BACKGROUND: Although complications such as blister formation, erosion, and post-inflammatory hypo- and hyperpigmentation are well-known side effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) photoepilation, little is known about the paradoxical hypertrichosis after therapy.

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia is a rare disorder that unilaterally affects the maxilla causing facial asymmetry and presenting with hypertrichosis and hypoplastic or missing teeth in the affected area. Lip clefting has only been reported in one other case. We report a case of segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia presenting with hypertrichosis of the face, hyperlinear palms with faint erythema, and commissural lip clefting.

Thyroid diseases may be associated with a wide variety of dermatologic disorders. We report a 15-year-old girl with acquired ichthyosis and hypertrichosis associated with hypothyroidism resulting from autoimmune thyroiditis. Her skin lesions progressively resolved after 8 months of replacement therapy with L-thyroxine. This result supports the hypothesis that hypothyroidism in our patient can be directly related to the pathogenesis of acquired ichthyosis and hypertrichosis.

Four cases with multiple patches of nevoid hypertrichosis have been reported. This fifth patient had multiple patches of nevoid hypertrichosis that underwent almost complete spontaneous resolution. Areas of unaffected skin showed depigmentation that followed the lines of Blaschko.

To study a possible relationship between ciclosporin-induced hypertrichosis and sex hormone pattern, the hair growth in different areas of the body was graded and hormone levels were assayed before and up to 6 months after kidney transplantation. We report three cases of severe hypertrichosis in healthy infants, who did not present any type of endocrinological pathology and whose parents used topical minoxidil for the treatment of their baldness. Any type of direct application or administration of the product was ruled out. Hypertrichosis is considered to have occurred through skin-to-skin contact with the parent, and even through fomites. Given the widespread use of topical minoxidil, it is likely that this etiology of childhood hypertrichosis is underdiagnosed and that it sometimes leads to minimal forms that go unnoticed.

After 4 months of therapy with secukinumab, a 67-year-old man with moderate psoriasis developed generalized hypertrichosis, along with PASI 90. The patient denied any drug intake, apart from secukinumab, nor applications of any creams. Moreover, this event did not really bother the patient, thus the therapy was not discontinued and the hypertrichosis is persisting as psoriasis' control.

We report on a new case of a syndrome first described by Cantú et al. [1982: Hum Genet 60:36-41] comprising congenital hypertrichosis, "coarse" facial appearance, and mild osteochondrodysplasia.
