PURPOSE: To document the association of neurohypophyseal dysgenesis with hypopituitarism in a child with primary bilateral anophthalmia.
METHODS: An infant with bilateral anophthalmia underwent magnetic resonance imaging and endocrinologic evaluation.
RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging showed dysgenesis confined to the hypothalamus and hypophyseal stalk. Endocrinologic testing showed low serum cortisol and pituitary gonadotropin levels.
CONCLUSION: Magnetic resonance imaging can help predict which children with anophthalmia will have endocrinologic deficiencies.

A 56 year old mentally disabled woman of short stature was admitted to our hospital because of severe chest pain and dyspnoea. An extended myocardial infarction in the anterior wall was clinically found and confirmed by autopsy. We have reported a case of partial hypopituitarism involving deficient ACTH, LH, FSH, and growth hormone production and elevated prolactin. The hypopituitarism was caused by injury to the pituitary resulting from a parachute accident without direct craniocerebral trauma. The pathogenesis of this pituitary injury as either a clivus fracture near the sella, unilated abstruction of the internal carotid artery, and/or direct stalk injury. Clinicians should be alerted to the possibility of hypopituitarism from direct or indirect cranial injuries.
