Herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses: forgotten but not gone.

Herpesvirus infections are common complications of organ transplantation. The most frequent herpesvirus infections are caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex (HSV) and varicella zoster (VZV). Despite expansion of the therapeutic armamentarium, HSV and VZV continue to cause morbidity and occasional mortality in transplant recipients. Here we review the incidence and risk factors for HSV and VZV disease, their clinical presentation, effects of newer immunosuppressive regimens and prophylaxis for HSV and VZV in solid organ transplant recipients.

Neonatal stridor in association with herpes simplex infection of the larynx.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in the neonatal period may be confined to the eyes, skin and upper aerodigestive tract or may be widely disseminated to other organs, with particular recognition of involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) causing herpes encephalitis (Whitley et al., 1980a, b; Andersen, 1987). Primary laryngeal HSV infection is extremely uncommon. We present a case of acute neonatal stridor secondary to such localized disease and discuss its management.

[An experimental herpes simplex virus infection in the vestibular nerve].

The author succeeded in producing vestibular ganglionitis by inoculating herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) into the back of the auricle of a new-born mouse. Postural deviation to the inoculated side was observed in 14 of 275 mice (5.1%) 6 to 10 days after the inoculation. In 6 of the 14 mice (42.9%) with postural deviation, HSV antigens were demonstrated immunohistochemically in the vestibular ganglion cells of the inoculated side. No antigens were identified in the animals with normal posture or in controls. Vestibular functions were evaluated in 5 animals suffering from postural deviation …

Herpes simplex virus DNA in the brain of psychotic patients.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA was found by spot blot hybridization in the right nc. amygdalae of 3 out 10 patients who underwent curative stereotactic surgery for severe mental retardation with aggressive behavior and/or paranoic schizophrenia. Of these, 6 were also tested for the presence of CMV DNA sequences with negative results. Biopsy specimens from nc. amygdalae of another 7 psychotic patients were cultured in vitro but no virus was isolated.

Wratizolin ITCL in the treatment of herpes simplex and recurrent and zoster.

Herpes simplex and zoster are frequent skin diseases of viral origin and the mechanism of their development as well as their course are not yet fully known. Fully effective methods of treating these diseases are not known. The authors evaluated the results of the externally applied ITCL preparation in the form of a 2% cream. A group of 92 patients was treated, 64 with herpes simplex or recurrent, 16 with zoster, 9 with purulent skin lesions and 3 with verruca plana. Very good results, that is earlier regression of lesions with inhibition of further dissemination, were obtained in 83% of patien…

The development of retinitis in mice with nonfatal herpes simplex encephalitis.

A mutant strain of herpes simplex virus, type 1 (HSV1), selected for high resistance to acyclovir (ACV) was inoculated intracerebrally into mice. The mice survived with no obvious neurological signs but developed cataracts within 4-8 weeks of inoculation. Histological examination revealed only a mild encephalitis, but around 7 days after injection a florid, necrotizing, viral retinitis developed. There was almost simultaneous involvement of both eyes. Inflammatory cell infiltration and early myelin degeneration along the course of the optic nerve suggested cell to cell spread of virus to the r…

Herpes simplex virus in patients with aphthous ulcers in Bangkok.

Fifty-two paired sera and 40 single sera and swabs from the aphthous like ulcers of the tongue, gum, and buccal mucosa were collected from patients at a private clinic and from workers of canned fish packaging company in an attempt to isolate herpes simplex virus. Sixty-eight percent had positive HVH isolation with high ELISA antibody titers. Among 52 paired sera from patients, 68.4% had recurrent infections and 31.6% had primary infection.

Double encephalitis with herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus in an adult.

A 51-year-old housewife developed symptoms of a cold followed by high fever, delirium, coma, rigidity of extremity muscles, positive Babinski sign and generalized convulsions, while complement-fixing antibody titre to herpes simplex virus in the sera raised over 128 X and declined to 8 X in the course. She finally expired of bronchopneumonia following status epilepticus after 94 days of illness. Severe necrosis with extensive hemorrhage in the white matter was predominant in the temporal, insular and orbitofrontal cortex, thalamus and globus pallidus. Focal rarefaction of the cerebral cortex w…

In situ PCR localization of herpes simplex virus DNA sequences in disseminated neonatal herpes encephalitis.

To more precisely define the role of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in development of nervous system disease in neonates with disseminated infection, an in situ polymerase chain reaction (ISPCR) method was used to detect and localize HSV DNA sequences in paraffin sections of neural and non-neural autopsy tissues. In subregions of adjacent sections corresponding to ISPCR-labeled and unlabeled areas, HSV specificity was verified using solution PCR and Southern blots. In serial sections, ISPCR results were compared to lesions, HSV antigen and, in selected samples, to viral sequence detection by in si…
