Imaging of hip disorders in athletes.

Normal hip joint function is fundamental in running-, jumping-, and kicking-based sporting activities. Hip disorders do not account for a large portion of exercise-related injuries, but they can pose a clinical dilemma since symptoms tend to be non-specific. Conventional radiographs may demonstrate some causes of hip pain, such as stress fractures and degenerative joint disease. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the hip has proven valuable in the diagnosis of radiographically occult osseous abnormalities and periarticular soft tissue disorders such as stress fractures, avulsion injuries, musc

Proximal and distal contributions to lower extremity injury: a review of the literature.

Excessive or prolonged foot pronation has been linked to the development of numerous overuse injuries affecting the lower limb. The originally proposed pathomechanical model suggests foot motion affects more proximal structures through disruption of distal to proximal coupling between the foot, tibia, femur, and hip. Research evidence supports the presence of a dynamic coupling mechanism between lower limb segments, however, the direction of the coupling is inconclusive. Recent prospective investigations of the role of the lumbo-pelvic hip complex have identified a strong association between p

Effect of Flat Running Shoes on Hip Kinematics in Male Recreational Runners.

Patellofemoral joint pain and iliotibial band syndrome are very common running-related injuries. Excessive contralateral pelvic drop, hip adduction, and hip internal rotation have been suggested to be associated with the two injuries. The purpose of this repeated measures and the cross-sectional study was to investigate the effect of flat running shoes on these kinematic variables compared with that of conventional running shoes with a 10 mm drop. Eighteen male recreational runners were recruited to run in flat shoes and conventional shoes with a 10 mm drop, in random order. Impact force data

Total Hip Arthroplasty for Untreated Acetabular Fractures: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Acetabular fractures are managed acutely with internal fixation but when left untreated for more than 3 weeks, these injuries lead to post-traumatic arthritis and osteonecrosis of the hip. Such complications indicate the need for total hip arthroplasty. In the Philippines, no studies have been published documenting the outcomes of managing untreated acetabular fractures with total hip arthroplasty. CASE PRESENTATION: This study documented five cases of untreated acetabular fractures managed with total hip arthroplasty in Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Philippines in 2023

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring of somatosensory evoked potentials during hip arthroscopy surgery.

Arthroscopic hip surgery is used to treat many of the causes of hip pain, hip instability, and hip disorders. Hip pain and instability are often caused by injuries to the acetabular labrum. Repairing labral tears, suturing, and debridement involve stabilizing the hip and placing the operative side leg in traction (Phillipon 2006, Phillipon and Schenker 2006) to allow for instrument clearance and to avoid iatrogenic injury to the chondral surfaces. This places the sciatic nerve in a stretched position and may cause temporary or permanent nerve injury. Transient neuropraxia is the most common in
