The estimation of urine bolus volume for patients with congenital hydronephrosis.

A new examination (bolusmetry) to evaluate the urine transport function of the ureteropelvic system was performed in 7 adult patients with congenital unilateral hydronephrosis. Whistle-tipped Fr. 5 catheters were introduced to each ureter about 5 cm proximal from the ureteral orifice by transurethral endoscopic technique. Bolus volume and frequency, and changes in them caused by furosemide injection, were estimated by using a drop counter which was connected to the terminal end of the ureteral catheter. Bolusmetry was performed comparing the hydronephrotic side and the healthy side, pre and po…

[A case of giant hydronephrosis and a review of 324 cases in the literature].

A case of giant hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction in an 18-year-old boy is reported. The patient had been told to undergo an operation for the left hydronephrosis at 2 years of age. However, he stayed away from hospital until he presented at our clinic with nausea caused by a large abdominal mass. Radiological evaluation revealed a left giant hydronephrosis with no function and slight compensatory hypertrophy in the right kidney. Left nephrectomy was performed and the pelvic capacity was approximately 7,700 ml. Histopathological examination showed muscular hyperplasia at…

Hydronephrosis caused by cystocele. Treatment by colpopexy to sacral promontory.

A case of marked bilateral hydroureteronephrosis due to extreme prolapse of the bladder is reported. This latter condition led also to obstructive urinary tract symptoms and residual urine. After repair of the cystocele in an unusual way by fixation of the vaginal vault to the sacral promontory, the caliber of the upper urinary tracts became almost normal and postvoiding residual urine disappeared.

Recurrent Left Ureterosciatic Herniation With Obstructive Hydronephrosis: A Case Report.

Uretero-sciatic herniation is an exceptionally rare cause of ureteric obstruction, resulting from herniation of the ureter via the sciatic foramen. A 66-year-old woman presented with left flank pain and deteriorating renal function. Computed tomography intravenous pyelogram (CT IVP) demonstrated severe left hydronephrosis secondary to herniation of the ureter through the left sciatic foramen. The patient then underwent successful renal decompression with an endoscopic retrograde ureteric stent placed. Subsequent trial of stent removal failed, with left uretero-sciatic herniation and renal obst…

Chronic expanding haematoma in the kidney following long-term hydronephrosis.

Chronic expanding haematoma is defined as a haematoma that gradually increases in size for ≥1 month. It is mostly related to trauma or surgery and can develop at any location in the body. Herein, we describe a case of a chronic expanding haematoma in the left kidney in a patient with a history of long-term hydronephrosis. The patient was a man in his 70 s who had undergone surgery for seminoma with lymph node metastasis 40 years prior. Following the procedure, he had been in an extended state of hydronephrosis. Computed tomography performed during the follow-up period revealed nodules in his p…

Giant right hydronephrosis with underlying double malignancy: a case report.

Giant hydronephrosis is mostly caused by ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). Giant hydronephrosis with concurrent malignancy is less common clinically and is easily misdiagnosed. We report a 77-year-old male who presented with sudden onset progressive abdominal distension in the last month. Abdominal computed tomography showed a right severe hydronephrotic kidney with loss of parenchymal thinning. Cystoscopy showed a 1x1cm papillary lesion protruding from the right ureteric orifice. He underwent a right radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision with lymph node dissection. Hi…

Rate of recurrent hydronephrosis after laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy for ureteral endometriosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate the short-term outcomes of laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy in patients with ureteral endometriosis (UE). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent surgery for the ureter endometriosis with hydronephrosis. SETTING: A private hospital that provide primary, secondary and tertiary care. PATIENTS: 30 consecutive patients with UE who underwent laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy at our institution between May 2008 and April 2020. INTERVENTIONS: Laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy, if necessary, hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, cyst…

Validation of modified diuretic drainage times criteria in congenital hydronephrosis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The value of diuretic renography drainage times in congenital hydronephrosis (AHN) decision making is controversial. Recently, a group suggested a modification to the classically described diuretic drainage time cut-off values. They found that a drainage half-time (T1/2) < 5 min was normal whereas a T1/2 exceeding 75 min predicted pyeloplasty. In addition, they reported on the benefit of a delayed drainage image obtained with gravity assistance. We sought to evaluate the ability of these modified T1/2 criteria to predict pyeloplasty, alone or in combination with a d…

Giant Invasive Sacral Schwannoma with Aortic Bifurcation Compression and Hydronephrosis.

BACKGROUND: Sacral schwannomas are rare tumors arising from nerve sheath Schwann cells. They are classified into 3 types: first type schwann … essing the ureters, aortic bifurcation, bladder, and bowel; and presenting as lower abdominal pain, hydronephrosis, dysuria, and constipation. This is the first case reported in the literature that has described a large retroperitoneal tumor compressing retroperitoneal structures-aortic bifurcation vascular compression and ureter compression causing hydronephros …

Evaluation of postoperative hydronephrosis following semirigid ureteroscopy: Incidence and predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Hydronephrosis developing following ureteroscopy (URS) is an important issue associated with the long-term postoperative renal functions. Studies investigating the role of postoperative imaging revealed conflicting results. In this study, we aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of hydronephrosis following semirigid URS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated the results of 455 patients who underwent U RS a nd postoperative imaging with non-contrast computed tomography (CT). Primary endpoints of the study were to determine the frequency of development of hydronephrosis and fa…

Polyuria-associated hydronephrosis induced by xenobiotic chemical exposure in mice.

Hydronephrosis is a commonly found disease state characterized by the dilation of renal calices and pelvis, resulting in the loss of kidney function in the severest cases. A generally accepted etiology of hydronephrosis involves the obstruction of urine flow along the urinary tract. In the recent years, we have developed a mouse model of hydronephrosis induced by lactational exposure to dioxin and demonstrated a lack of anatomical obstruction in this model. We also showed that prostaglandin E2 synthesis system plays a critical role in the onset of hydronephrosis. In the present study, we found…

Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome with Kasabach-Merritt Coagulopathy and Hydronephrosis.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome is a rare syndrome, consisting of vascular malformation of blood and lymph vessels. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A newborn female with respiratory distress from birth, and having vascular malformation involving left thigh. OBSERVATION: The neonate also had hydronephrosis and developed complication of Kasabach Merritt syndrome. MESSAGE: Urogenital abnormalities can be present in Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome but hydronephrosis is rare. Mortality is high with development of Kasabach Merritt syndrome.
