Host susceptibility factors to cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The host-pathogen relationship is the focus of many different studies which use a variety of disease models and different pathogens. Immunological studies in the mouse using the intracellular parasite Leishmania have helped define several aspects of host-pathogen interactions. Resistance to Leishmania is dependent on the development of CD4+ Th1 cells which promote an effective cell mediated immune response. Production of the cytokine IFN-gamma during this immune response activates macrophages enabling them to kill the parasite and control the infection. In contrast, susceptibility to this para

Larval parasite occurrence in two killifish species, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) inhabiting two ephemeral ponds.

Ephemeral ponds provide unique opportunities to study host-parasite interactions under contrasting environmental conditions. We assessed the occurrence of larval parasites in two closely related rivulid fishes, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae, inhabiting geographically proximate but hydrologically isolated ponds. A total of 121 individuals of A. guarani and 30 of A. adrianae were examined. Parasites were recorded only in A. guarani, including a nematomorph larva, a proteocephalidean metacestode, a telorchiid metacercaria, and a diplostomid metacercaria, whereas A. adrianae showed no…

Cyclophilins as key players in protozoan parasite infections.

Cyclophilins (Cyps), a highly conserved family of immunophilins with peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PPIase) activity, play pivotal roles in protein folding, cell signaling, immune modulation, and host-pathogen interactions. In protozoan infections, parasite-encoded Cyps are essential for immune evasion, oxidative stress regulation, and pathogen survival. This review highlights the multifaceted roles of Cyps in Plasmodium, Toxoplasma, Trypanosoma, and Leishmania, with particular emphasis on their involvement in host cell invasion, replication, and immunomodulation. Key Cyps-such as Plasmo

Echinostomes and Other Intestinal Trematode Infections.

Intestinal trematodes are among the most common types of parasitic worms. About 76 species belonging to 14 families have been recorded infecting humans. Infection commonly occurs when humans eat raw or undercooked foods that contain the infective metacercariae. These parasites are diverse in regard to their morphology, geographical distribution and life cycle, which make it difficult to study the parasitic diseases that they cause. Many of these intestinal trematodes have been considered as endemic parasites in the past. However, the geographical limits and the population at risk are currently

Locomotor effects of a fibrosis-based immune response in stickleback fish.

The vertebrate immune system provides an impressively effective defense against parasites and pathogens. However, these benefits must be balanced against a range of costly side-effects including energy loss and risks of auto-immunity. These costs might include biomechanical impairment of movement, but little is known about the intersection between immunity and biomechanics. Here, we show that a fibrosis immune response to Schistocephalus solidus infection in freshwater threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has collateral effects on their locomotion. Although fibrosis is effective at

Stable isotopes unravel the feeding mode-trophic position relationship in trematode parasites.

Stable isotopes have been sporadically used over the last two decades to characterise host-parasite trophic relationships. The main reason for this scarcity is the lack of an obvious pattern in the ratio of nitrogen stable isotope values (δ15 N) of parasites in comparison to their host tissues, which would be key to understand any host-parasite system dynamics. To circumvent this, we focused on a single snail host, Zeacumantus subcarinatus, and three of its trematode parasites. We used stable isotopes to investigate each host-trematode trophic relationship and shed light on the mechanisms util

The secretome of a parasite alters its host's behaviour but does not recapitulate the behavioural response to infection.

Parasites with complex life cycles have been proposed to manipulate the behaviour of their intermediate hosts to increase the probability of reaching their final host. The cause of these drastic behavioural changes could be manipulation factors released by the parasite in its environment (the secretome), but this has rarely been assessed. We studied a non-cerebral parasite, the cestode Schistocephalus solidus, and its intermediate host, the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), whose response to danger becomes significantly diminished when infected. These altered behaviours appear o

Fluctuating asymmetry, parasitism and reproductive fitness in two species of gammarid crustacean.

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, is assumed to reflect developmental instability. FA is predicted to increase in response to environmental stress, including parasite infection. In addition, based on theory we predict a higher FA in sexually selected traits, due to their greater sensitivity to stress. We investigated the relationships between FA, parasitism and reproductive fitness in 2 species of gammarid crustacean, incorporating both sexual and non-sexual traits. We tested the hypothesis that gammarids infected by vertically transmitte

Experience-dependent olfactory behaviors of the parasitic nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus.

Parasitic nematodes of humans and livestock cause extensive disease and economic loss worldwide. Many parasitic nematodes infect hosts as third-stage larvae, called iL3s. iL3s vary in their infection route: some infect by skin penetration, others by passive ingestion. Skin-penetrating iL3s actively search for hosts using host-emitted olfactory cues, but the extent to which passively ingested iL3s respond to olfactory cues was largely unknown. Here, we examined the olfactory behaviors of the passively ingested murine gastrointestinal parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus. H. polygyrus iL3s were th

Susceptibility, behaviour, and retention of the parasitic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) differ with Atlantic salmon population origin.

Atlantic salmon populations across the world have diverse ecological and evolutionary histories, from wild anadromous or landlocked, to dome … ild salmon and 20.1% (±28.5%) in landlocked salmon. This study provides early evidence for diverged host-parasite interactions associated with domestication in this system.

Chytridiomycosis of Marine Diatoms-The Role of Stress Physiology and Resistance in Parasite-Host Recognition and Accumulation of Defense Molecules.

Little is known about the role of chemotaxis in the location and attachment of chytrid zoospores to potential diatom hosts. Hypothesizing that environmental stress parameters affect parasite-host recognition, four chytrid-diatom tandem cultures (Chytridium sp./Navicula sp., Rhizophydium type I/Nitzschia sp., Rhizophydium type IIa/Rhizosolenia sp., Rhizophydium type IIb/Chaetoceros sp.) were used to test the chemotaxis of chytrid zoospores and the presence of potential defense molecules in a non-contact-co-culturing approach. As potential triggers in the chemotaxis experiments, standards of eig

Grandeur Alliances: Symbiont Metabolic Integration and Obligate Arthropod Hematophagy.

Several arthropod taxa live exclusively on vertebrate blood. This food source lacks essential metabolites required for the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis, and as such, these arthropods have formed symbioses with nutrient-supplementing microbes that facilitate their host's 'hematophagous' feeding ecology. Herein we highlight metabolic contributions of bacterial symbionts that reside within tsetse flies, bed bugs, lice, reduviid bugs, and ticks, with specific emphasis on B vitamin and cofactor biosynthesis. Importantly, these arthropods can transmit pathogens of medical and veterinary rele

The parasitic fauna of the European bison (Bison bonasus) (Linnaeus, 1758) and their impact on the conservation. Part 2. The structure and changes over time.

During the last century the recorded parasite fauna of Bison bonasus includes 88 species. These are 22 species of protozoa, 4 trematode species, 4 cestode species, 43 nematode species, 7 mites, 4 Ixodidae ticks, 1 Mallophaga species, 1 Anoplura, and 2 Hippoboscidae flies. There are few monoxenous parasites, the majority of parasites are typical for other Bovidae and Cervidae species and many are newly acquired from Cervidae. This is an evident increased trend in the parasite species richness, in both the prevalence and intensity of infections, which is associated with the bison population size

Transcriptomics and proteomics in human African trypanosomiasis: current status and perspectives.

Human African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the species Trypanosoma brucei sensu lato. Within this complex species, T. b. gambiense is responsible for the chronic form of sleeping sickness in Western and Central Africa, whereas T. b. rhodesiense causes the acute form of the disease in East Africa. Presently, 1.5 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per year are lost due to sleeping sickness. In addition, on the basis of the mortality, the disease is ranked ninth out of 25 human infectious and parasitic disea

Parasite epidemiology in a changing world: can molecular phylogeography help us tell the wood from the trees?

SUMMARY Molecular phylogeography has revolutionised our ability to infer past biogeographic events from cross-sectional data on current parasite populations. In ecological parasitology, this approach has been used to address fundamental questions concerning host-parasite co-evolution and geographic patterns of spread, and has raised many technical issues and problems of interpretation. For applied parasitologists, the added complexity inherent in adding population genetic structure to perceived parasite distributions can sometimes seem to cloud rather than clarify approaches to control. In thi

A Mitocentric View of the Main Bacterial and Parasitic Infectious Diseases in the Pediatric Population.

Infectious diseases occur worldwide with great frequency in both adults and children. Both infections and their treatments trigger mitochondrial interactions at multiple levels: (i) incorporation of damaged or mutated proteins to the complexes of the electron transport chain, (ii) mitochondrial genome (depletion, deletions, and point mutations) and mitochondrial dynamics (fusion and fission), (iii) membrane potential, (iv) apoptotic regulation, (v) generation of reactive oxygen species, among others. Such alterations may result in serious adverse clinical events with great impact on children's
