Fetal effects of primary and secondary cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy.

Seroconversion to cytomegalovirus (CMV) occurs in 1-4% of pregnant women. The majority of these women are seropositive prior to pregnancy. In 0.2-2.5% of the newborn infants, there is evidence of intrauterine infection, most of them are born without any clinical findings. The typical clinical symptoms of congenital CMV (symptomatic congenital CMV) that are found in 10-20% of infected neonates include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), microcephaly, hepatosplenomegaly, petechiae, jaundice, chorioretinitis, thrombocytopenia, anemia and/or other atypical findings. Of special problem are the

Response to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Initial Series and Additional Dose Vaccine in Patients With Predominant Antibody Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in patients with predominant antibody deficiency (PAD) is associated with high morbidity, yet data regarding the response to SARS-CoV-2 immunization in PAD patients, including additional dose vaccine, are limited. OBJECTIVE: To characterize antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in PAD patients and define correlates of vaccine response. METHODS: We assessed the levels and function of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 62 PAD patients compared with matched healthy controls at baseline, at 4 to 6 weeks after the ini

Adverse events following immunisation: Prospective cohort study evaluating Australian children presenting to specialist immunisation clinics.

OBJECTIVE: Prior experience of an adverse event following immunisation is a known barrier to vaccination. Limited Australian data evaluating adverse event recurrence among children exists to inform clinical decisions. We aimed to assess adverse event following immunisation recurrence among children with prior adverse events and to evaluate if family history increased adverse event risk. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from March 3rd until August 18th, 2023. Children ≤ 16 years with prior adverse events following immunisation in themselves or family were recruited from specia

Cost-based COVID-19 vaccination and willingness to pay: A post-pandemic review.

The primary objective of this paper is to serve as a valuable resource for policymakers who are confronted with the evolving landscape of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), considering both free and cost-based vaccination approaches. The potential consequences of shifting from free to cost-based vaccination are explored, encompassing its impact on global vaccine equity and prioritization, economic well-being, healthcare systems and delivery, public health policies, and vaccine distribution strategies. Examining past studies on willingness to pay for the initial COVID-19 vaccine dose and

Revisiting the Chingleput BCG vaccination trial for the impact of BCG revaccination on the incidence of tuberculosis disease.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Vaccines play a crucial role in the prevention of tuberculosis (TB). Revaccination with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) for the prevention of TB is an important strategy that is currently gaining interest. The objective of this study was to reanalyze the community-based Chingleput BCG vaccination trial for protective efficacy of BCG revaccination against incident TB disease. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Chingleput BCG vaccination trial (conducted in 1968) data was carried out. Data on participants with evidence of prior BCG vaccination at trial intake and ra

Periodicity of varicella-zoster virus in the presence of immune boosting and clinical reinfection with varicella.

BACKGROUND: Clinical reinfection with varicella is normally ignored in mathematical transmission models as it is considered too rare to be important. METHODS: We apply basic bifurcation analysis to a simple mathematical model of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) transmission incorporating reinfection. RESULTS: We demonstrate that under certain conditions this model can exhibit periodic behaviour as opposed to what is observed in VZV models that ignore the possibility of repeat varicella attacks. Periodicity can be induced by a combination of immune boosting and reinfection while the impact of zos

Vaccine against tuberculosis: what's new?

BACKGROUND: one of the World Health Organization Millennium Development Goal is to reduce tuberculosis incidence by 2015. However, more of 8.5 million tuberculosis cases have been reported in 2011, with an increase of multidrug-resistant strains. Therefore, the World Health Organization target cannot be reach without the help of a vaccine able to limit the spread of tuberculosis. Nowadays, bacille Calmette-Guérin is the only vaccine available against tuberculosis. It prevents against meningeal and disseminated tuberculosis in children, but its effectiveness against pulmonary form in adolescent

Prokaryotic Expression of Eimeria magna SAG10 and SAG11 Genes and the Preliminary Evaluation of the Effect of the Recombinant Protein on Immune Protection in Rabbits.

Eimeria magna is a common coccidia in the intestines of rabbits, causing anorexia, weight loss, diarrhea, and bloody stools. This study cloned and determined the expression levels of four Eimeria surface antigens (EmSAGs) at different developmental stages and showed that EmSAG10 and EmSAG11 are highly expressed at the merozoite stage. Rabbits were immunized with rEmSAG10 and rEmSAG11, and then challenged with E. magna after 2 weeks. Serum-specific antibodies and cytokine levels were detected using ELISA. Immune protection was evaluated based on the rate of the oocysts decrease, the output of o

Trivalent immunization with metal-binding proteins confers protection against enterococci in a mouse infection model.

Enterococcus faecalis is ranked among the top five bacterial pathogens responsible for catheter-associated urinary tract infections, wound infections, secondary root canal infections, and infective endocarditis. Previously, we showed that inactivation of either the manganese- and iron-binding (EfaA) or zinc-binding (AdcA and AdcAII) lipoproteins significantly reduced E. faecalis virulence. Here, we explored whether immunization using a multi-valent approach induces protective immunity against systemic enterococcal infections. We found that multi-antigen antisera raised against EfaA, AdcA, and

Immune response after rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis and a booster dose in Australian bat carers.

Periodic vaccination against rabies is essential for individuals at continuing risk of rabies exposure. There is limited evidence on long-term immunogenicity after a 3-dose intramuscular (3IM) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and single IM booster dose, thus current guideline recommendations differ in the interval for serology tests following PrEP and boosters. This study investigated post-PrEP and post-booster persistence of antibodies in Australian bat carers. Bat carers who received 3IM PrEP/booster doses and had post-PrEP/booster serology test results were included. The proportion of antibo

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Switzerland: does the prolongation of vaccine booster intervals result in an increased risk of breakthroughs?

BACKGROUND: In 2006, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) decided recommending a prolongation of vaccine booster intervals after the third dose for the prevention of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) from 3 to 10 years. METHODS: To ascertain whether this amendment resulted in an increased rate of vaccine breakthroughs, we conducted a retrospective analysis of surveillance data collected 2000-19 by mandatory reporting to the Swiss FOPH. Fractions of breakthroughs [with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)]-0-3 years vs >3-10 years after the third vaccination dose-were compared across time pe
