Acculturative stress in Latin-American immigrants: an assessment proposal.

The aim of this paper was to develop an instrument to assess levels of stress experienced by Latin-American immigrants in their acculturative process in Spain. A sample of 692 immigrants from Latin America, aged 20 to 63 years, took part on this study (54.9% males and 45.1% females). A 24-item questionnaire with high reliability (.92) was elaborated. Six factors related to acculturative stress were found: 1) discrimination and rejection; 2) differences with the out-group (native Spaniards); 3) citizenship problems and legality; 4) problems concerning social relationships with other immigrants;

Mothers and their disabled children: refining the concept of normalization.

Normalization refers to behaviors and intentions of the disabled to integrate into society by living life as do those without a disability. Although normal is assumed to be a desired state, the concept has not been explored from the perspective of disabled children and mothers and other family members. The objective of this study is to determine "what is normal" from the perspective of the person with the disability. Participant observation was conducted in a 6-day summer camp for 17 children with chronic, severe, life-threatening physical disabilities. The children normally received home care

Construction of a Risk Identification Model Based on Electrolytes and Related Factors for Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy: A Secondary Analysis of Clinical Trial Data.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is one of the most common symptoms during early gestation. A subset of affected women may progress to severe NVP, which is frequently accompanied by electrolyte disturbances, impaired nutritional status, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the relationships between multiple electrolyte-related factors and the severity of NVP have not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To explore the statistical associations between multiple electrolytes, related laboratory indicators, and NVP severity, and to develop a risk identification model

Occupational stress and occupational well-being among rural preschool teachers: a moderated mediation model of job burnout and professional identity.

INTRODUCTION: The occupational well-being of rural preschool teachers is important for their professional development, mental health, and the quality of preschool education. However, persistent resource constraints in rural education may pose challenges to teachers' occupational well-being. This study examined the association between occupational stress and occupational well-being among rural preschool teachers, focusing on the indirect role of job burnout and the moderating role of professional identity. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among 3,228 rural preschoo

Do Identity Processes and Psychosocial Problems Intertwine with Each Other? Testing the Directionality of Between- and Within-Person Associations.

As forming and evaluating commitments are stressful processes, adolescents who worry about their identity may exhibit psychosocial problems. However, there is a lack of prospective research regarding the direction of associations between the processes of identity and psychosocial problems in the future domain. This study examined the direction of relationships between future-oriented identity processes and psychosocial problems based on a five-dimensional identity process model. A total of 347 Japanese 14-year-old adolescents (53.3% female) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with

Not a victim: How self-deception saved David.

This paper summarizes a course of psychotherapy in which the therapist integrated concepts and strategies from psychoanalytic and cognitive-behavioral orientations in treating a gay man with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder and a history of sexual abuse. The article highlights the psychologically protective function that deception served in the treatment of this patient, and how the therapist navigated the fragility of these inner fictions. Further, it illustrates the way in which the therapist-patient dynamic was colored by a psychoanalytic process known as projective identification.

An examination of ethnic identity as a mediator of the effects of community participation and neighborhood sense of community on psychological empowerment among urban youth of color.

Empowerment research has made important contributions toward understanding youth development, well-being, and activism; however, it has failed to consider the impact that ethnic identity has on psychological empowerment (PE) and among related empowerment predictors (e.g., community participation and neighborhood sense of community [SOC]). The present study focuses on examining the mediating role of ethnic identity between community participation, neighborhood SOC, and PE. Using structural equation modeling path analysis techniques among a sample of Hispanic and Black youth (N = 1,480) from an

The enemy as animal: Symmetric dehumanization during asymmetric warfare.

Historically, dehumanization has enabled members of advantaged groups to 'morally disengage' from disadvantaged group suffering, thereby facilitating acts of intergroup aggression such as colonization, slavery and genocide. But is blatant dehumanization exclusive to those at the top 'looking down', or might disadvantaged groups similarly dehumanize those who dominate them? We examined this question in the context of intergroup warfare in which the disadvantaged group shoulders a disproportionate share of casualties and may be especially likely to question the humanity of the advantaged group.

Non-suicidal self-injury in high school students: Associations with identity processes and statuses.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) refers to the direct, deliberate destruction of one's body tissue without suicidal intent. Research has highlighted the importance of identity synthesis versus confusion for NSSI. However, the association with identity processes and statuses remains unknown. A total of 568 adolescents reported on NSSI, identity, anxiety, and depression. Although identity processes of identification with commitment (negatively) and ruminative exploration (positively) were related to NSSI variables, these relationships were no longer significant when controlling for anxiety and de

Donor conceived offspring conceive of the donor: the relevance of age, awareness, and family form.

Rarely have donor conceived offspring been studied. Recently, it has become more common for parents to disclose the nature of conception to their offspring. This new development raises questions about the donor's place in the offspring's life and identity. Using surveys collected by the Donor Sibling Registry, the largest U.S. web-based registry, during a 15 week period from October 2009 to January 2010, we found that donor offspring view the donor as a whole person, rather than as simple genetic material (he can know you; he has looks; he can teach you about yourself); they also believe that

The contribution of behavioural science to primary care research: development and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.

Behavioural science is concerned with predicting, explaining and changing behaviour. Taking a personal perspective, this article aims to show how behavioural science can contribute to primary care research, specifically in relation to the development and evaluation of interventions to change behaviour. After discussing the definition and measurement of behaviour, the principle of compatibility and theories of behaviour change, the article outlines two examples of behaviour change trials (one on medication adherence and the other on physical activity), which were part of a research programme on

Discrimination and mental health among Somali refugee adolescents: the role of acculturation and gender.

This study examines the role of social identity (acculturation and gender) in moderating the association between discrimination and Somali adolescent refugees' mental health. Participants were English-speaking Somali adolescent refugees between the ages of 11 and 20 (N = 135). Perceived discrimination, trauma history, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and behavioral acculturation were assessed in structured interviews. Fourteen in-depth qualitative interviews and 3 focus groups were also conducted. Results indicated that discrimination was common and associated with wo

The green-eyed monster and malicious joy: the neuroanatomical bases of envy and gloating (schadenfreude).

Facing a protagonist's emotional mental state can trigger social emotions (or 'fortune of others' emotion), such as envy or gloating, which reflect one's assessment of the consequences of the other's fortune. Here we suggest that these social emotions are mediated by the mentalizing network. The present article explores the notion that the understanding of social competitive emotions is particularly impaired in patients with ventromedial (VM) prefrontal lesions. By manipulating a simple Theory of Mind (ToM) task, we tested the ability of patients with localized lesions to understand 'fortune o

The invisible body of queer youth: identity and health in the margins of lesbian and trans communities.

How does complexity in gender and sexual identity construction and partnering practices generate unique vulnerabilities for queer-identified youth? We present two case studies from an ongoing ethnographic study of LGBTQ youth development: "Samantha," a queer-identified woman partnered with a transgender man, and "Reid," a queer-identified transgender man who has declined medical gender transitioning and who partners with lesbians and gay men. We consider the implications of these youths' locations on the margins of both lesbian and transgender communities and the challenges in providing health

Self-concept as a factor in the quality of diets of adolescent girls.

The effect of self-concept on the quality of diets of adolescent girls was investigated. Scores for self-concept as measured by the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) and fat area values were obtained from 160 15-year-old girls. Twenty-four-hour dietary recall interviews were conducted with a random subsample of 40 girls. Mean dietary adequacy ratios (MARs) were calculated to assess dietary quality. Girls in this study had larger arm fat areas than did their national counterparts. Mean intakes of energy and nine nutrients met or exceeded their respective RDAs except for vitamin A, calcium, an

Gender weighting of DSM-III-R personality disorder criteria.

This study explored the gender weighting of the diagnostic criteria for personality disorders. Gender weighting was defined in terms of how 33 female and 17 male nonclinicians ranked the diagnostic criteria along a male-female dimension. Although the a priori expectation was that antisocial would be the prototypically masculine personality disorder and histrionic the feminine, the subjects ranked criteria from the sadistic category as the most masculine and those from the dependent category as the most feminine. These results and the subjects' gender weighting of criteria for borderline, obses

Pulsatile luteinizing hormone release and ovarian steroid levels in female-to-male transsexuals compared to heterosexual women.

It has been suggested that there is a difference in the interaction between sex steroids and gonadotropin secretion between transsexual and heterosexual women. In this study we tested whether there is a difference in the pulsatile release characteristics of luteinizing hormone (LH) and in ovarian steroid concentrations between 16 female-to-male (f-to-m) transsexuals and eight eugonadal heterosexual women during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Blood samples for LH determination were collected every 10 min for 7 hr in the transsexual group, and every 10 min for 6 hr in the het
