[Hip diseases in children].

In the orthopedic practice, the hip joint is of special importance at all ages. For the general practitioner and the pediatrician are those disorders of the hip of high importance, for which early diagnosis and initiation of treatment is critical for prognosis. The following disorders should be looked for in priority, if symptoms indicate a possible affection of hip: congenital dysplasia and dislocation of the hip, coxitis, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and tumors. One should always be aware that especially in children disease of the hip need not necessarily present with symptoms directly…

The snapping hip syndrome.

The snapping hip syndrome is a symptom complex characterized by hip pain and an audible snapping of the hip with exercise typically seen in young individuals. "External" and "internal" etiologies have been described, although the "internal" etiology is poorly understood. A clinical, radiographic, and anatomical study of eight patients with this disorder, secondary to an internal etiology, was undertaken to aid in the diagnosis and surgical treatment. Iliopsoas bursography with cineradiography revealed subluxation of the iliopsoas tendon to be an apparent cause of the snapping hip. The anatomy …

[Post-traumatic hip dysplasia].

At a traffic accident in 1970 a then 6 year old boy got an impacted fracture of the neck of the right femur with persisting subluxation. This was not particularly noticed because of the severity of other injuries. In the meantime the most recent follow-up examination (1981) of the boy (now 17 years old) showed a dysplasia like growth disorder. Various possibilities of interpretation are discussed.

Hip dysplasia in dogs.

Inspired by the desire to find an objective selection criterion which might be useful notably in borderline cases of hip dysplasia, 1265 sets of radiographs, taken on 1128 pedigree Rottweilers, have been assessed for 12 particulars of the joints; three subevaluations as well as a final score (FS) have been obtained for each individual involved. The data so obtained from a representative subpopulation have been analysed for their contributions to the 12 assessments leading towards the value of the final score. This article shows that FS, most notably in the borderline cases, is due to a subject…

Hip fracture after hemiplegia.

In a series of 57 hemiplegic patients who subsequently fractured their hips, it was found that hip fracture occurred significantly more often on the hemiplegic side. Hip fracture was equally common in right- and left-sided hemiplegia, and often occurred within one year of the stroke. Two factors seem to be important in the genesis of hip fractures in hemiplegic patients: the tendency of stroke patients to fall to the affected side as a result of impaired locomotor function, and the development of disuse osteoporosis in the hemiplegic limb.
