This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 24 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus who underwent endoscopic third ventriculostomy. The patients were selected by the available sampling method, and the data was collected through a researcher-made checklist. Data were analyzed using SPSS-26 software. Among 24 patients, 62.5% were male and the mean age was 70.85 ± 9.1 years. The results showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between age (p value = 0.43) and sex (p value = 0.37) with the success and failure rate of the surgical method. There was a signif

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To examine the effect of delayed compared to early planning of shunt surgery on survival, in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a long-term follow-up case-control study of patients exposed to a severe delay of treatment was performed.
METHODS: In 2010-2011 our university hospital was affected by an administrative and economic failure that led to postponement of several elective neurosurgical procedures. This resulted in an unintentional delay of planning of treatment for a group of iNPH patients, referred to as iNPHDelayed (n = 33, waiting t

BACKGROUND: The workup for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) can be difficult to coordinate, and determining appropriate patients for ventriculoperitoneal shunting can be challenging. Therefore, we hypothesized that implementing a formalized protocol can improve patient selection for a shunt. In conjunction with neurology and neurosurgery, we instituted a standardized means of assessing patients whose presentation is concerning for INPH and compared their workup with similar patients seen without the Protocol (i.e., preprotocol [PP]) regarding baseline characteristics, assessment

Continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure is a well established medical procedure. Still, little is known about long-term behavior of intracranial pressure in normal pressure hydrocephalus. The present study is designed to evaluate periodicity of intracranial pressure over long-time scales using intraventricular pressure monitoring in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. In addition, the circadian and diurnal patterns of blood pressure and body temperature in those patients are studied. Four patients, selected with "probable" normal pressure hydrocephalus, were monitored for sever

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition affecting the elderly population and with costs associated with its surgical management reported to be less than those associated with conservative management.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the rate of diagnosis of NPH has improved over the last decade, the rate of treatment has increased, and if surgical treatment costs and socioeconomic factors related to receipt of treatment have changed over time compared with conservative therapy.
METHODS: A retrospective study based on data from a nationally re

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and vascular comorbidity increases with age. It has not been clarified if high age and vascular disease are negative predictors of shunt surgery outcome in patients with iNPH. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of high age and vascular comorbidity on outcome after shunt surgery in patients with iNPH.
METHODS: All 332 patients with iNPH who were treated with shunts between 2011 and 2015 at a single centre were consecutively included. Hellström iNPH scale, without the neuropsychological tests, was cal

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the cause of higher water fluctuation of the brain in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), we assessed change in hemodynamic-independent apparent diffusion coefficient during the cardiac cycle (ΔADC) in iNPH.
METHODS: Electrocardiographically synchronized single-shot diffusion echo-planer imaging (b = 0, 500, and 1000 s/mm2) was performed in healthy volunteers, atrophic ventricular dilation group, and iNPH group, respectively. The ΔADC (b = 0 and 1000 s/mm2) and maximum ADC (b = 0 and 500 s/mm2) in the cardiac cycles were measured at the frontal white matter

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a subtype of dementia that may be successfully treated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion. Recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using a MRI contrast agent as a CSF tracer revealed impaired clearance of the CSF tracer from various brain regions such as the entorhinal cortex of iNPH patients. Hampered clearance of waste solutes, for example, soluble amyloid-β, may underlie neurodegeneration and dementia in iNPH. The goal of the present study was to explore whether iNPH is associated with altered subcellular distribution of aquaporin-

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is an important and treatable cause of neurologic impairment. Diagnosis is complicated due to symptoms overlapping with other age related disorders. The pathophysiology underlying iNPH is not well understood. We explored FDG-PET abnormalities in iNPH patients in order to determine if FDG-PET may serve as a biomarker to differentiate iNPH from common neurodegenerative disorders.
METHODS: We retrospectively compared 18F-FDG PET-CT imaging patterns from seven iNPH patients (mean age 74 ± 6 years) to age and sex matched controls, as well

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) remains both oversuspected on clinical grounds and underconfirmed when based on immediate and sustained response to cerebrospinal fluid diversion. Poor long-term postshunt benefits and findings of neurodegenerative pathology in most patients with adequate follow-up suggest that hydrocephalic disorders appearing in late adulthood may often result from initially unapparent parenchymal abnormalities. We critically review the NPH literature, highlighting the near universal lack of blinding and controls, absence of specific clinical, imaging, or pathol

OBJECTIVE Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is characterized by ventriculomegaly, gait difficulty, incontinence, and dementia. The symptoms can be ameliorated by CSF drainage. The object of this study was to identify factors associated with shunt-responsive iNPH. METHODS The authors reviewed the medical records of 529 patients who underwent shunt placement for iNPH at their institution between July 2001 and March 2015. Variables associated with shunt-responsive iNPH were identified using bivariate and multivariate analyses. Detailed alcohol consumption information was obtained fo

OBJECTIVE There are several etiologies that can lead to the development of secondary normal pressure hydrocephalus (sNPH). The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome in patients with sNPH and to highlight important differences between the separate etiologies. METHODS A comprehensive review of the literature was performed to identify studies conducted between 1965 and 2015 that included data regarding the etiology, treatment, diagnosis, and outcome in patients with sNPH. Sixty-four studies with a total of 1309 patients were included. The inclusion crit

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a reversible neurologic disorder characterized by a triad of cognitive impairment, gait abnormality, and urinary incontinence that is commonly treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. However, multiple overlapping symptoms often make it difficult to differentiate normal pressure hydrocephalus from other types of dementia, and improved diagnostic techniques would help patient management. MR elastography is a novel diagnostic tool that could potentially identify patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The purpose of this stu

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a type of communicating hydrocephalus also known as non-obstructive hydrocephalus. This type of hydrocephalus is caused by impaired cerebrospinal fluid reabsorption without any obstruction in the ventricular system and is associated with normal cerebrospinal fluid pressure. It is characterised clinically by gait disturbance, cognitive dysfunction, and urinary incontinence (known as the Hakim-Adams triad). The exact cause of iNPH is unknown. It may be managed conservatively or treated surgically by inserting a ventriculoperitoneal (
