Attenuation of response to drug-related cues in male heroin abstainers is modulated by cognitive control mechanisms.

Background: Many research studies reveal that both attentional bias and impaired cognitive control significantly influence heroin addiction. However, limited research has been conducted into how the interplay between attentional bias and cognitive control modulates heroin-seeking behavior. Objectives: A modified version of the flanker task was used to investigate whether attentional bias to drug-related stimuli is modulated by cognitive control mechanisms among heroin users. Methods: Sixty participants (30 male heroin users during their abstinence period and 30 normal controls) responded to th

Identification of Predictors of Mood Disorder Misdiagnosis and Subsequent Help-Seeking Behavior in Individuals With Depressive Symptoms: Gradient-Boosted Tree Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Misdiagnosis and delayed help-seeking cause significant burden for individuals with mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment, while delayed help-seeking can result in more severe symptoms, functional impairment, and poor treatment response. Such challenges are common in individuals with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder due to the overlap of symptoms with other mental and physical health conditions, as well as, stigma and insufficient understanding of these disorders. OBJECTIVE: In this stu

"These issues aren't talked about at home": a qualitative study of the sexual and reproductive health information preferences of adolescents in Vanuatu.

BACKGROUND: Onset of sexual activity during adolescence is common in Vanuatu, however access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information is limited. Improving adolescents' knowledge about SRH is necessary to improve health outcomes, however little is known about the information needs and preferences of adolescents in the Pacific to inform policy and programs in this region. METHODS: Sixty-six focus group discussions were conducted with 341 male and female adolescents aged 15-19 years from rural and urban communities on two islands of Vanuatu. Twelve key-informant intervi

Keeping silent about emergency contraceptives in Addis Ababa: a qualitative study among young people, service providers, and key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: The growing popularity of emergency contraceptives (ECs) among urban youth in Sub-Saharan Africa is accompanied by debates on morality and health. This study was situated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and aimed to explore how these debates affect the way in which the product is promoted at a national level, how it is dispensed by service providers, and how young people access, purchase, and get informed about ECs. METHODS: Data were collected using qualitative methods: observations in pharmacies, administering semi-structured questionnaires to young people in pharmacies (N = 36), infor

Investigating the utility of Google trends for Zika and Chikungunya surveillance in Venezuela.

INTRODUCTION: Chikungunya and Zika Virus are vector-borne diseases responsible for a substantial disease burden in the Americas. Between 2013 and 2016, no cases of Chikungunya or Zika Virus were reported by the Venezuelan Ministry of Health. However, peaks of undiagnosed fever cases have been observed during the same period. In the context of scarce data, alternative surveillance methods are needed. Assuming that unusual peaks of acute fever cases correspond to the incidences of both diseases, this study aims to evaluate the use of Google Trends as an indicator of the epidemic behavior of Chik

Perceptions, attitudes, and self-management of natural menopausal symptoms in ghanaian women.

The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to alleviate menopausal symptoms is associated with risks of cardiovascular and thromboembolic diseases and breast cancer. In this qualitative study, we investigated how women in low-resource settings manage menopausal symptoms without HRT. We interviewed 34 menopausal Ghanaian women about their sources of information, perceptions, attitudes, and self-management methods for alleviating menopausal symptoms. The majority of the women used a combination of nonhormonal medications and complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM), including dietary modif

The periaqueductal gray and primal emotional processing critical to influence complex defensive responses, fear learning and reward seeking.

The periaqueductal gray (PAG) has been commonly recognized as a downstream site in neural networks for the expression of a variety of behaviors and is thought to provide stereotyped responses. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that the PAG may exert more complex modulation of a number of behavioral responses and work as a unique hub supplying primal emotional tone to influence prosencephalic sites mediating complex aversive and appetitive responses. Of particular relevance, we review how the PAG is involved in influencing complex forms of defensive responses, such as circa-strike an

Culture, community, and cancer: Understandings of breast cancer from a non-lived experience among women living in Soweto.

BACKGROUND: Individual perceptions compounded with socio-cultural beliefs and health system factors are key determinants of people's health seeking behavior and are widely cited as the causes of delayed breast cancer diagnosis among women from structurally vulnerable settings. Asking: "how do women with a non-lived experience of cancer understand the disease and, what informs their health seeking behaviors?", we explored individual, sociocultural and health system elements from a conceptual model derived from the Socioecological, Health Belief and Cancer Stigma Frameworks, to understand perspe

Online Information Behavior Regarding COVID-19 Vaccination and Its Association With Vaccination Behavior Based on Cluster Analysis of User Groups: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of effective health communication and reliable information for crisis management, particularly following the introduction of vaccinations. Varied attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination and an overwhelming amount of online information complicated communication and pandemic management. Previous studies have often focused on general vaccination behavior and its correlation with vaccination attitudes, establishing a link between information-seeking and vaccination decisions. However, there is insufficient analysis distinguishing specific

Lifestyle Related Cancer Risk and Protective Behaviors Vary among a Convenient Sample of Physically Active, Young-to-Middle-Aged Adults 18-49.

It is an assumption that physically active adults lead an overall healthy lifestyle. To examine this assumption, we administered a cross-sectional, web-based survey to a sample of young-to-middle-aged US adults between 18 and 49 who self-reported participation in at least one recreational sporting event in the past month. Logistic regressions were conducted to examine demographic characteristics associated with cancer risk and protective behaviors. Gender was represented equally (N = 938), and the average age was 32 years (SD: 8.4). Most participants reported >three days of moderate- to high-i

Association Between Feeding Problems and Gastrointestinal Symptoms, Language, and Developmental History in Adults With Angelman Syndrome.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe developmental delays, typical facial features, ataxia, seizures, speech impairments, sleeping difficulties, and a happy demeanor. Caregivers of individuals with AS often report feeding problems, with difficulties including issues with obesity, failure to gain weight at the expected rate, food-seeking behaviors, and the requirement of tube-feeding. This study examined the frequency of feeding problems in 57 adults with AS, the most common types of issues, the associations and differences between those who experience

Academic achievement and psychological adjustment in short children. The National Cooperative Growth Study.

Limited information is available on the educational and behavioral functioning of short children. Through 27 participating medical centers, we administered a battery of psychologic tests to 166 children referred for growth hormone (GH) treatment (5 to 16 years) who were below the third percentile for height (mean height = -2.7 SD). The sample consisted of 86 children with isolated growth-hormone deficiency (GHD) and 80 children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Despite average intelligence, absence of significant family dysfunction, and advantaged social background, a large number of childr

Current Validated Medical Treatments for Tinnitus: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Tinnitus distress results from a weave of physical and psychological processes. Reducing the power of the psychological processes will therefore reduce the degree of suffering. The main psychological therapy in this context is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This seeks to understand and change the influence of thinking processes, including information processing biases, and the behaviors that these motivate, on the experience of tinnitus. The results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses indicate that CBT is the tinnitus management approach for which there is the most robust evidence. In

Computational noise in reward-guided learning drives behavioral variability in volatile environments.

When learning the value of actions in volatile environments, humans often make seemingly irrational decisions that fail to maximize expected value. We reasoned that these 'non-greedy' decisions, instead of reflecting information seeking during choice, may be caused by computational noise in the learning of action values. Here using reinforcement learning models of behavior and multimodal neurophysiological data, we show that the majority of non-greedy decisions stem from this learning noise. The trial-to-trial variability of sequential learning steps and their impact on behavior could be predi
