[Sexually Transmitted Infections - What's New, What's Different?].

The incidence of sexually transmitted infections like syphilis or gonorrhea is still rising, particularly in the high-risk population of men having sex with men (MSM). Neisseria gonorrhoeae is capable to develop resistance to all antibiotics previously or currently used for treatment. Dual antimicrobial therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin is considered the current empirical first-line therapy. Since 2011 ceftriaxone-resistant strains have emerged in many countries and in 2018 the first case with high-level resistance to azithromycin and resistance to ceftriaxone was documented in the UK,

Sexual orientation and gender identity in schools: A call for more research in school psychology-No more excuses.

Research focused on sexual orientation and gender identity among youth is scarce in school psychology journals. Graybill and Proctor (2016; this issue) found that across a sample of eight school support personnel journals only .3 to 3.0% of the articles since 2000 included lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)-related research. It appears that special issues are a mechanism for publishing LGBT-related scholarship. This commentary includes a call for more research in school psychology and other related disciplines that intentionally addresses experiences of LGBT youth and their families. T

The decision to remove homosexuality from the DSM: twenty years later.

Twenty years have passed since the American Psychiatric Association (APA) voted, in 1973, to remove "Ego-syntonic Homosexuality" from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The present study investigates the influence of the patient's sexual orientation on the therapist's perception of the former's mental health. Four hundred and seventeen Israeli therapists (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers) participated in the study, representing a cross-section of professionals in the mental health services in Israel. The measures included a demographic que

Health disparities among young adult sexual minorities in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research suggests that young adult sexual minorities (identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual or engaging in same-sex attractions or behaviors) experience poorer health than their majority counterparts, but many measures of health inequity remain unexamined in population-based research. PURPOSE: To describe a wide range of health status and healthcare access characteristics of sexual minorities in comparison with those of the majority population in a national sample of U.S. young adults. METHODS: Binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses of Wave IV data (2008)

Discrimination and mental health among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States.

Health disparities among sexual minority groups, particularly mental health disparities, are well-documented. Numerous studies have demonstrated heightened prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders among lesbian, gay, and bisexual groups as compared with heterosexuals. Some authors posit that these disparities are the result of the stress that prejudice and perceived discrimination can cause. The current study extends previous research by examining the associations between multiple types of discrimination, based on race or ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, and past-year mental he

Support for gay and lesbian civil rights: development and examination of a new scale.

This research outlines the development of a psychometrically sound, uni-dimensional scale to assess support for gay and lesbian civil rights. Initial scale development involved examining item-pool responses from 224 undergraduate students. The resulting Support for Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights (SGLCR) scale consisted of 20 items. In a series of studies, the SGLCR demonstrated a stable factor structure, strong internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. The relationships between SGLCR scores and participants' sex, religiosity, political ideology, gender role beliefs,

Mental health of the non-heterosexual population of England.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research into the prevalence of mental health problems in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people in the UK with most work conducted in the USA. AIMS: To relate the prevalence of mental disorder, self-harm and suicide attempts to sexual orientation in England, and to test whether psychiatric problems were associated with discrimination on grounds of sexuality. METHOD: The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007 (n = 7403) was representative of the population living in private UK households. Standardised questions provided demographic information. Neurotic sym

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth risks for emotional, physical, and social problems: results from a community-based survey.

OBJECTIVE: Health problems of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) youth are reported as differing from those of heterosexual youth. Increased depression, suicide, substance use, homelessness, and school dropout have been reported. Most studies of GLB youth use clinical or convenience samples. The authors conducted a community school-based health survey that included an opportunity to self-identify as GLB. METHOD: An anonymous self-report health care questionnaire was used during a community-based survey in 2 high schools in an upper middle class district. RESULTS: Significantly increased health

Sexual identity and drug use harm among high-risk, active substance users.

Research shows that sexual minorities are at greater risk for illicit substance use and related harm than their heterosexual counterparts. This study examines a group of active drug users to assess whether sexual identity predicts increased risk of substance use and harm from ecstasy, ketamine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and crack. Structured interviews were conducted with participants aged 15 years and older in Vancouver and Victoria, BC, Canada, during 2008-2012. Harm was measured with the World Health Organization's AUDIT and ASSIST tools. Regression analysis controlling for age, gender, e

Faculty members' views of individuals with different sexual orientations.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine faculty members' views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex individuals. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study sample consists of 180 faculty members who agreed to participate in the study. FINDINGS: The faculty members had positive attitudes towards homosexuals but were highly homophobic; furthermore, their responses to questions about their close social circle were severely homophobic. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: It is recommended that psychiatric nurses play an active role in eliminating faculty members' lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexu

Learning butch: tracing lesbian and trans becoming in the classroom.

In this autobiographical essay, I study the ways in which becoming a classroom teacher illuminated the school-based gender socialization that had shaped my contested understanding of myself as a girl and woman. Leaning on the work of queer theorists both within and outside of fields explicitly marked as "pedagogical," I examine the notion of the "hidden curriculum" of gender as made manifest in my first years teaching middle school English, and the transformative capacity within my students-and the learning spaces I shared with them-to deconstruct, play with, and disrupt, if not unlearn, the g

Lesbian Women Undergoing Assisted Reproduction: Diverse, But Not Different.

The use of assisted reproduction among women in relationships with other women has increased in the United States over the past decade as a result of increased legal access and social acceptance. Despite this shift, limited studies currently exist to guide optimal fertility care for this growing patient population of women seeking assisted reproduction. In this Commentary, assisted reproduction will be meant to include ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Conflicting studies suggest that self-identified lesbian women may demonstrate an increas

Effect of genes, social experience, and their interaction on the courtship behaviour of transgenic Drosophila males.

Behaviour depends (a) on genes that specify the neural and non-neural elements involved in the perception of and responses to sensory stimuli and (b) on experience that can modulate the fine development of these elements. We exposed transgenic and control Drosophila melanogaster males, and their hybrids, to male siblings during adult development and measured the contribution of genes and of experience to their courtship behaviour. The transgene CheB42a specifically targets male gustatory sensillae and alters the perception of male inhibitory pheromones which leads to frequent male-male interac

Comparing the characteristics of users of an online service for STI self-sampling with clinic service users: a cross-sectional analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Online services for self-sampling at home could improve access to STI testing; however, little is known about those using this new modality of care. This study describes the characteristics of users of online services and compares them with users of clinic services. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of routinely collected data on STI testing activity from online and clinic sexual health services in Lambeth and Southwark between 1January 2016 and 31March 2016. Activity was included for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis testing for residents of the boroughs aged
