucocytes), and its various components like neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and eosinophils. The use of proper anthelmintic agent, restores normalcy in the infected host. These variations during helminth infections reflect the host defense status in combating the parasitic attack. The present study involves the evaluation of these total and differential haematological alterations, induced in the laboratory mouse Mus musculus, infested with the intestinal helminth, Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm)…

[Fish infection with Opisthorchis larvae in Russia and some contiguous countries (by the materials of the "Cadaster of opisthorchis infection foci in Russia in 1994"].

A cadastre of opisthorchiasis foci with places under study and specious fish invasion with larvae of this helminthiasis has been first drawn up. Opisthorchis larvae have been found to be recorded in 23 species and 2 subspecies of the Cyprinidae family and 1 species of the Cobitidae family. The cadastre permits the areas epidemiologically hazardous due to opisthorchiasis to be determined. The data on fish species-specific infection in different river basins may render a great deal of aid to sanitary-and-epidemiological surveillance workers in implementing preventive measures in specific regions…

Case report: Ocular gnathostomiasis in northwestern Mexico.

A 42-year-old woman from Culiacan in the Sinaloa State of Mexico presented with a four-year history of migratory, pruritic, painful swellings of the face. Palpebral edema with conjunctival erythema developed when lesions developed near the eye. Routine eye examination showed a mobile worm in the anterior chamber. Following surgical removal, the parasite was identified by light and electron microscopy as an advanced third-stage larva of Gnathostoma sp. This prevalence of this helminthiasis may be increasing in areas where eating freshwater raw fish ("cebiche") is customary.

Treatment of hydatid cyst with albendazole desensitization: A pediatric case report.

Albendazole is a benzimidazole group drug used alone or in combination with surgery in the treatment of many helminthiasis, especially hydatid cysts. Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction has been reported rarely. Treatment with desensitization has been successfully applied in a few adult patients, however literature information on pediatric patients was not available. Here, we present a pediatric case in which Type 1 reaction occurred due to the use of albendazole during hydatid cyst treatment and undergone desensitization.

VISCERAL GNATHOSTOMIASIS WITH SIMULTANEOUS DAMAGE TO THE UPPER AND LOWER PARTS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT.

In this article, we described a rare atypical clinical case of tropical helminthiasis - a visceral gnathostomiasis with simultaneous damage of the upper and lower parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The visceral form is the rarest variant and among the literary data, only single cases of this form are described in the world. Therefore the management of such patients requires an individual and balanced approach since it is almost impossible to predict the consequences of any medical interventions. This determines the clinical uniqueness of this case and requires further research of clinical gu…

[Necator americanus uncinariasis in an infant born and residing in Mexico City].

A six-month-old infant is reported with the unquestionable diagnosis diagnosis of Necator americanus uncinariasis. The mother was also infected with the same hookworm. The patient was born and has always dwelt in Mexico City, where helminthiasis is considered extremely rare. The epidemiologic studies determined that the dwelling conditions were inadequate for the transmittal of the agent through the soil. The authors emphasize the importance of the presumptive diagnosis in those cases suggesting the disease and to carry out studies to confirm the existence of other infectious means

Anthelmintic activity of European fern extracts against Haemonchus contortus.

Most drugs used in the treatment of helminthiasis in humans and animals have lost their efficacy due to the development of drug-resistance in helminths. Moreover, since anthelmintics, like many pharmaceuticals, are now recognized as hazardous contaminants of the environment, returning to medicinal plants and their products represents an environmentally friendly way to treat helminthiasis. The goal of the present study was to test the anthelminthic activity of methanol extracts of eight selected European ferns from the genera Dryopteris, Athyrium and Blechnum against the nematode Haemonchus con…

Spatial analysis and risk mapping of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Brazil, using Bayesian geostatistical models.

Soil-transmitted helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm) negatively impact the health and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of people, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries, including Brazil. Reliable maps of the spatial distribution and estimates of the number of infected people are required for the control and eventual elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. We used advanced Bayesian geostatistical modelling, coupled with geographical information systems and remote sensing to visualize the distribution of the three soil-transmitted helminth spec…
