Protective role of human milk against sudden death from infant botulism.

We examined the possibility that human milk and formula milk might differentially affect the severity of the infant botulism because they differ in immunologic composition and in influence on the normal intestinal microflora against which Clostridium botulinum must compete. A beneficial effect of human milk was suggested by the different feeding experiences of the moderate, hospitalized patients and the sudden death cases. Of patients hospitalized in California, 66% (33/50) were still being nursed at onset of illness, a percentage significantly greater than that of matched controls (P less tha

[Phosphorus and calcium metabolism of premature infants fed human milk and formulated milk].

Development of rickets in vitamin-D supplemented very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants can be associated with low Phosphorus (P) and Calcium (Ca) intake. Therefore, we estimated P and Ca intake of three VLBW-infants who were fed pooled human milk after birth and then switched to an adapted formula. We measured P, Ca, activity of alkaline phosphatase and parathormone in serum and P and Ca excretion in urine. P and Ca intake was below the estimated requirement for prematures with pooled human milk as well as with the adapted formula, on the other hand, Ca and especially P intake increased when inf

Effectiveness of iron-fortified infant cereal in prevention of iron deficiency anemia.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency continues to be a common problem among infants throughout the world. Iron-fortified formula is effective in prev … onths of age. Rice cereal was fortified with 55 mg of electrolytic iron per 100 g of dry cereal and infant formula with 12 mg of ferrous sulfate per 100 g of dry powder, levels approximating those in use in the United States. Measures of iron status were obtained at 8, 12, and 15 months. Infants with hemoglobin levels of < 105 g/L were excluded from the study an …

The natural history of neonatal jaundice.

The relationship between infant feeding type and the occurrence and natural history of neonatal jaundice in term newborn infants has been studied. A retrospective chart review of 124 records confirmed earlier reports indicating that jaundice is recognized more often in breast-fed than in formula-fed infants. A prospective cohort study of 140 term newborn infants was conducted using the Minolta Air-Shields transcutaneous jaundice meter. For 3 weeks, 115 white infants and 25 black infants were followed at predetermined intervals. The peak jaundice meter readings were higher and the elevated leve

Evaluating Endotracheal Tube Depth in Infants Weighing Less Than 1 Kilogram.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal tube (ETT) depth in premature infants is of critical importance because potentially life-threatening adverse events can occur if the tube is malpositioned. Analysis of current data indicates that the accuracy of current resuscitation guidelines for infants <1 kg is poor. We hypothesized that a weight-based formula that is used clinically in our institution would accurately predict appropriate ETT placement in infants weighing < 1 kg. METHODS: The medical records, from July 2013 to November 2016, of all infants < 1 kg who were intubated were retrospectively reviewed an

Medium-chain triglycerides and total parenteral nutrition in the management of infants with congenital chylothorax.

Enriched MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) formula has been used in the management of infants with congenital chylothorax (CC). Administration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has also been suggested. I evaluated the effect of these two regimens on the course of infants with CC described in the literature, in addition to two new cases reported herein. There were 29 infants who received non-MCT formulas. Twelve infants were given MCT formulas and/or parenteral nutrition. The total volume and duration of pleural effusion were decreased with these regimens, and there were no associated deaths.

The Impact of Infant Feeding Regimen on Cow's Milk Protein Allergy, Atopic Dermatitis and Growth in High-Risk Infants during the First 6 Months of Life: The Allergy Reduction Trial.

The development of early-onset cow's milk protein allergy and atopic dermatitis during the first months of life is multifactorial, including both genetic and nutritional aspects. This study aims to assess the impact of different feeding patterns on the incidence of cow's milk protein allergy, atopic dermatitis, and growth among infants with a family history of allergy. A total of 551 high-risk infants were randomly recruited from 3 European countries in three feeding regimens: exclusive breastfeeding, partially hydrolyzed formula, or standard formula with intact protein either exclusively or s

Nutritional aspects of soy formula.

Soy formula is a commonly used alternative to cows' milk formula. While its primary use has been for infants with milk protein allergy and lactose intolerance, soy formula is used increasingly for infants with gastrointestinal discomfort. The nutritional composition of soy formula has been designed to cover the nutrient needs of the newborn infant; however, some aspects of its composition need further consideration. The protein level of soy formula is usually higher than that of milk-based formulae, partially because of differences in protein digestibility and partly because of differences in

Effects of formula change on intestinal hydrogen production and crying and fussing behavior.

To determine whether incomplete carbohydrate absorption plays a role in mediating the effects of formula change on babies' crying, breath hydrogen excretion and behavior were measured in 17 normal formula-fed infants who entered a feeding trial at 28 days of life. The trial permitted two comparisons between (1) lactose and reduced lactose soy-based formulae, and (2) the infant's usual pretrial formula and the subsequent soy-based variable-carbohydrate formulae. Reduced lactose formula was associated with a small reduction in H2 excretion (from a mean of 15 to 7 ppm, p = .07) but no difference

Gastroduodenal motility in neonates: response to human milk compared with cow's milk formula.

It is known that breast milk empties more quickly from the stomach than does infant formula. We studied the difference in gastroduodenal motility between neonates fed with human milk and those fed with infant formula. Twenty-four five- to 36-day-old neonates were fed with mother's breast milk or with a cow's milk-based formula. Postprandial gastroduodenal contractions were recorded manometrically for three hours. Repetitive, high-amplitude nonmigrating contractions were the dominant wave form during the postprandial period. The number of episodes, duration, amplitude, and frequency of nonmigra…

Factors Determining Optimal Fatty Acid Absorption in Preterm Infants.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to quantify absorption coefficients of specific fatty acids in preterm infants as a function of diet, formula or breast milk (BM), and postnatal age; to identify the fatty acid structural characteristics that determine optimal fatty acid absorption. METHODS: Fatty acids from dietary and fecal samples were extracted and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Fatty acid absorption coefficients (FA-CFAs) were calculated by comparing the total amount of fatty acids supplied by the diet to the amount quantified in the total fecal output dur

Dietary lipid droplet size and phospholipids modulate lipid digestion and absorption in early life nutrition, an in vitro study.

Lipid droplet structure differs in infant nutrition and may impact lipid digestion and absorption. Human milk (HM) contains large milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) coated lipid droplets, while standard infant formula (sIF) and sIF with added MFGM (sIFM) contains small protein coated droplets. Concept infant formula (cIF, Nuturis®) mimics HM's fat globule structure. Digestion of the infant formulae (IFs) and HM was simulated under infant conditions. Digests were sampled in time and free fatty acids (FFA) were analyzed to determine lipolysis rates. Lipid absorption was tested by digest incubation…

Robust and Interpretable General Movement Assessment Using Fidgety Movement Detection.

Fidgety movements occur in infants between the age of 9 to 20 weeks post-term, and their absence are a strong indicator that an infant has cerebral palsy. Prechtl's General Movement Assessment method evaluates whether an infant has fidgety movements, but requires a trained expert to conduct it. Timely evaluation facilitates early interventions, and thus computer-based methods have been developed to aid domain experts. However, current solutions rely on complex models or high-dimensional representations of the data, which hinder their interpretability and generalization ability. To address that
