Choice architecture for young adult blood donor recruitment - a feasibility study.

Blood shortages remain an ongoing challenge, ameliorable by increasing blood donations. Choice architecture is an emerging concept in psychology dealing with the targeted presentation of options to encourage a desired decision. A pilot study was designed to test the feasibility of implementing six choice architecture strategies on a Midwest high-school blood drive. These include framing, conformity, mere measurement, availability heuristic, loss aversion and status quo bias. A pre-post interrupted time-series evaluation was performed to evaluate for an immediate impact on blood donations. All

Toward an implicit measure of emotions: ratings of abstract images reveal distinct emotional states.

Although implicit tests of positive and negative affect exist, implicit measures of distinct emotional states are scarce. Three experiments examined whether a novel implicit emotion-assessment task, the rating of emotion expressed in abstract images, would reveal distinct emotional states. In Experiment 1, participants exposed to a sadness-inducing story inferred more sadness, and less happiness, in abstract images. In Experiment 2, an anger-provoking interaction increased anger ratings. In Experiment 3, compared to neutral images, spider images increased fear ratings in spider-fearful partici

Bound to lose: physical incapacitation increases the conceptualized size of an antagonist in men.

Because decision-making in situations of potential conflict hinges on assessing many features of the self and the foe, this process can be facilitated by summarizing diverse attributes in a single heuristic representation. Physical size and strength are evolutionarily ancient determinants of victory in conflict, and their relevance is reinforced during development. Accordingly, size and muscularity constitute ready dimensions for a summary representation of relative formidability, a perspective paralleled by the notion that social power is represented using envisioned relative size. Physical i

An effect of inter-trial duration on the gambler's fallacy choice bias.

The gambler's fallacy is defined as the avoidance of a winning outcome in a stochastic environment with a constant probability. We tested the possibility that the gambler's fallacy in humans is responsive to the amount of time between choice allocations. Two groups of subjects were placed in a six-choice betting game in which the choices were clustered into two "patches." Groups were defined by the length of time - 2s or 6s - between trials. On any given trial subjects allocated six points among the alternatives, and retained any points that were bet on the winning alternative. Both groups sho

A network-based method for predicting disease-causing genes.

A fundamental problem in human health is the inference of disease-causing genes, with important applications to diagnosis and treatment. Previous work in this direction relied on knowledge of multiple loci associated with the disease, or causal genes for similar diseases, which limited its applicability. Here we present a new approach to causal gene prediction that is based on integrating protein-protein interaction network data with gene expression data under a condition of interest. The latter are used to derive a set of disease-related genes which is assumed to be in close proximity in the

Familiarity breeds distortion: the effects of media exposure on false reports concerning media coverage of the terrorist attacks in london on 7 July 2005.

The present experiment investigated whether increased media exposure could lead to an increase in memory distortions regarding a traumatic public event: the explosion of the No. 30 bus in Tavistock Square, London on 7 July 2005. A total of 150 Swedish and 150 UK participants completed a series of questionnaires about their memory of either (i) the aftermath of the explosion, (ii) a non-existent computerised reconstruction of the moment of the explosion, or (iii) non-existent closed circuit television footage of the moment of the explosion. In line with the availability heuristic, U.K. particip

Congenital myopathies in the new millennium.

Few medical disciplines have benefited so enormously from the molecular revolution as myology. Whereas the congenital myopathies have flourished from enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy, defining individual congenital myopathies by structural abnormalities, genetic research has only recently focused on congenital myopathies. However, a number of congenital myopathies have been molecularly elucidated: central and multiminicore diseases, nemaline myopathy, myotubular myopathy, and congenital myopathy marked by aggregation of proteins, giving rise to the concept of protein aggregate myo

Sudarshan Kriya yogic breathing in the treatment of stress, anxiety, and depression: part I-neurophysiologic model.

Mind-body interventions are beneficial in stress-related mental and physical disorders. Current research is finding associations between emotional disorders and vagal tone as indicated by heart rate variability. A neurophysiologic model of yogic breathing proposes to integrate research on yoga with polyvagal theory, vagal stimulation, hyperventilation, and clinical observations. Yogic breathing is a unique method for balancing the autonomic nervous system and influencing psychologic and stress-related disorders. Many studies demonstrate effects of yogic breathing on brain function and physiolo

[The concept of allostasis and allostatic load: psychoneuroimmunological findings].

Classical theories have conceptualized stress as a reaction to threat to the homeostasis within the organism requiring an adaptive response. However, postulating mechanisms that could link such responses to long-term detrimental health outcomes remains difficult. The allostatic load concept enables us to think about how mediators can be protective in the short run but may have damaging effects when overused and/or not shut off. It further facilitates the formulation of cause-effects cascades to explain the link of dysregulations in stress mediators such as glucocorticoids and catecholamines an

Serotonin and anxiety: current models.

Evidence for the importance of the serotonin system in anxiety disorders has increased substantially in recent years. Although preclinical research has provided an important source of hypotheses, clinical work on the value of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in these conditions has been particularly persuasive. In this paper, a number of models of serotonin in the anxiety disorders are reviewed, and the clinical advantages of the SSRIs in anxiety disorders are emphasized. Models of serotonin in anxiety disorders include: 1) a 'see-saw model'; 2) an 'amygdala model'; and 3) a 'ba

A Brunswikian evolutionary-developmental theory of adolescent sex offending.

A Brunswikian Evolutionary-Developmental model was developed to relate the sex offending behavior of adolescents to other forms of social deviance, tracing a history of repeated frustration and failure in various competitive sexual strategies and escalation to more extreme means of obtaining sexual gratification. Four hypothetical constructs were proposed as stages in the development of sexual criminality: (1) Psycho-Social Deficiency (PSD); (2) Non-Criminal Sexuality (NCS); (3) Non-Sexual Criminality (NSC); and (4) Sexual Criminality (SC). Significant direct and indirect pathways led from PSD

Male bisexual behavior and HIV risk in the United States: synthesis of research with implications for behavioral interventions.

This paper reviews recent literature on male bisexuality and HIV risk and suggests new directions for intervention and research in the United States. AIDS case reports and behavioral studies based on convenience samples suggest that behaviorally bisexual men use condoms inconsistently with male and female partners, seldom disclose their bisexuality to their female partners, and are more likely than exclusively homosexual men to report multiple HIV risk behaviors. Male bisexuality may present greatest HIV risk in the context of (a) male prostitution, (b) injecting drug use, (c) sexual identity

Robust online multi-object tracking with conditional diffusion motion hypotheses and time-aware contrastive prototypes.

Online multi-object tracking (MOT) is typically implemented as tracking-by-detection: a motion prior propagates each track to the current frame, and appearance cues drive data association. Despite strong detectors and association heuristics, two practical failure modes persist in crowded, interaction-heavy videos: (i) deterministic, unimodal propagation over-commits under non-linear motion and short-term ambiguity, causing overlap-based gating to discard correct matches; and (ii) appearance embeddings drift over time, so stale historical features can dominate similarity scores after long gaps.…

From rules to foundation models: a comprehensive review of machine learning approaches for siRNA design.

Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are a clinically validated therapeutic modality with eight FDA-approved drugs, yet designing effective siRNAs remains computationally challenging due to complex dependencies on sequence composition, thermodynamic properties, target-site accessibility, and off-target interactions. Over two decades, computational approaches have evolved from empirical heuristics to deep learning systems integrating physical priors with learned representations. We review the complete landscape of machine learning methods for siRNA design, spanning classical scoring rules, pretraine…

Inhibitory control in Bipolar Disorder disclosed by theta band modulation.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive inhibition is key to cognitive control in healthy and psychiatric conditions. Bipolar Disorder (BD) individuals display a range of inhibitory deficits and high levels of impulsivity across all stages of the disease, including euthymia. METHODS: We tested how the inhibition of heuristics in favor of analytical strategies influences the elaboration of sentences with logical quantifiers by means of a sentence-picture matching task in which the processing of quantified sentences containing the logical universal and particular quantifiers was required. Do behavioral drivers matter for healthcare decision-making during crises? A study of low-income women in El Salvador during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Understanding health-seeking behaviors and their drivers is key for governments to manage health policies. A growing body of research explores the role of cognitive biases and heuristics in health and care-seeking behaviors, but little is known about how a context of heightened anxiety and uncertainty might influence these behavioral drivers. This study analyzes the association between four behavioral predictors-internal locus of control, impatience, optimism bias, and aspirations-and healthcare decisions among low-income women in El Salvador, controlling for other factors. We find positive as…
