Adaptation of New Colombian Food-based Complementary Feeding Recommendations Using Linear Programming.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to use linear programming (LP) analyses to adapt New Complementary Feeding Guidelines (NCFg) designed fo … tested ensured population-level dietary adequacy for thiamine, niacin, and iron unless a fortified infant food was recommended. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated the value of using LP to adapt NCFg for a different age group than the one for which they were designed. Our analyses suggest that to ensure dietary adequacy for 12- to 23-month olds thes …

Eating the rainbow early: Food diversity in infancy and the risk of atopic dermatitis in 267,935 Korean children.

BACKGROUND: Early introduction of diverse foods may be associated with a lower risk of atopic dermatitis (AD), yet the evidence remains limited by small cohort sizes and subjective recall bias. We aimed to examine this association using a large, nationwide population-based cohort. METHODS: This cohort study utilized the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (267,935 infants born 2009-2010). Food diversity at 12 months (six food groups) was categorized as low (0-2), moderate (3-4), or high (5-6). The primary outcome was incident AD, ascertained from the index date through the end o

An evaluation of infant growth: the use and interpretation of anthropometry in infants. WHO Working Group on Infant Growth.

In reviewing the growth of infants who live under favourable conditions and are fed according to WHO feeding recommendations, the Working Group found significant differences between the growth patterns of these infants and the patterns reflected in the NCHS-WHO international reference. Given the short- and long-term consequences of growth failure, and the dangers of both the premature introduction of complementary foods and their undue delay--described as the "weanling's dilemma", the Working Group concluded that use of the current NCHS-WHO reference appears to accentuate the difficulty of avo

Food allergies.

Adverse reactions to foods are commonly implicated in the causation of ill health. However, foreign antigens, including food proteins and commensal microbes encountered in the gastrointestinal tract, are usually well tolerated. True food allergies, implying immune-mediated adverse responses to food antigens, do exist, however, and are especially common in infants and young children. Allergic reactions to food manifest clinically in a variety of presentations involving the gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and respiratory systems and in generalized reactions such as anaphylaxis. Both IgE-mediated an

Association of Revised WIC Food Package With Perinatal and Birth Outcomes: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

IMPORTANCE: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) serves more than one-quarter of pregnant and postpartum women. In October 2009, the WIC food package underwent revisions to improve nutritional content. No studies have investigated the downstream effects of this revision on maternal and infant health. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the revised WIC food package improved perinatal and birth outcomes among recipients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences analysis, comparing WIC recipients (t

Reflections on infant feeding in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1985 35% of US infants were breast-fed until at least age 4 mo whereas in 1971 the corresponding figure was only 10%. Breast-feeding is less common among lower income than among higher income groups. In 1985 10% of infants aged 6 mo were fed fresh fluid cow milk--down from 70% in 1971. Most formula-fed infants receive iron-fortified formulas (12 mg Fe/L). Beikost is now commonly fed to infants less than age 2 mo. The Infant Formula Act of 1980 resulted in promulgation of new quality control and labelling requirements for infant formulas. Over the past 15 y, salt and sugar concentrations of

Anaphylaxis: Unique aspects of clinical diagnosis and management in infants (birth to age 2 years).

In this rostrum we aim to increase awareness of anaphylaxis in infancy in order to improve clinical diagnosis, management, and prevention of recurrences. Anaphylaxis is increasingly reported in this age group. Foods are the most common triggers. Presentation typically involves the skin (generalized urticaria), the respiratory tract (cough, wheeze, stridor, and dyspnea), and/or the gastrointestinal tract (persistent vomiting). Tryptase levels are seldom increased because of infant anaphylaxis, although baseline tryptase levels can be increased in the first few months of life, reflecting mast ce

Association Between Earlier Introduction of Peanut and Prevalence of Peanut Allergy in Infants in Australia.

IMPORTANCE: Randomized clinical trials showed that earlier peanut introduction can prevent peanut allergy in select high-risk populations. This led to changes in infant feeding guidelines in 2016 to recommend early peanut introduction for all infants to reduce the risk of peanut allergy. OBJECTIVE: To measure the change in population prevalence of peanut allergy in infants after the introduction of these new guidelines and evaluate the association between early peanut introduction and peanut allergy. DESIGN: Two population-based cross-sectional samples of infants aged 12 months were recruite

The history of infant nutrition.

OBJECTIVE: To retrace the history of infant nutrition with the objective of better understanding breastfeeding. SOURCES OF DATA: Bibliographic searches were run on MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, and the Internet. Encyclopedias, scientific textbooks and books for the general public, in addition to literature, art and history, were also used. Texts on child care from several different periods were consulted, in addition to the history of medicine and recent scientific articles on infant nutrition. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: During the preindustrial period, customs varied little and the likelihood of s

Regulating fatty acids in infant formula: critical assessment of U.S. policies and practices.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acids in breast-milk such as docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid, commonly known as DHA and ARA, contribute to the healthy development of children in various ways. However, the manufactured versions that are added to infant formula might not have the same health benefits as those in breast-milk. There is evidence that the manufactured additives might cause harm to infants' health, and they might lead to unwarranted increases in the cost of infant formula. The addition of such fatty acids to infant formula needs to be regulated. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administrati

Thermal resistance of Francisella tularensis in infant formula and fruit juices.

Francisella tularensis is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal or oropharyngeal tularemia from ingestion of contaminated food or water. Despite the potential for accidental or intentional contamination of foods with F. tularensis, little information exists on the thermal stability of this organism in food matrices. In the present study, the thermal resistance of the live vaccine strain of F. tularensis in four food products (liquid infant formula, apple juice, mango juice, and orange juice) was investigated. D-values ranged from 12 s (57.5 degrees C) to 580 s (50 degrees C

Non-breast milk feeding in developing countries: challenge from microbial and chemical contaminants.

Complementary foods based on cow's milk or gruels consumed by children in developing countries are often contaminated by bacteria during preparation, and ambient temperature rapidly increases microbial load. Thus infant formula or other weaning foods may cause diarrhea in young infants accounting for 25-33% of all deaths <5 years globally. Environmental chemicals such as metals (As, Pb, Cu) and nitrates can cause vomiting/diarrhea. Polychlorinated biphenyls derived from plastics, present in formula and/or breast milk, are endocrine disruptors (the potential threats are not fully quantifiable).

Developing a Cas12a-based detection method on the emetic Bacillus cereus strains in infant formulas.

Emetic Bacillus cereus is a significant foodborne pathogen typically causing gastrointestinal disorders in adults, but the toxin production and antimicrobial resistance could lead to more severe or even fatal outcomes in infants. Given its emergence in infant foods and the high virulence potential, a rapid and sensitive detection of this significant microbial hazard is urgently required. Here, we developed a Cas12a-based detection method by targeting ces (cereulide toxin synthetase) and gyrB genes of the emetic Bacillus cereus strains. This method effectively differentiated the ces-carried Bac…

Infant blood pressure and heart rate: relation to ethnic group (black or white), nutrition and electrolyte intake.

Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate were measured during non-rapid-eye-movement sleep in 392 full-term newborns and in 318 of these infants at age six months. Two-day records of food intake were collected at age six months for 150 infants. Black babies did not differ substantially in BP from white babies either at birth or at six months. The earliest BP tracking was from age six to 15 months (systolic (SBP): r = .29, p less than .001; diastolic:r = .45, p less than .001). No relationship was found between BP at six months and breast- or bottle-feeding, infant weight or weight change, or nutrien

Mycotoxins Exposure in Cabinda, Angola-A Pilot Biomonitoring Survey of Breastmilk.

Breast milk is considered the ideal form of nutrition for newborns and infants. However, it can carry over contaminants, namely mycotoxins, with biological effects to which this population is particularly vulnerable. Human biomonitoring and surveillance programs are particularly scarce in low-income countries, where food security is a more urgent priority in comparison with food safety. This pilot survey aims to assess exposure of breastfed infants to aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), zearalenone (ZEN), and ochratoxin A (OTA) in Angola, and to evaluate the main socio-demographical and food consumption dete

The iron content of healthy diets for one day for breastfed babies and young children.

AIMS: Early childhood anaemia due to iron deficiency is widespread in remote communities across northern Australia. Current recommendations for healthy food to complement breastfeeding at age 6 to 23 months include iron-rich and iron-enriched foods. An electronic nutrient analysis was undertaken to assess the iron content of hypothetical healthy diets for breastfed babies and young children aged 6 to 23 months in Australia, in comparison with their estimated requirements. METHODS: Hypothetical diets for 1 day were developed that were consistent with the Foundation Diets for breastfed infants

Risk factors for food insecurity and association with prenatal care utilization among women who took opioids during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with poorer outcomes for both mothers and their newborns. Given the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States, mothers who take opioids during pregnancy may be at particular risk of experiencing food insecurity. METHODS: This research utilized data from 254 biological mothers of infants in the Advancing Clinical Trials in Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (ACT NOW) Outcomes of Babies with Opioid Exposure (OBOE) Study. We examined factors associated with food insecurity among mothers of infants with antenatal opioid exposure and the

Iron requirements in infancy.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency worldwide and infants constitute a risk group due to their high iron requirements. Iron is critical for brain development, and case control studies have shown a consistent association between iron deficiency anemia in infancy and poor neurodevelopment, suggesting that it is important to prevent iron deficiency anemia in infants. However, it is also important to avoid excessive iron intakes which may have adverse effects on growth. Due to redistribution of iron from hemoglobin to iron stores, healthy, term, normal birth weight i
