Nowadays, numerous studies have focused on the newly developed technologies for the thorough removal of tetracyclines (TCs). However, it is often ignored that the parent TCs have limited stability in aquatic environments. Thus, this study selected green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with high chlorophyll content to rapidly degrade chlortetracycline (CTC) into products with low toxicity. As the results shown, the half-life times of CTC (1 × 10-6 mol/L) decreased from 10.35 h to 2.55 h by the presence of C. reinhardtii at 24±1 °C with 12/12 h dark/light cycle. The main transformation products w

A functioning olfactory response is essential for fish to be able to undertake essential behaviors. The majority of work investigating the effects of metals on the olfactory response of fish has focused on single-metal exposures. In this study we exposed rainbow trout to cadmium, copper, nickel, zinc, or a mixture of these four metals at or below the current Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. Measurement of olfactory acuity using an electro-olfactogram demonstrated that cadmium causes significant impairment of the entire olfactory sy

In humans and rodents, phenobarbital (PB) induces hepatic and extra-hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) through the activation of specific nuclear receptors (NRs). In contrast, few data about PB transcriptional effects in veterinary species are available. The constitutive expression and modulation of PB-responsive NR and DME genes, following an oral PB challenge, were investigated in cattle liver and extra-hepatic tissues (duodenum, kidney, lung, testis, adrenal and muscle). Likewise to humans and rodents, target genes were expressed to a lower extent compared to the liver with few except

BACKGROUND: Methadone is prescribed in France as a maintenance treatment for heroin dependence since 1969. Nevertheless, the optimal duration of methadone maintenance treatment and how detoxification from methadone at the end of the treatment should be performed is still discussed.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a literature review on when and how detoxify clients from methadone maintenance treatment and to collect the opinion of experts in the field. DOCUMENTARY SOURCES: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO databases on the 1966-2011 period using the keywords "methadone", "ma

The polychaete worms Marenzelleria viridis (Verrill 1873) and Hediste diversicolor (O.F. Müller) form the main part of the macro-zoobenthos in soft-bottomed shallow inlets of the Baltic Sea. Due to high eutrophication within these waters the animals are exposed to low oxygen and high sulphide concentrations. Specimens of both species from a low salinity location (S 8/1000) were compared concerning their physiological abilities in coping with this hostile environment. Sulphide detoxification occurred in both polychaetes even during severe hypoxia with the main end-product being thiosulphate. In

Gilbert's syndrome, an hereditary, chronic, mild, unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia resulting from impaired hepatic bilirubin clearance and otherwise normal liver function, is arguably the most common syndrome known in humans. Recent molecular genetic studies have determined that the clinical phenotype can be described by a dinucleotide polymorphism in the TATA box promoter of the bilirubin uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT-1A1) gene, most frequently (TA)7TAA, affecting up to 36% of Africans, but only 3% of Asians. However, a second common heterozygous mutation in the coding exon

The results of kinetic experiments measuring the effects of a variety of ligands on the sulfur-cyanolysis reaction catalyzed by serum albumin point to the conclusion that the active site for cyanolysis is on subdomain 3-AB. Relationships among the inhibition by short-chain fatty acids, the activation by p-nitrophenyl acetate, and the influence of bilirubin and L-tryptophan on these effects indicate that the cyanolysis active site and the known primary binding site for indoles are both near, but on opposite sides of, tyrosine-409 of bovine albumin (tyrosine-411 of human albumin).

After interaction with human macrophages derived from blood, bone marrow or spleen, solutions of sodium phenobarbitone, phenytoin sodium and chlorpromazine hydrochloride showed reduced cytotoxicity towards K562 cells. The reduction in cytotoxicity was partially suppressed in the presence of tetrahydrofurane, an inhibitor of cytochrome P450. These data suggest that macrophages are capable of metabolizing certain drugs, probably via a cytochrome P450-dependent mechanism. The present findings raise the possibility that some drug-induced blood dyscrasias are caused by metabolism of the drug by bon

Despite the vast literature on drug dependence, little has been written about patients who become addicted while taking medically prescribed drugs for organic pathology. Observations from a psychiatric consultation-liaison service reveal that these patients are frequently middle-aged with no history of drug abuse before the onset of a chronic medical condition. Associated with their medical condition is a dependence on narcotics and/or psychotropic medications for such complaints as pain, headache, insomnia, and anxiety. Thea addiction may persist for years without acknowledgement by a patient

The mode of breakdown of sodium nitroprusside (NPN) is described and the fact is pointed out that cyanide is formed during the process. The main mode of detoxication leads to the production of thiocyanate. Potential effects of cyanide formation are: blocking of cytochrome oxidase and carbonic anhydrase and cyanmethaemoglobin. The clinical features of NPN poisoning are reviewed. The importance of preventing NPN poisoning by strictly adhering to the maximun doses (1.5mg/kg bodyweight) is emphasized. Anti-dose are; injections of hydroxycobalamin (22.4 mg/mg NPN) and sodium thiosulfate (5.0 mg/mg

Sarcopenia is defined by a reduction in both muscle strength and mass. Sarcopenia may be an inevitable component of the aging process, but it may also be accelerated by comorbidities and metabolic derangements. The underlying mechanisms contributing to these pathological changes remain poorly understood. We propose that chronic inflammation-mediated networks and metabolic defects that exacerbate muscle dysfunction are critical factors in sarcopenia and related diseases. Consequently, utilizing specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) that function through specific G-protein coupled receptors

Since most of the drugs are taken orally via the gastrointestinal tract, interactions with food ingredients may lead to alterations in the intake of essential dietary factors. With regard to vitamins the following effects have been demonstrated: early decomposition resp. inactivation, decreased absorption or a qualitatively and quantitatively modified metabolism. Examples of such changes are given with regard to water- and lipid-soluble vitamins.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Paratyphi A are the cause of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in humans, which are systemic life-threatening illnesses. Both serovars are exclusively adapted to the human host, where they can cause life-long persistent infection. A distinct feature of these serovars is the presence of a relatively high number of degraded coding sequences coding for metabolic pathways, most likely a consequence of their adaptation to a single host. As a result of convergent evolution, these serovars shared many of the degraded coding sequences although often affecting differen

The ribosome is centrally situated to sense metabolic states, but whether its activity, in turn, coherently rewires transcriptional responses is unknown. Here, through integrated chemical-genetic analyses, we found that a dominant transcriptional effect of blocking protein translation in cancer cells was inactivation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1), a multifaceted transcriptional regulator of the heat-shock response and many other cellular processes essential for anabolic metabolism, cellular proliferation, and tumorigenesis. These analyses linked translational flux to the regulation of HSF1 tra

The metabolism of CS2 proceeds by two distinct metabolic pathways, direct reaction with amine or thiol functions of cellular constituents, and microsomal oxidation to reactive intermediates that covalently bind to cell macromolecules. Reaction with amines or thiols may alter protein function by two primary mechanisms: formation of dithiocarbamate metabolites capable of inactivating metalloenzymes by chelation of metal ions such as copper and zinc, and direct reaction with such functional groups on proteins. Both of these mechanisms may contribute to CS2-induced neurotoxicity. Formation of reac

Gut symbiotic bacteria are highly dynamic and contribute to digestion, development, immunity, detoxification, and environmental adaptation in insect hosts. In fruit-sucking moths (FSM), particularly Eudocima materna (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), adults are destructive frugivorous pests, whereas larvae feed exclusively on toxic plants such as Tinospora cordifolia. This study investigates the gut bacterial diversity of FSM larvae, with an emphasis on their role in host plant adaptation. Nine bacterial strains were isolated, including Enterobacter hormaechei, Klebsiella aerogenes, Mammaliicoccus sciu

Pronounced sex-specific differences exist in the toxicological traits of spider mite species. Our previous work showed that female Tetranychus cinnabarinus exhibit significantly higher tolerance to acaricides than males, primarily driven by elevated detoxification enzyme activity. However, the molecular basis underlying this sex-specific difference remains unclear. Here, we used pyridaben and cyflumetofen as representative acaricides to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying sex-specific differences in detoxification metabolism between female and male mites. After 48 h of cyflumetofen exp

Citrus red mites (P. citri) are key pests affecting citrus production worldwide due to pesticide resistance. The resistance mechanisms of ten pesticides are known, but a comprehensive study using transcriptome data is missing. This study employed deeptools, cuffdiff, rmats, bcftools and other software to examine gene expression variation, alternative splicing (AS), and mutations in mite resistance. The research highlighted that pesticides can regulate gene transcription, and red mites with resistance increase cytochrome P450, glutathione S-transferases, carboxylesterase, and acetylcholinestera
