Provider Perspectives on the Delivery of Long-Acting PrEP for HIV Prevention to Men Who Have Sex with Men and Who Use Methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine use is associated with HIV risk behaviors, seroconversion, and suboptimal daily, oral PrEP adherence among men who have sex … s, which included competing priorities and inconsistent phone access. Despite the identification of housing instability as a barrier to long-acting PrEP engagement, it was also cited as a reason why long-acting PrEP may be particularly promising for MSM who use methamphetamine. Anticipated stigma was also identified as a primary barrier to long-acting PrEP engagement …

Impact of Limited Access to Surgical Care in Medically Underserved Communities.

Summary/BackgroundMedically underserved communities and ethnic minorities constitute a significant portion of the vulnerable population with … rved populations face significant barriers to health care due to socioeconomic factors like income, housing instability, and lack of insurance. These areas often have shortages of primary care providers, access to healthy foods, and high-value health care that may lead to unfavorable outcomes. Poor access and utilization of health services can also affect hospital sy …

Profile of Executive Functioning and Lifetime History of Acquired Brain Injury in Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness: A Pilot Study.

(1) Background: Housing instability is a public health issue in both developed and developing countries. This exploratory pilot study examines executive functioning (EF) and the history of acquired brain injury (ABI) in youth and young adults experiencing homelessness (YYEH). (2) Methods: Twenty-three YYEH (ages 18-25; 48% male) were recruited from a drop-in center in Central Ohio. The Ohio State University TBI Identification Method (OSU TBI-ID+ABI) was used to screen for exposure to ABI. Outcomes were measured using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function for Adults (BRIEF-A) and …

A systematic comparison of additive and interaction approaches to modeling the effects of syndemic problems on HIV outcomes in South Africa.

Much of the research on the effects of syndemics on HIV outcomes has utilized an additive approach. However, interaction effects may better … ner violence (IPV), post-traumatic stress, social anxiety, substance use, food insecurity, poverty, housing instability, and structural barriers to care. Depression, substance use, and food insecurity were selected for interaction terms based on a prior network analysis, which found these problems to be most central. Psychological distress among postpartum women who took opioids during pregnancy: the role of perceived stigma in healthcare settings.

This study examined the relationship between perceived stigma in healthcare settings during pregnancy and psychological distress and well-being in the postpartum period among individuals who took opioids while pregnant. Analyses included 134 birth mothers of opioid-exposed infants. At 0-1 months postpartum, perceived stigma and psychological distress were measured using the Prenatal Opioid use Perceived Stigma scale and measures from the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS). Food insecurity, housing instability, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) were also ass…

Adherence to behavioral therapy and psychiatry visits in a safety-net setting in Virginia, USA.

Little is known about predictors of adherence to outpatient behavioural therapy and psychiatry visits in those who experience homelessness. Yet, consistent receipt of services in the community is critical to preventing use of acute care psychiatric services, which cause a significant cost burden to the mental health system. This retrospective study examined sociodemographic, housing instability and health-related factors associated with adherence to behavioural therapy and psychiatry appointments among 1711 clients served by an urban healthcare for the homeless centre in Virginia, USA. Separation of telomere protection from length regulation by two different point mutations at amino acid 492 of RTEL1.

RTEL1 is an essential DNA helicase that plays multiple roles in genome stability and telomere length regulation. The ultra-long telomeres of the house mouse hinder its utility as a model for telomere-related diseases. We have previously generated a mouse model with human-length telomeres, termed "Telomouse," by substituting methionine 492 of mouse Rtel1 to a lysine (Rtel1M492K). In humans, a methionine to isoleucine mutation at this position causes the fatal telomere biology disorder Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome (HHS). Here, we introduced the Rtel1M492I point mutation into the mouse genome, g

Dynamics and intensity of Wuchereria bancrofti transmission in the savannah and forest regions of Liberia.

In four villages in the savannah and in the rain forest of Liberia, regular assessment of the biting activity and infection rates of anthropophilic mosquitoes have been carried out through full annual cycles. The microfilaremia rates in the localities in the savannah were 18.3% and 20.0% and in those of the forest 10.3% and 12.5%. The all-night catches were performed inside ordinary inhibited houses at monthly or fortnightly intervals. Presence of infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti proved Anopheles gambiae, A. funestus and A. nili to be the local vectors. Biting densities were high in th

Addressing health-harming legal needs in opioid treatment programs: Staff perspectives on implementing a medical-legal partnership.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid treatment programs (OTPs) serve highly marginalized populations who frequently experience civil legal challenges related to housing instability, employment discrimination, transportation barriers, public benefits denial, and child welfare involvement. Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) embed attorneys within healthcare settings to address health-harming legal needs, yet no studies have assessed their implementation in OTPs. Therefore, we solicited OTP staff perspectives on the idea of implementing an MLP in their facility. METHODS: We conducted virtual semi-structured inte…

Victims or perpetrators? Young mothers who survived intimate partner violence and their involvement with the child welfare system in Ontario.

Adolescent and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare experience multiple challenges, including high concentrations of poverty, housing instability, social isolation, mental health issues, and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about the lived experiences of young mothers involved with the child welfare system who have also encountered IPV. This study begins to address this gap by analyzing interview data of young mothers who had child welfare involvement in Ontario while pregnant or parenting and who noted experiencing IPV (n = 10). Interpretative phenomenolo…

Who Bears the Burden? Exploring Demographic Disparities in Drug-Related Nuisance Property Ordinances Across the United States.

Nuisance property ordinances are municipal laws that penalize property owners or renters for alleged criminal activity or repeated disturbances, including emergency calls. As these laws have expanded, concerns have grown that they may disproportionately impact marginalized populations, including people who use drugs, by targeting drug-related activities and exacerbating chronic housing instability. This study examines the demographic and municipal-level characteristics associated with the presence of drug-related nuisance property ordinances (DNPOs) across major U.S. municipalities. Municipal …
